September is YOUTH SOCCER MONTH!

COVER STORY

The four messages of Youth Soccer month are:
·Week of September 1- Fun:  Whether recreational or competitive in nature, involvement in soccer is easy, affordable and rewarding.
·Week of September 8 - Family:  Playing soccer ties families together as schedules, vacations and family time are coordinated.
·Week of September 15 - Friendship:   The relationships and fun generated through playing soccer and their extension beyond the field.
·Week of September 22 - Fitness:  The health and fitness (physical, psychological and social) benefits of playing soccer
Borrowed from US Youth Soccer

Ask yourselves the following each week
Week 1 Are my kids having FUN?
Week 2 Are we doing these things as a family or are some being left behind? Big sis doesn't want to go because she isn't into soccer? Dad or mom always missing games because of work?
Week 3 We know WPS has fostered many of these friendships, but how about your DK's and the rest of the team? The other parents? Do you just say hi in passing or do you invite each other over for dinner ( or drinks) :) or a sleepover for the kids?
Week 4 The kids run and jump to stay fit.. what are the parents doing?
Are you helping at practices or staying in the car or running errands?

"Help!  Is there a Doctor in the house?"

Quote
Well it happened again! DD was carried off the field and we ended up in the Emergency Room after DD heard a pop in her knee when she went down in a game.
Are there exercises that she can do to strengthen her knees? What about ankles?

Well first of all an injury that causes someone to be carted off the field needs a definitive diagnosis to be rendered before treatment is initiated. In young ladies, a "pop" can occur for several reasons. Some are benign like a "sprain" and some are serious!!  Use RICE and crutches immediately!!!

 Several questions enter my mind:
1) Was she able to put weight on the leg within 20-30 minutes?
2) Did the knee swell in comparison to the other knee?
3) Does she complain of an inability to straighten the knee?
4) Does it feel like it wants to "give way" or buckle?

Often ER docs are unable to render an accurate diagnosis. Xrays should ALWAYS be obtained in the swollen knee. An Orthopedist should check her. A MRI may be necessary.

Possible diagnoses include:
1) Torn ACL...very common. Is she knock kneed, going thru a rapid growth phase, does she jump and land "softly" in general,is she "loose jointed", has she had a recent injury, is she fit...all of these may contribute to an increased chance of tear...NOT ALL HAVE SEVERE PAIN!!
2)Torn meniscus..common as well...serious tears like a "bucket handle" tear may "lock" the knee rendering an inability to fully straighten it...swelling can do the same remember...THESE DO HURT!!
3) Dislocated patella (kneecap)...actually quite common and especially if there is a prior history, knockknees, "chondromalacia"...PAINFUL YES!!
4) Growth plate injury...a Salter fracture...this is an injury to the growth area of the femur most commonly...swelling, stiffness, inability to bear weight are all common and may look just like a patella dislocation or ACL tear...VERY PAINFUL

When in doubt, check it out...ASAP!!!

"How about what is the difference between an "A" team coach and a "B" team coach"

I don't think theres an exact right or wrong answer to this question. However I will outline some traits that are helpful for either a B team or A team coach:

B team coach:
Has very little ego: this really helps when it comes to pushing his best players towards the A team.
Technically a great teacher: Most B team players need help technically more than anything else.
Positive attitude: You will sometimes struggle with consistancy and level of play so you need to be able to maintain a positive attitude.
Communication: with both parents and other coaches.

A team coach:
Ability to Recruit: Its very important at the A team level to be able to recruit for your team.
communication: with both parents and B team.
Technically and tactically strong teacher: On the A team level you often have good enough skills that tactically you have to be a solid coach also.
Balanced attitude: you will have lots of ups and downs working with youth sports so you have to be able to manage it.

Honestly alot of these can go both ways, but the biggest difference to me is an A team coach must recruit. Typically your A type personality's are great A team coaches and B type personality's are great B team coaches.

"Questions for the Ref"

Quote from: A CP asks
Are you a mentor for younger referees? What exactly do you do?

In my view, providing the new referee with mentoring during their initial matches is the best way to help make them successful and improve the likelihood of retaining them past their first season (or game).  However, if a young referee is not matched with an appropriate referee, the result can sometimes be worse than if the referee had no mentor.

For purposes of referee training, a mentor is someone who will guide and support a referee.  What they actually do depends on what the referee needs and where that referee is in their development.

It so happens that I do have responsibility for facilitating mentoring in my local association.  I've discovered that one of my toughest challenges in establishing successful mentoring is recruiting and training mentors who "get it."

Although any experienced referee has the ability to pass on some knowledge and guidance to another referee, the most successful and effective mentoring occurs when mentor and mentee establish a rapport based on trust and strong communication.  This can be a challenge for older referees trying to mentor and relate to young referees.

For the beginning referee, the principle objective of a mentor is to help the new referee apply on the pitch what they learned in the Entry Level Clinic.  Guiding them in whatever areas will help them improve most from one game to the next.

The topic of mentoring in our officiating is a complex and extensive subject.  Unfortunately, not enough is available and not as well organized as we’d like.  However, for referees that seek out mentoring, it can almost always be found.

OTHER NEWS AND GOSSIP AND TIDBITS:
King County Press Release:
http://www.lwysa.org/frameset.php
And borrowed from the LWYSA webpage:
King County and LWYSA have proposed to allow the development of additional athletic fields on 60 Acres South. Additional sports fields (seven or more) would help alleviate the high demand for athletic facilities and support the expansion of youth sports. In addition, the agreement would ease stress on current athletic fields as well as provide greater opportunities for passive recreation uses. In a related action, LWYSA proposes to sell the Muller Farm (72 Acres) to King County and Full Circle Farms and return the property to active farming. Please support this proposed Use Agreement by signing this petition.

Hi,

I wanted to draw your attention to this important petition that I recently
signed:

I really think this is an important cause, and I'd like to encourage you to add
your signature, too. It's free and takes less than a minute of your time.

Thanks!

Once again, thanks for signing the petition!

I forgot one last week and since its the only one I have of a CP.....

Boo's Daddy watching the games at the SF tourney

View from the Mini Van
Heard from a friend this week, and thought it would be great information to pass along..

When your DK is injured...  encourage them to show up to practice anyway.  Have them watch practice, listen to the coaches instruction.  Game day.. have them sit on the bench with the girls, by the coach...   they will gain a wealth of information just listening and observing!!!

It was shared with me that their DK was amazed and what they missed during a game or practice, that they learned just being there..  when their DK is ready to get back out there and play they are excited to apply what they learned!!!!

You said we wouldn't like the "in your face reality about your rankings."
What are your rankings ?

This guy finds it hard to do rankings for losers, but will give the tarts and rubes something to chew on. For your 93 age group Crossfire is still the head turd in your sorry state. The fat mothers need to find somewhere else to take their lame cubs instead of footy practice and let Crossfire just travel the country playing teams that can give them competition. That is the reality of ranking that sorry age group down there. If you are not sporting Crossfire colours then you suck. Hows that? Do you all want to cry now? Go make me a poptart losers >:(

Why is it that parents B$&%# and moan about guest players on another team but use their own when the need arises? We all need to have a guest player sometimes. Quit B$&%#ing that we use them because sooner or later, you're going to need one also. I won't be saying anything then, so why are you doing it now?
