What Do People See in Reality Shows--Which Ones Are Best

For the life of me I can't figure out the allure of reality shows. On ocassion my wife will watch one and I will notice it as I read or wander around. Finally I sat down and watched one. I don't get it. Most of them are nothing more than glorified "lets make fun of people for entertainment purposes" shows. I get why the ones with young people are on. At their age I probably would jump at the chance to be stupid on t.v. For my information, what the the best reality shows. So far I have actually seen two and they both were amusing because of their ridiculous nature. Just trying to understand.

I don't get it either. And I feel the same about Dancing with the stars, American Idol and the other silliness. I hope folks realize that it's like WWE wrestling -- scripted. Where does it ever say that the competition/situations are absolutely fair and truthful etc.

I do like Idol.  Not so much the other ones anymore.

I understand the 'scripted' part, but I also like watching other shows........they are all scripted too.

I can say there is no point other then pure entertainment.
It's like watching sports or movies.  It does nothing for us, just entertainment.

there's 1 good reality show on TV, and it's real as heck. It's edited for drama, but the drama we see is as real as it gets;

I'm from the south and College Football is not just entertainment. It is a spiritual experience and not to be profaned.  ;D

I wish it was the same for soccer and I'm getting there.

Watching a bunch of cars drive around in circles does not better your life, put food on your table, doesn't give you an education.......It's just entertainment.

Don't get me wrong, I love watching sports.  But it's nothing more then watching reality shows.  You watch to follow your favs, you wanna see what happens next, you wanna see who wins and it's not over until the last showing.

Nothing but pure entertainment  ;)

Nope, no NASCAR although I will watch the Indy 500

And I forgot, this is the NW, you don't play college football here so you have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about.  :drinks:

I really have loved American Idol over the years but last season and the season before, I can't think of how many episodes I missed because I was so addicted to watching The Biggest Loser!!  I'm telling you, when they ran their 1/2 marathon last season it just brought tears to my eyes that they'd come so far!!
Not the kind of show you want to show how they are doing in future seasons though as I don't think the success rate is as good as AI (Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry, Carrie Underwood, even Jordin Sparks and David Cook are picking up)

I've been thinking about this a bit lately as I know some folks who've been approached by a reality show about participating and they're "on the fence".     
Kennard is SPOT ON   ...  the key, here:
Need compelling entertainment
Drama makes compelling entertainment
Drama needs to come from somewhere  ...  either occurs naturally, or is contrived or enhanced.
No greater drama than danger & death
Bering Sea is dangerous and people die.
No need to contrive extreme circumstances because these are extreme  (long hours, awful conditions, possibility of high pay, etc.)
Not much need to script much   ...   just let the cameras roll, and then edit the footage into something entertaining.

They're doing more of the "after the catch" programs, and these look scripted.  However, they 're less entertaining
