It would be absolutely fitting if the Republicans did exactly what the Democrats did in the Senate ever since Bush was elected....
Obstructionism, sabotage, and encouraging defeatism.
But I do not encourage Republicans to take that tack for the next two years. Let's give President Obama a chance. The one thing that he has demonstrated is that he is a very good politician.
I have little doubt that 2010 will become a repeat of 1994.
Obama simply cannot keep most of his campaign promises, the US Government is running out of credit. It is looking at a trillion dollars or more in borrowing just in the current 12 month cycle. Unfortunately, what Obama can do on the cheap is to terribly damage the standing of America abroad by doing things like pulling out of Iraq and waving the White Flag. Giving up on the pressures that the US has been exerting against Iran (terrorism and nuclear ambitions), North Korea (nuclear weapons and terrorism), Russia (rebuilding the Russian/Soviet Empire), various South American states (Terrorism, narcotics, and the local strongman's aim to become a "President fo Life" type dictator), backing down to China, reversing course on free trade, legitimizing terrorists like Hamas and Hezbollah, and so on.........
Europe - particularly "Old Europe" - is perfectly willing to give the free, democratic nations of the Ukraine and Georgia to Russia. Shades of 1939...... Without a strong American President who values freedom and independence more than kissing up to dictators and fascists, Old Europe will get its way. For a while, of course, only for a while. Just like at Munich.
For anyone who doubts the negative effects of these actions, look at the consequences of the US abandonment of VietNam and Somalia. Obama Bin Laden among others pointed out that the Clinton withdrawal from Somalia following "Black Hawk Down" showed the world that the USA was a paper tiger and could be run out of the middle east. And remember how long it took for Iran to release the Embassey Hostages once Reagan became president after their thumbing their noses at the weak Carter.
On the other hand, many Americans, including many conservatives, would be happy to see America retreat from the world. A new form of isolationism. Which will last until there is a nuclear or biological 9/11. And then there will be another white washing investigation, to absolve the liberals and the beaurocrats who were responsible.
China makes a habit of challenging American Presidents soon after they take office. Watch the Spratley Islands, that is a fairly obvious move by their part. Taiwan would be a bit too much.
Obama has proven to be a consumate politician. That is a good characteristic in a President, and one that both Reagan and Clinton had. Obama has shown no other quality, so we must all hope that he will recognize the need to play to his strength and try to keep everyone as happy as possible instead of following through with some of his insanely fiscally irresponsible campaign promises.
Now that King County has announced that they will submit their ballot tallies after everyone else, it is clear that Gregoire will win.
That will mean that the recession that has hit the rest of the country will come to Washington, and the anti-growth policies of Olympia, the anti-job policies will continue.
My business has been hit with several rounds of additional regulatory and tax expenses and requirements over the last two years. So far I have held the line and absorbed the costs in my business (low income housing rental) Tomorrow, I am going to announce an increase in rents by 10%. That will not cover the increase in costs over the last two years. I will also point out to the tenants that if the expenses continue to increase, I will be forced to increase rents by at least another 10% in 2009.
Many of my tenants are fixed income senior citizens. Others are single mothers with kids. Many low income families. With the current economy in our region, and the current finnancial situation nationwide, these people do not have lower cost options. My business has very full occupancy rates, and we will continue to do so even after the rents are increased. I have been turning away people because I do not have vacancies.
If Gregoire and the rest of the Olympia politicians and beaurocrats continue to beat down on small businesses, we will see the least advantaged people in this state being the most negatively affected.
