BABY IT'S COLD OUTSIDE.....

The Pulse!  No. #68

***********************

COVER STORY

The weather outside is frightful and your DK's are shivering and pacing trying to keep warm before the game. What is a parent to do? Especially when you have to show your team jersey on top of everything!

We always talk layers of clothing when its cold out.
Layer clothing for maximum warmth and convenience.
Layers allow you to add and remove items as your body temperature rises and falls. Begin with a base layer of polypropylene underwear, top and bottom. You can purchase these inexpensively at many outdoor stores. Brand-name items don't always deliver better quality, despite their higher costs.

Wear a hat that completely covers your head, or even one that has ear flaps, to prevent a potentially life-endangering loss of body heat. Look for itch-free fleece headbands on warm wool hats.  I saw a Coach this weekend that had a hat with ear flaps. He looked kinda cute.... but WARM!
I was going to add his picture here, but I forgot to ask him about it

Waterproof, gauntlet-type gloves that extend over your jacket's sleeves provide the most protection from snow and water. Some people's fingers stay warmer in mittens. You just need to try which is the best for you.

Vaseline on the exposed parts of your body is good for keeping the frigid wind off of you.

Keepers... if you have 2 pairs of gloves, use one set  while you are playing in the game, use hand warmers in the other set and then switch them at halftime. Nice and toasty!

Some coaches will use 2 pair of socks with a plastic baggy between them to keep the moisture away. Sounds really weird, but one time I tried it. It WORKED!
I DO NOT RECCOMMEND this for kids that have a hard time keeping their shoes ON!!   :o

Re-warm your body as needed during outdoor activities. Use external heaters or take regular breaks in a warm indoor environment.

Winter Training Tips
Use base-layer clothing made from fabrics that are designed to wick moisture away from your skin. This will keep you dry and warm for the duration of the workout. Under Armour anyone?

Do not overdress. Though this may feel nice and comfortable at the beginning, you will sweat much more than you would otherwise, making your clothes wet. Wet Clothes = Cold Body. Generally speaking, if you feel slightly cool before starting your activity, you have dressed perfectly for the conditions.

Wear shades. In most cool or cold weather conditions, sport sunglasses will protect eyes from the bright sun reflecting off of the snow and prevent them from watering due to the cold or wind.  8)

Keep it down. The down coat is king when it comes to cold environments and intermittent activities that involve stopping. A light-weight down coat is the perfect solution to keep you toasty during winter sports that incorporate periods of prolonged rest. This can only be used while sitting at the game or afterwards

Staying on your feet and keeping them warm go a long way toward enjoying outdoor winter activities. Over-layering your feet will cause them to sweat, which can lead to cold toes. For cardiovascular-based sports, a single pair of warm, wicking socks will normally do. In very cold conditions or for gravity-based sports, use a double layer of socks.

H2O. One of the biggest challenges for training in cold temperatures is avoiding de-hydration. While it may feel unappealing, drinking regularly during these lower temperature workouts is just as necessary as in warmer weather. Filling water bottles with lukewarm fluids will help to prevent them from freezing or being too cold to drink comfortably.

Avoiding frost bite and hypothermia is the most important consideration when preparing for cold weather activities. Make sure all of your skin is covered and carry an extra layer in case the conditions change during your workout.

With a little planning and knowledge, along with the right clothing, you will be amazed at how enjoyable the crisp air can feel. Almost as good as the well-deserved hot chocolate in front of a warm fire afterwards.

DRAGON'S EYE ON THE G94'S!!!

Hope you are all enjoying the winter weather, Dragon sure is! ;D ;D ;D

To start off Dragon would like to give a big shout out to the U14 CandyCane Challenge winners:

Tues:  MISSLE TOES!

Sun:  JUST KICKIN' IT!

Congrats to both teams!  Heard it was a fun filled (and cold) evening for all teams involved!  (where's your heater Teddy? LOL) ;D ;D ;D

Next, onto the team Spotlights!  Dragon has a blast doing these, but sad to say don't have any scheduled for next week.  If you would like your team "Eval'd by Dragon", then Drop Dragon a line in a Private Message here, or at my email at the bottom of all my posts! ;)

Without further ado, the team spotlight...

Enjoy ;D

DRAGON'S TEAM SPOTLIGHTS!!!

