Dang. That was a lucky shot, but well placed. Howard missed it by barely an inch. >.<

poor job by the Ref.
terrible job by Bocanegra.
US marking seemed to be too slack too often.
US clearances and passing were substandard.

Ching showed why he should not be first choice as a forward.

si se puede!!!!

What was possession 80-20 Mexico? Did the US even want to play soccer? All I saw were long balls!!

I am with Juggles, if you are going to lose, at least try to play the game. :drinks: :drinks:

Did the talking heads give any reason why Ching was selected over Altidore?

okay, I just have to keep this thread going because I know that if Mexico would have lost, there would be a lot of talk on it.

What is wrong with the US team? Technique- did you see their 1st touch? This is what duffer keeps complaining about with the US team.

I heard some rumors about bad sportsmanship from the Mexicans, and some things about keeping the U.S. in a hotel where there were people making noise outside all night, so they couldn't sleep, people following them around everywhere yelling and screaming, and other things like that. Not sure if it's true, but if it is, that may be part of the reason we did so badly.

Yep! the US's poor showing vs Mexico runs much longer than this hotel stay.

Well in this guys opinion there were several problems....

1.  US flew in the night before the match in an effort to overcome the altitude I've heard of this before when you cannot get a team to an area weeks before to acclimate, however jet lag was evident (just another lame excuse though).

2.  Once we got the goal, it looked like the tactic that has failed us in the past was once again put into place, bunker.  The problem with our bunkering was that you must be able to clear balls from your final third and they need to go to the feet of YOUR players.  Good god, the US's touch was bad and their passing was worse.

3.  Landon looked like he was standing still when his man ran past him and scored the winning goal...whoa wait, he was standing still, guess there needs to be work on 1v1 defending.

4.  Was there fouling?  Sure.  Did the ref struggle at times?  Sure.  Did police need to use riot shield to shield Donovan from the Mexico fans that hurled cups filled with who knows what at him while he was taking a corner?  Sure.  Did any of this lose the game for us?  No.

5.  Mexicos game was well executed.  Immediate, high pressure on the ball when it was lost, well executed passes, and quick switches wore the US out.

My 3 cents worth.

>>>.  Landon looked like he was standing still when his man ran past him and scored the winning goal...whoa wait, he was standing still, guess there needs to be work on 1v1 defending.<<<

Donovan tried to mark to prevent the inside cut run of the Mexican winger.   The expected support from the fullback (Bocanegra, who had a terrible game) was not there down the field.   Donovan recovered quickly and chased the man down at the goal line.

Donovan, it was released today, is suffering from the swine flu.  He still put in a solid 94 minutes and was, with Gooch, the top US player on the field.

have you been following this swine flu story of the US squad?  :o  I've live in Hanover, so I'm a fan of 96, and Cherundolo is missing their game today because he's be quarantined!  :o  Has anyone heard anything similar about the other US players who are playing overseas?  Exactly how were they exposed to the swine flu?  Was it while they were in the US?  Down in Mexico?  Good thing the US squad doesn't have another game until Sept. 5!

checking further, I see Bradley is eligible for Gladbach in Germany, so either the quarantine ended on Saturday, or Cherundolo was quarantined but not Bradley.

One interesting about the swineflu pandemic is that in the US, it seems to have been no more fatal than the normal flu strains, but overseas, they are panicing about it.    Not sure what to make of this...
