COVER STORY

SPORT PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT
On September 23, 2000, more than thirty heads of Massachusetts' chapters of national sports and medical associations, educational organizations, and professional associations met at Children's Hospital in Boston to participate in a consensus meeting to develop a sport parent code of conduct for the state. The meeting was convened by the Massachusetts Governor's Committee on Physical Fitness and Sports and the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, Inc.

Preamble
The essential elements of character-building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these "six pillars of character."

I therefore agree:
1. I will not force my child to participate in sports.
2. I will remember that children participate to have fun and that the game is for youth, not adults.
3. I will inform the coach of any physical disability or ailment that may affect the safety of my child or the safety of others.
4. I will learn the rules of the game and the policies of the league.
5. I (and my guests) will be a positive role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, officials and spectators at every game, practice or other sporting event.
6. I (and my guests) will not engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player, or parent such as booing and taunting; refusing to shake hands; or using profane language or gestures.
7. I will not encourage any behaviors or practices that would endanger the health and wellbeing of the athletes.
8. I will teach my child to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence.
9. I will demand that my child treat other players, coaches, officials and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, sex or ability.
10. I will teach my child that doing one's best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or his/her performance.
11. I will praise my child for competing fairly and trying hard, and make my child feel like a winner every time.
12. I will never ridicule or yell at my child or other participant for making a mistake or losing a competition.
13. I will emphasize skill development and practices and how they benefit my child over winning. I will also deemphasize games and competition in the lower age groups.
14. I will promote the emotional and physical well-being of the athletes ahead of any personal desire I may have for my child to win.
15. I will respect the officials and their authority during games and will never question, discuss, or confront coaches at the game field, and will take time to speak with coaches at an agreed upon time and place.
16. I will demand a sports environment for my child that is free from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol and I will refrain from their use at all sports events.
17. I will refrain from coaching my child or other players during games and practices, unless I am one of the official coaches of the team.

I also agree that if I fail to abide by the aforementioned rules and guidelines, I will be subject to disciplinary action that could include, but is not limited to the following:

Verbal warning by official, head coach, and/or head of league organization
Written warning
Parental game suspension with written documentation of incident kept on file by organizations involved
Game forfeit through the official or coach
Parental season suspension

RUMOR TIME BABY!!! ;D :P

:o  GO is moving to XF now that NM is gone!

:o  2 Batman girls leaving for EFC Red!

:o  Coach Bennett leaving HPFC next year!

:o  Big Time player from Evergreen 94 just left!

:o  NWN Blue aka Giant Killers will actually win a game during spring league!

:o  GRFC Winter Classic GU12.............FC Crush was left out because they aren't in the PDL?  How else do you explain Crush not making the "accepted" list while teams like DOS White gets accepted into a tourney labled for "strong" "competitive" "like" teams?

:o  Norpoint Americans coach will Not return next year!

:o  Coach Batman will not return next year!

:o  Player Signing Date - For the 2009-2010 season tryouts, WSYS will be adding a Player Signing Date.
Along with WSYS setting the first date that tryouts may occur for any team in the state.  They will also set a Player Signing Date which will be 21 days after the first tryout date.
No player may be registered to any club or team prior to this date.  This will allow players to attend as many tryouts as they wish before committing to a club or team.  Teams and clubs may have supplemental tryouts anytime after the Signing date to fill additional roster space.

:o  MA's sister is in Labor today!!!

:o  Evergreen U13 (Valles) may fold in January!  This team just moved from Tynecastle didn't it?

:o  FC Crush cont's ta have some bad luck on the 94's with a player not only quitting, but leaving soccer altogether. (hope there is nothing wrong). :'(

:o  After a ton of players leaving Big Red over the last couple of years for greener pastures, they are now realizing the grass was greener where they were!

:o  Mukilteo 93 just lost player to NWN Blue 93!

:o :o (Eastern Wa Rumors!)