...And now, here is Dragon's 4th "Team Spotlight"!  D is very happy to to cover this SELECT DISTRICT TEAM and Very pleased to bring you this each week if I have time.  Remember, Dragon is NOT just looking at PDL A teams, P1 teams, Etc....Dragon is looking at ALL TEAMS!!!  With that said and without further ado, Here is D's 4th team Spotlight:

INFINITY 94!!! ;D ;D ;D

The Infinity gals are an Independent team out of Seattle's Capitol Hill Soccer Club.  There coach is Zeke "the Belgium Bomber" Halilovic.  He is an ex pro from D1 teams in Croatia, Belgium, and Switzerland!  (you can check out this link:  http://www.ias-soccer.com/about/zeke-halilovic )  The Belgium Bomber likes his gals to play the 4-3-3 formation most of the time.  Dragon was fortunate enough to catch their last league game (which they won 7-1), and will be doing this "Team and Player Eval" based on only seeing them a couple of times.  The coach did not encourage boot ball, but did call for it when there was a good breakaway opportunity.  They have really Fast wings and they helped to produce quite a few of those.  He has obviously coached the players to recognize the opportunities that are there during games, ie; through ball, boot to sideline, give and go triangle, dribble until challenged.  Very good coach from what D has seen and the gals seem to enjoy playing for him, which is one of the most important things ;D

The team itself is Undefeated in Dist 1 after the league season and finished with a 12-0 record!  They had an amazing 63 GF and only 6 GA during the season!!  Dragon will tell you they have some serious scoring punch, thats for sure...but then again, you have to look at their competition they have faced this fall...Dragon questions:  Are they being challenged enuff for their talent??  Looking back on their summer tournament play this team entered a couple of well known tournaments:  Crossfire Select & the Bigfoot.  In the XF tournament they did pretty well but believe they just missed the finals by a point...BUT, in the Bigfoot they faced Evergreen E., MRFC Blue, and Bainbridge Blue.....they Lost all 3!  Dragon is not saying they cannot compete at this level, it is just they need to do so on a more frequent basis to get "up to game speed" against these better teams.  Dragon would suggest cont to enter in the "bigger tournaments" and play as many friendly games against "better competition" as possible...before you know, the Infinity will be running with the "big boys"! ;D

Now lets take a moment and look at each player.  Dragon has to apologize that he missed getting all of the gals numbers correct and don't know any CP's from this team, so it was hard "winging" it with the names and numbers. So D is sorry if any names are mis-spelled or numbers are wrong :-[

#3 ZOE - FORWARD
From the talk on the sideline this little star is a play up, but you cannot tell.  She was the "first off the bench" during the game D watched her and did a great job scoring on a header from a full volly cross!  Dragon would suggest working on her power for finishing on both feet, and play as tough as D knows you can when faced against Bigger players ;D

#4 CLARA - DEFENSE
Dragon did not get to see enough of this young star in the games he went too, to give a fair assessment.  Sorry, D will plan on watching you play next time ;D

#5 RAINA - POSITION??
This young star seemed to play many positions, and seemed comfortable in every position.  She has really good footwork and is a very strong player.  She can score from outside the box and is never afraid to takes shots from "way out".  Dragon would suggest to look for open wings/forwards just before you shoot. Sometimes those long bombs are great, but in a lot of cases a "soft pass" can end in the same result! ;D

#7 MIRANDA - FORWARD
This young star is strong and very very quick.  Above average footwork and have seen her score with either foot.  Dragon would suggest that you take on players more then you do right now.  You are a great passer, but would like to see you take on 1v1 opportunities more. This will take you to the next level!  ;D

#9 JULIA - MIDFIELDER
This star is a great passer and has some of the best "field vision" on her team.  Very smart player as well and you can see her team can rely on her.  Dragon loves speed though, and wants you to be faster, faster, faster!  Work on some sprints in the off days, and add that weapon to your arsenal and you will be dangerous in the mid! ;D

#10 DJENAWAY - DEF/FOR/WING
Dragon has got to start out by saying, what a cool name!  This young star is fast fast fast!  During the the time D watched the team she had some of the best crosses he has seen this year!  Dragon wants you to turn it up a notch now, and start hustling as much on defense as you do when you are up front, especially when away from the ball.  Do this and the skys the limit! ;D

#12 SELENE - DEFENSE
If Dragon is not mistaken he heard this is this young stars first year playing select!  Well you sure cannot tell. She is very steady and has good hustle.  Believe she is also a play up as well and she definately improved from the 1st time D saw her til now.  Keep up the hard work and the skys the limit young one! ;D

#16 HELENA - FORWARD/WING
Here is another speedster on their team.  Very fast and has some really good flashes of footwork at times.  Loved her hustle and was just at good getting back as going forward.  Would suggest working on ladder drills to sharpen those "flashes" of footwork into a full time shine! ;D

#17 NATALIE - MIDFIELDER
Very very soccer savy player.  A smart player is alway a good thing.  Sharp passes and was very reliable each time D saw her.   Dragon would say work on your speed, it is good now but if you can turn it up a notch then watch out world! ;D

