Nepotsim at it's finest in the White House.... wife leaves a few days ago and the husband becomes the top white house lawyer/counsel
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/theoval/post/2009/11/obama-legal-shop-craig-out-bauer-in/1

"Bauer, currently a partner at Perkins Coie, begins his new duties by the end of this year. Of note: He is married to soon-to-be-leaving Communications Director Anita Dunn, whose departure helped clear the way for this latest appointment."
"Bob Bauer, who was general counsel on Obama’s presidential campaign and a longtime adviser to Obama, has agreed to take Craig’s place. He is to take over as White House counsel by the end of the year."

Man, Kennedy having his bro' as Attorney General must have really pissed you off then. And that whole George Bush Sr. and Little Dubya must just kill you.....

I mean, these are the prez's advisers for gosh sakes. Do you really think that he has to go through some neutral hiring process?  :)

Come on.  Was Squash even alive when Kennedy was president?  You forgot the Roosevelts.  I think every president appoints all their friends to different positions so I guess this is another area where things have not "Changed".

Sorry, I don't get it. How would any pres go about picking his advisers? Is he or she not supposed to pick his own staff from the folks he or she knows and is comfortable with? Did I miss something, or did the prez say he would appoint people he didn't know to be his closest advisers?

Pick a real issue and I'm with you. There should be plenty out there rather than just making something up..... :drinks:

But this is a top level personal adviser post. What do you believe needs to "change" here? Or better yet, what is the problem with having your top advisers be folks you know and trust through long association?

I think I just agreed with you when I said that all Presidents do that.  The change part was just my way of saying this administration is no different than recent ones we have had.  They are still spending us in to oblivion.  The Obama administration just seems like a continuation of the Bush administration to me.

Ok. If you haven't figured it out yet. I'm really slow. At least you did come up with an issue that actually exists then: over spending.  :drinks:

I bought some rose colored glasses but unfortunately I still see it clear and I'm not buying all the lip service of change and hope. If you are so wrapped up being a democrat that you can't see issues that is your problem.

The fact is it is nepotism and think of it this way......the wife quit to spend more time with her son and husband and now he takes a position that requires more time away from the family. In other words she was full of $hit and just making room for him to take a position with his buddy...NEPOTISM baby!!!!  :drinks:

Why do you think I'm a democrat?

You don't have to be in any party to recognize that the position this guy is filling is one that, democratic prez or republican, is filled by folks extremely close to the prez.

By the way, nepotism (if it is relevant at all) is usually used to refer to hiring someone from one's own family..... :drinks:

I'm glad to see Bauer has high moral standards too, since we all know Clinton did not have sexual relations

"Bauer became general counsel of Obama's presidential campaign in the early days of the effort. During Bill Clinton's presidency, he was deeply involved in defending Clinton against impeachment charges."

I would have had less of an issue with him had it not been a wife and husband combo as well. It just stunk of BS and my favorite word in this thread nepotism  :drinks:

Why do you think I'm a democrat?

People make a lot of assumptions.  Just like so many people assume that Glenn Beck is a republican even though he is not a republican.                                                                                                                                                           I think it is more accurate to say someone is liberal, conservative or moderate.  You will find liberals, conservatives, and moderates in both parties.  My parents are very conservative democrats for example.

A direct response to you.  Those, along with mobster Tony Resco, are people that have long been close associates with Obama.   So they qualify under your definitions.

Lefty... i think you should look up the definition of nepotism. It is not limited to only family or relatives these days...you can find similar definitions on many sites this was from princeton.edu

S: (n) nepotism (favoritism shown to relatives or close friends by those in power (as by giving them jobs))

Ok, we will extend to include close friends. The pre'z's closest advisers have almost always been close friends or people they have known for many years. Why in the heck would it be otherwise? Whether this is a rep or a dem prez, it's just not an issue.

Did you really think that Obama pledged to go out and find only people he didn't know to be his close personal advisers?

If you need to come up with issues to bash one side or the other, EW and GotRythym can help?   :drinks: :drinks: :drinks: :drinks: :drinks:

I don't need reasons or look for them.....just looking for some Hope and Change. Change has been happening as people leave the White House staff...i guess that counts.  ;)

I was open to change but change can't just be the party in control..... I'm looking for the promises and campaign propaganda to be more than just empty.

I feel badly that he has become a party puppet, I was hoping he'd be different in some way. Call me Doped and Estrange   ;)

I think there are 2 different issues here.  They are nepotism and what I like to call the "power of association."  If I was president I would absolutely appoint friends, relatives, acquaintances. and others  whenever possible if I felt they were the best in that area and would help me further my agenda and goals for the country.  I think the president can appoint whoever he/she wants to appoint.  The second issue that I think Squash and others are bringing up is the extremely important issue of the power of association.  I think the majority of us keep a close eye on this as parents.  We don't want our kids hanging out with the kids that party all the time, get bad grades, and have "I hate everyone" written on their arm with permanent marker.  Why?  Because we understand as parents the "power of association" and if your kid starts hanging out with kids like that, it won't be too long before you start noticing the same behavior from your child.  Ironically, we seem to forget that this applies to adults as well as kids.  At work, you start hanging out with a group of guys or gals who are all divorced.  They invite you for a drink and before you know it, there you are, drinking and listening to everyone trash talk their ex.  You keep hanging out with this group long enough and after a while you start noticing that your spouse has all kinds of flaws and annoying habits and you start engaging in the trash talk about your spouse.  And eventually if this continues you are on the road to divorce yourself because you want to be like your friends. Your group of friends says a lot about who you are. So who are the president's friends?  What ideology do they subscribe to?  Your friends tend to be those that are like minded.  You may not agree on everything of course, but generally your friends are like minded.  So to say it doesn't matter that so many friends and appointees in the Obama administration have been associated with socialist groups,( or in the case of Van Jones a self avowed communist), and have anti capitalist views etc. is simply ignoring reality.  The president clearly has some very liberal views (redistribution of wealth being one-from Karl Marx)) and I don't see that as some secret. He has talked about it more than once.  Many of his advisors and spokesmen have espoused the same point of view which makes perfect sense.(Like minded)  So since Left Foot is always asking us to bring up a "real issue" to talk about and  I believe I have, I am going to ask Left Foot to be open minded and instead of dismissing others point of view for saying that those in the Obama administration and Obama himself are socialists/marxists,I am asking Left Foot to take some time to Really do some research on the backgrounds of the president's "friends."  I think there is legitimate reason for concern. Be open minded enough to look at everything.  There is no stronger evidence than the written and spoken word.

Agree with Trackside in that who wouldn't appoint friends that were qualified to positions of power. You want talented people you know you count on. If you already know some it would be common sense to appoint them. Every President does that. The "power of association" idea is interesting.  Have to think more on that.

No problem Squash, the democrats said the same thing about most of Bush's appointments. It is all in the eye of the beholder.

There may be ideological differences between the parties but their dogged pursuit of cronie-ism is identical. All in power surround themselves with sycophants!

I would go with our state politicians, who can't get the budget done during our standard legislative session and have to spend extra state taxpayers dollars ($114,000 to date) for the extended session to raise our taxes when they said previously no taxes.  What a travesty.