:o   Three "premier" clubs in Spokane.  Spokane Shadow, SSC Elite, and River City.  Shadow has been declared by the fiat of youth soccer politicians to be the "premier" Spokane club.  Shadow is given preferential times/dates/locations for tryouts by youth soccer bureaucrats.  To date, SSC Elite and River City have been left to fight over the scraps.
Tired of being left with the scraps, and after seeing multiple mergers in western Washington, SSC Elite and River City are looking to merge in order to do battle with Shadow and to make a run at qualifying for the PDL.  River City scored a number of PDL points last year (think they made the top 25 in PDL points).  A merger with SSC Elite will give the new entity a better chance to qualify for PDL (and will provide big time competition for Spokane Shadow).

:o 3 Rivers has been the only soccer club serving Kennewick, Richland, Pasco, and Hanford for many, many years.  Disgruntled coaches/parents attempting to form a new club.

Thats it for this week, til next time...
~Dragon out ;D ;D ;D

"Help!  Is there a Doctor in the house?"

Labral tears of the hip

Ouch!! Freddy Ljunberg out for 10 weeks after undergoing Hip labral surgery! why couldn't it have been Becks!  :P

So what did he have ??Well the hip socket is a very deep ball and socket joint. Surrounding the hip socket (acetabulum for those of you reading at home) is a tough cartilage structure called the labrum. It is similar in "feel" to the whitish-gray "cartilage" that is found on that chicken breast you like so much!  It is similar to the labrum in the shoulder and the meniscus in the knee! It adds a layer of protection for the hip by helping prevent dislocations. Unfortunately in many people who need to be very "limber"(gymnasts) or who run, jump, stop/start repeatedly this tissue sees tremendous force. Sudden "hip" injuries ,stretches or just "too much" sport can cause the labrum to tear. When it does it can cause pain, locking, catching, etc. Very similar to a torn meniscus in the knee. So the treatment, fortunately if caught early enough (that is before arthritis has come about), is an arthroscopic clean out which can rid most of the symptoms. Ljunberg had some arthritic change noted however as he did have some "bone removed" !Which means that the labral tear may not be the WHOLE issue here!
So what does all this mean...is he damaged goods?? The short answer is "YES".
The long answer is that with rehab and luck he may return to the pitch without a hitch. Don't quote me, as I will deny it, but IMO, this could be career threatening! But ONLY his surgeon knows the extent of the "damage" and he may not want anyone but Freddy and his agent to know ;) I am NOT giving up my tix but I am NOT holding my breath that he will be 100% by season start!!

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMMMM
Why is it when a player leaves one team for another, the old players treat the one that left like crap?
They foul them every chance they get if they have games against them, call them dirty names and generally
make life hell for them!
They decided to leave the "TEAM" not the "PLAYERS"!
One day we'll look back at this drama and chuckle a little, but mostly I hope we look back on this and
not repeat this with the next generation!

The Gift of a New Year

Here’s to the year
that’s almost past its expiration date—2008.
We all had some surprises, didn’t we?
Some good, some distressing.
Let’s use everything we got from our experiences,
everything we learned,
to enrich the new year.

Here’s to the new year, 2009,
a gift we haven’t opened yet.
May its bright, shiny package
contain even more than we hope for.

And even while we’re delighting in new treasures,
let’s appreciate fully what we already have—
the blessings we take for granted.
Make a list, and check it twice.

And here’s to all you wonderful people
(wave glass around to encompass the whole group)
who are putting up with my toast;
I hope in the new year
you see yourselves the way I see you:
intelligent, interesting, and likable.

(Raise glass) To 2009:
May it give a whole new meaning
to the phrase, "the good life."

New to the Pulse, have questions on this posting.

1) Who are the "fiat of youth soccer politicians" who have declared the Shadow the premier club in Spokane?  Does Dragon know something the rest of us don't know?

2)  How do they get preferential times/dates/locations for tryouts by youth soccer bureaucrats when they are in a different association then SSC Elite and River City?

Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I'm very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.