#18 JO - KEEPER
If Dragon only had two words to describe this young star it would be "Fast and Fearless"!  Does a great job in the box when she is challenged, and it shaping up to be a very very good goalie.  Dragon would say take more training with goalie specific trainers...Occasionally you rush your punts and that results in turnovers if your not careful. Remember, sometimes it is better to roll out the ball to a fast wing then punt it up resulting in a 50/50! ;D

#24 ISABEL - FORWARD/WING
Here she comes, here comes speed racer!....WOW, talk about fast; This young star is one of the fastest players out there.  Love the fact she is willing to mix it up when she needs too.  Very solid on the dribble and takes on other players well.  A couple of times though you held the ball too long...  Suggest keeping your head and eyes up as much as possible and look for a quick pass when needed.  D would also suggest working on your Power shots for finishing on your off days! ;D

#26 REBECCA - SWEEPER
WOW!  My what a big Boot you have!  This young star can really clear it out of the backfield.  Would have her work on maintaining possession now and bringing the ball upfield when possible.  So work on your footwork and field vision!  You definatly already have the power part down! ;D

and here are a few other players that D was not sure of their #'s :-[

#??  JANI - DEFENSE
This young lady is also one of their playups.  She was very quick and strong too.  Dragon likes mostly how she did not get flustered in times of "panic".   Dragon would suggest keep doing what your doing, work on being a well rounded player.  Work on speed, footwork, power! ;D

#?? KATE - DEFENSE
Dragon did not get to see this young star play this fall.  Asked a parent and she said she was injured most of the season, only saw her in the summer if D recalls correctly.  Do not recall enuff though to give a fair assessment.  Hope you heal up to 100% young one and get in more practice and play in the future! ;D

#?? EMILY - DEFENSE/FOR/WING
Dragon did not see this young star in the summer and CP said she only joined in the fall.  Well she must of got injured (not for sure) shortly after joining the team because D never saw her play.  Never fear, D will keep an eye out for you next time.  Keep practing with the team and as always a ball.  Hope you are back to 100% soon if you got hurt! ;D

Thats it for now!  Go Infinity!  Hope your team kicks butt next year and in the State cup!! ;D ;D ;D

"Help!  Is there a Doctor in the house?"

i'll save your other questions for another issue of the Pulse, so I decided to ask what we can do during the cold weather to make sure we are warm and not going to get hurt while playing soccer?

Move to SoCAl is my first response! ;)
But seriously, I found a great 2 part article from the Web.
Here goes with credit to: Justeson @  Parkway PT in Cali.
You can find the articles in http://www.parkwayphysiotherapy.ca/public/articles.html

COLD WEATHER / SOCCER

Generally speaking, soccer players are not in the cold weather long enough to sustain serious cold weather injuries, however there are many climates in which the game is played during very cold and wet conditions and tournaments can leave players exposed for longer periods.
Susceptibility to cold injury depends on our ability to retain heat plus our ability to
generate heat, minus the particular cold challenge of the day. As the cold weather
overcomes our ability to retain and make heat, we lose core temperature. When we lose core temperature to the point where normal muscle and brain function becomes impaired, hypothermia has set in. Frostbite is an injury specifically to the skin caused by cold exposure. Frostnip is the mildest form of this injury and usually affects the cheeks, earlobes, fingers and toes.
Cold Challenges > Heat Retention + Heat Generation = Hypothermia and Frostbite
Heat Retention + Heat Generation > Cold Challenges = No Problem

Cold Challenges
Temperature: Players are most vulnerable as temperatures drop
towards or below freezing.
Wind: Wind evaporates moisture and draws heat from
exposed skin. Soccer officials and coaches should carefully consider whether to allow practices or games when the temperature is below freezing and wind
conditions are high.
Rain :Wet skin freezes faster than dry skin and water
conducts heat from the body 25 times faster than air.
Hypothermia Stage Signs
Mild :Shivering, goose bumps, numb hands
Moderate :Intense shivering, uncoordinated movements, mild
confusion, difficulty speaking, withdrawn
Severe :Shivering stops, exposed skin becomes bluish, unable
to walk, muscles rigid, decreased breathing and heart
rate. Unconsciousness eventually follows
What To Do
Hypothermia :Warm the player as soon as possible and take care to avoid further heat loss. Change wet clothing for dry and add extra layers as soon as possible. Shelter the player from wind and rain and use blankets (warm if available).
Warm fluids will provide hydration and are a source of both calories and heat. Food intake will provide a slower release of energy. Alcohol, caffeine and tabacco should be avoided as they may further dehydrate the player and
decrease blood flow.
Frostnip: Do not rub the area. Gently rewarm by blowing on the
tissues, or immersing them in warm water (38 to 41°C).
Warming should only take place if you are sure that the
tissues will not freeze again. Refreezing of newly thawed tissue can cause serious damage.
If the player has both hypothermia and frostnip, the priority is to warm the core.
As with most injuries, it is better to prevent than cure.
Practical tips to retain and generate heat to prevent cold injury
and improve the comfort and performance of soccer players in cold weather.

