I wanted to salute the true class act of the entire Emerald City 93 GU12 White team and their coach Nate Daligcon following the completion of the State Championship game on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Emerald City's talented team defeated the defending State Champion Crossfire '93 Schilperoort team by a score of 2-1. Several girls on the Crossfire team were visibly upset after losing the final match. In a show of good sportsmanship and genuine empathy,
the entire Emerald City team went over to the Crossfire team and congratulated them on their play. Coach Nick and Coach Todd shook hands and chatted about the game, and it was clear that it was a geniune show of mutual respect and love of soccer and not just some two-second cursory handshake line "Hi and Good bye."
Several of the ECFC players and their coach acknowledged that the Crossfire team had outplayed their team that day, but the final score told the story and Emerald City's fine young women will have the honor of representing Washington State at Regionals in 2006.
It made me both proud as a parent and proud as a member of the greater WSYSA family to see two quality teams come together in true sportsmanship in this way. It would have been very easy for the ECFC team to keep some distance from themselves after coming out on top and with the Championship trophy in their hands, but instead they recognized some teary eyes and reached out to the Crossfire girls as an entire team, which was much appreciated by players and parents alike.
I am encouraged by what I saw both during and after the game, and I hope that other teams will emulate the classy way that Emerald City's young ladies acted following their win at the 2006 State Championships. They showed some maturity beyond their years. Kudos to Coach Daligcon and to Emerald City!
