u11 u12 60 minute matches
« on: March 31, 2009, 01:15:46 AM »

two pratices a week w/ one game on the weekend, yes maybe two on some weekends but on most it's one game. thats not enough playing time. i'm not talkin bout summer tourneys- thats different.
i think the u11u12 matches should be longer. 60 minutes is not enough, especially for a coach who is tryin to get the subs some pt. how bout 70 minutes. thats only 5 more per half. u13u14u15 should be 80 and u16 and above should be 90. crazy? maybe but if your a playa you always want more pt.

when they're not winning... always thinkn', just 5 more minutes and we would've had 'em.

I'm in for longer halves

It has interesting that at the Federation level (USSF) and Internationally, many experts are now saying that is not developmentally the direction that we should be going in.  Not for the physical and psychological well being of our youngest players, but yet we keep going back to this debate.  We should take notice of things like the USSF Best Practices for Coaching Soccer in the United States as reference for what we are doing with and for these kids.  We should strive to measure the amount of play and training that they are involved in, so as to maintain each and every one of these kids in the Youth game, until they are no longer of an eligible age for our organization(s).

How about take less committed players on any one team and play the same amount of game lengths, but with less subs to worry about

VUSA...good points.
I once heard our state's coaching director suggest that the maximum roster size should be reduced from 18 to 14 when teams begin to play 11 v 11 soccer. He had two reasons for this. The first is that all kids get quality playing time. His second reason was that with the unlimited substitutions we allow in youth soccer, there was a concern at the national level that we aren't developing enough players capable of playing entire matches at pace without having to be taken off for a substitute. His point is that the game is meant to be played with a minimum of substitutions and that players at the highest level need to be able to expend a maximum effort for the duration of a match.

I don't see the problem with entending the little buggers 5 or 10 minutes per half.  I know we won state at U16 with only 14 peeps left with one player that could only go a few minutes because of injury.  My senior year in college, went entire season without being subbed (that is after getting hacked with NO SHIN GUARDS!!!  We walked both ways to school up hill in the snow too.

Poolboy...30-minute halves feel about right to me for the U-11s and their 9 v 9 game, but I don't think I'd have a problem with 35-minute halves for the U-12s.
