Impact ready for Sounders: Two teams utilize a similar style

Quote

"It's playoff time and the nerves are setting in. We want to make sure we're sharp in every part of our game," Impact captain Mauro Biello said yesterday after the team wrapped up an intense practice at the Catalogna Soccerplexe in Lachine.

The Sounders soundly trounced their greatest rival, the Portland Timbers, on Sunday, beating them 2-0, winning the two-game series 3-0 overall.

"You could tell they were the much better team. They moved the ball, they possessed. They controlled the game, and played a smart game," Biello said of the Sounders.

Why This Game Is So Huge- Semi-final Round of USL First Division Playoffs:

This weekend’s game is the semi-final round of USL First Division playoffs and is a rematch of last year’s championship game. The Sounders and Impact faced off in the 2004 USL First Division Championship game where the Impact defeated the Sounders 2-0. The Sounders are on the hunt for revenge on Friday, September 23rd.

Graham, Burpo and Klaas Recognized by USL:

Sounders defender Taylor Graham was named to the All-United Soccer Leagues First team for playing every minute of every game (2520 minutes) for the Sounders while recording two goals. Goalkeeper Preston Burpo was named to the All-United Soccer Leagues Second team. Burpo finished second in the league in goals against average (0.85) and shutouts (12). He also finished third in wins (11) and played in all but one game for the Sounders. Midfielder CJ Klaas is a finalist for USL Rookie of the Year and Taylor Graham is a finalist for USL Defender of the Year.

About the Opponent:

Six Montreal Impact players are on the Canadian National Team that was here for Gold Cup in July. Impact goalkeeper Greg Sutton was named to the All- United Soccer Leagues First Division First Team. Three other Impact players were named to either the All-USL First Division First Team or Second Team. Montreal’s Gabriel Gervais is a finalist for Defender of the Year. Gervais was the Defender of the Year for the past two seasons. Mauro Biello is a finalist for Most Valuable Player and Head Coach Nick DeSantis is a finalist for Coach of the Year.

Battle of the Back Field:

Montreal ended their season with an 18-3-7 record which earned them top seed in the USL First Division and a bye in the first round of playoffs. With only 15 goals against in 28 games played the Impact, statistically, had the best defense in the USL First Division.

Seattle finished the 2005 season in fourth place with an 11-6-11 record. The Sounders were paired up against the fifth place Portland Timbers in the first round of playoffs last weekend and defeated them 3-0 aggregately to advance to the semi-finals. The Sounders have the third best defense in the league with only allowing 25 goals against. (Vancouver was in second with 21)

On A Roll:

The Sounders head into this weekend’s match on a three game winning streak. They defeated the Impact in the 2005 season finale on September 9th 1-0 and then overpowered the Timbers in the first two games of the playoffs with 1-0 and 2-0 victories, respectively. All three goals in the first round of playoffs were scored by forward Roger Levesque who was the Sounders 2005 regular season scoring leader with six goals. Levesque has scored three goals in post-season play for an overall goal total of nine. The Sounders are also on a three game, 270 minute shutout streak.

Catch All the Action on KKNW 1150- AM:

Due to radio conflicts, the Sounders game on Friday, September 23rd will be on tape delay and aired on KKNW 1150-AM immediately following the Seattle Thunderbirds game, approximately 10pm (PT). Sunday’s game will be broadcast live on KKNW 1150-AM at 1pm (PT). At this time, it appears that both broadcasts will be commentated by Montreal’s English radio.