a. Cover Up: Exposed skin loses heat to the environment. Wind will remove heat even faster but worse still is to allow the skin to remain wet. Wear layers that wick away from the skin. Cotton absorbs moisture and keeps it close to the skin therefore is a bad material to wear on cold, wet or windy days. Polyester and polypropylene fabrics are lightweight and will wick moisture away from the body so any sweat produced does not lead to increased heat loss.
b. Gloves: Gloves help retain heat and usually offer padding on the finger tips for additional grip. If you take throw-ins on cold days you know the extra challenge of controlling a throw with frozen fingers.
c. Headgear: Wear a hat or touque for as long as possible on cold days. Some leagues will allow soft headgear to be worn on the field.
d. Goalkeepers: Keepers generate less heat than other players and therefore need to layer up even more than the other players.
e. Hydrate: Our bodies lose moisture even when playing in the cold. Rather than water loss through sweat, we lose it through breathing, Water is required to maintain all body functions, including heat retention so hydration in the cold is still important.
f. Carbohydrates: When skin is exposed to the cold we use less fat and more glycogen for energy. The increased rate of glycogen leads to earlier fatigue and a less potential heat generation. A good carbohydrate rich meal a few hours before a match is especially important in cold weather. Players can also supplement extra carbohydrates by ingesting a sports drink (typically 6-8% carbohydrate, not more) before and during and after the warm-up and competition.
g. Vaseline: On cold and/or wet days, apply a layer of vaseline on the toes, legs, body, ears, neck and cheeks. This layer makes a barrier to moisture and wind which allows players to retain more heat. This small tip will result in far greater comfort on the cold soccer pitch.
h. Stay Fit: Unfit players will have less energy to expend on both soccer demands and heat production.
i. Acclimate: Traveling teams should ideally allow 8 to 10 days of acclimation to get used to new cold climates.
Remember, human beings are better at dissipating heat than we are at retaining heat.
Children are even more susceptible to cold weather than older players. These
suggestions will help players to retain heat and have the energy to generate heat. The combination of these two factors are the best protection against the cold challenges of soccer under inclement conditions.

ASK THE PRESIDENT

Quote from: Brat Jr
Does Washington Youth Soccer have a group of people that oversee the ethics of coaches and players?
If so, are they just 'regular people' or have they been chosen for this because they have a background in dealing with these type of issues?

Hello Tracie,
Washington Youth Soccer has a judicial panel and an appeal panel that oversees the ethics of coaches and players. The panel is made up of members from across the state, we have a few attorneys, business people, referees, soccer administrators as well as others that come from all walks of life. All of the members on these panels are there because of experience in dealing with the issues that come before them. All of them are also well versed in our bylaws, policies, and regulations, as well as USSF/United States Youth Assn. regulations,so that they can make a valued decision in the cases and incidents that they hear on behalf of our organization.

As with any volunteer organization, we are always on the lookout for qualified individuals who would like to serve in these capacities. Please let me know if you know of someone who has these skills or similar skills that it takes to resolve conflict resolution.

Thank you,
Doug Andreassen

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMMMM

Quote from: anonymous
YOU! Yes you!
The one that decided that your kids coach wasn't good enough for her so you had to sling his name through the muck and mire of Wa state soccer.

Well guess what? Not only did you rake his name through the mud, but you probably just ended any career choice he has working with kids. An RMA card is needed for coaching soccer and most things dealing with kids.
Just because you got your pantys in a wad over what? Playing time? A little yelling?
GIVE ME A F&^$#(+  BREAK!
You just handed this coach a life sentence. Proud of yourself?

And golly gee Mcgee, you aren't even on the team any longer!
Think your new coach and team don't know whats going on?
You are as marked as the coach now.  Probably even more so.
I will bet you a buncha bucks that no coach will be looking at your child in the same way. They will be watching their backs, watching what they say and do all the while you sit there and wonder if I did the right thing.
The short answer? YOU BLEW IT

You have possibly ruined a persons life because of this incident! No matter what the state decides to do in this, his name is now associated with this incident, as is yours and your childs.
I really hope you are happy with the decision you have made and that you think long and hard before taking another coach down this road. (Not that any coach is going to give you the satifactoin of doing it again)
We are all watching you now. To make sure that you are being held accountable for your actions!! Don't like being on the hotseat? Too bad. You put yourself there. And quite frankly, I hope it gets hot, REAL HOT!

asst. editor note ** We now know that the State cleared the Coach

and then there is this

Quote
To the girls team that won the Prez cup that decided to call the X-team mate and BRAG about winning.....
I heard she doesn't give a rip!
