Let's look at this logcially -
A) The Administration either believes that it is good or neccessary to deal with press that can be critical of it or it does not.
B) It has decided not to.
C) That means that the Administration believes it is better off, and will be more successful, in not having any dealings with Fox News and other media that are criticial of it. (Or of its allies?)
This could be for various reasons.
!) A pure political calculation that the left wing (not being prejorative here, just a simple statement of fact) is stronger than the right wing, and cutting off all dealings with the right wing will paint them as extremists, to further isolate them. By playing to the left wing core that nominated Obama, and the left wing constituency that idolizes him, and the favorable press coverage, the Administration can be true to it's own political ideology and avoid unpleasant questioning of its statements, facts, plans and programs. This approach shows a belief that enough independants will believe what they hear from the other main stream news and the Administration to be able maintain sufficient working majorities in Congress to implement all the Administrations Plans.
(After this week in Virginia and New Jersey, the rationale for this approach is serious in question by the facts)
2) The Administration is simply incapable of dealing with unpleasant press. So it is less damaging to exclude anyone who is going to question anyone in the Administration rather than face them and be shown up.
3) This could be part of a plan to paint everyone who opposes the Obama Administration and its agenda as "the vast right wing conspiracy", an attempt to marginalize the opposition.
4) It may be an attempt to curry favor with the rest of the mainstream press, who all disposed to be friendly to the Obama Administration.
5) It may be an attempt to threaten the rest of the mainstream media, with "you don't play ball with us, you get cut off from access.".
(BTW - How many people saw the first episode of "V"? The sotry is that the studio ordered it, saw the first episodes which were already in the can, and fired the execuative producer and brought in someone new to redo the scripts. And the opening night was a great rating bonanza for ABC, using the work and scripts already in the can. For those who did not see it, some people see all sorts of allegories to Obama and his administration and the fears of the right wing about his administration/policies/ideals and the adulation that many give Obama.)
6) It may be that the Obama Administration sees those who disagree with them from the right as "Kooks". Seriously, these people might believe that every conservative is a whack job and should not be considered. That those to the right of the Obama adminsitration (I would call Castro to the right of the Obama administration) do not have legitimate opinions, views, or a right to know, because they are crazy.
Most likely, there are elements of many, if not all of the above points in the Administration decision. But each and everyone of the above six points is troubling in its own way. The mere effort by the administration to silence its critics in this way is not comforting to me as an American. As a rather conservative libertarian leaning person, I love it. I believe it will do him and his programs far more harm than it will help, and nothing like this pettiness and fear on the part of the Prez and his administration will discredit him faster. If he got caught having an orgy in the Oval office, the only ones who would care would be those who are dead set against him in the first place. Most of the liberals would only be sorry they were not there to service the Messiah. The centrists and moderates would shrug and hope that the release of pressure helped him rule better. But show that his administration is afraid to answer the questions of anyone critical and tries to hide, that everyone will begin to see.
