Actually that point is a fair one but I am referring to coaches who offer spots prior to tryouts and I am also referring to players who in there mind might have a team as a first choice but until she attends tryouts ask questions from coach what her potential role is etc etc can she make a decision. Similar to going on a job interview. Do you always work at your first choice before asking valid questions on the position opening? After you have had a chance to get your questions answered on the fit then sure it is not right to put that prospective team on hold.
I agree w/you here. But honestly, for most kids playing up, they know coaches, they know teams, they know their own skill level, they know pretty much which position they're trying out for. And hopefully, like we do, we've been around to all the clubs over the past 3 or 4 months. We've guest played on their indoor team, we've sat in at practices, we've talked to other parents. Team scouting should be done way before try-outs. Coaches do it, shouldn't we ?
As for coaches 'pre-selecting' their team ? Come on, we all know it happens, it's not supposed to, but it does. Not fair ? Certainly not, but again, sports is tough and competitive, so is life. I want my kids prepared for life.
There really is no totally fair way to have try-outs. In truth, try-outs are not fair, the spots go to the best athletes with the most skill. That isn't fair to kids who have neither, but it's how sports and life really is.
When I go to a job interview I have a pretty good idea of what I'm looking for. If a job is offered to me and I choose to think about it, I know I may 'think about' my way out of that job. And the employer will tell me "we are looking to fill this position, if you do not accept it now we will continue to interview until we do so".
