Running for Office
« on: December 21, 2009, 09:49:54 PM »

Soccer Guru's,

Just wanted to give you a preview. In two weeks I will be declaring my candidacy for the state legislature. Always thought about doing it and time is now. Decided it is time to stop saying what others should be doing and trying myself. No incumbent running so wide open. Never got around to seeing the movie the "Bucket List" but hear it was good. Guess it was about people who wanted to do things before the "kicked the bucket". This is on my list. If elected the first thing I am going to tax all soccer parents who are too involved on here. ;D Wait a second that would be me. Okay scratch that. Since I am well aware that our founding fathers never considered serving in politics to be a career I may not be in long. That belief in not making a career out of politics combined with my attitude to look at the good in people and work with them, (even if they are misguided politically) will not allow a long career. Throw in a tendency to go against the grain with my own party on a rare ocassion and I could be a one term legislator even if I managed to win. (a guy can dream) Always tell my students to dream big and take a shot at the title so have to practice what I preach. Currently just another poster but in a few weeks probably have to stop posting since there are probably rules against it if you are running for office. Anyway hoping this time next year I will be able to come on here after a long day listening and learning and still talk soccer. To my conservative friends feel free to keep that information coming. No one has a monopoly on the truth or good ideas unless it is my wife.  :D

Well I can't say I always agree with your politics but good luck on your run.  At least you are doing something!

"Land of the Free, Home of the Brave"  I thank you for being brave enough to step into this arena.  I believe that most political conversations end exactly where they should begin.  You have shown through your posts that you are able to see both sides of an issue and that you are not afraid to form opinions contrary to the conventional thinking.  I do not know who i am misquoting, but it seems appropriate..."To say that a small group of dedicated people cannot change the world is false, in fact it is that only way that change occurs."

I wish you good luck BBD.  Although I disagree with where our state is at and how we do things in these parts, I hope you can bring some semblance of decency in Olympia for all of those folks that are working hard in private sector and are a small business.  At least you will get free health care now if elected.

Everyone, thanks for the kind words whether you agree or disagree with me politically. No doubt I am a democrat and left of center. However, as someone who is working three jobs so my kids can play club soccer, my son gets to go to Italy in a big time orchestra, and my kids get the opportunities that that they earn or want. I have learned a lot about the people out there. The stories from people I work with make me appreciate everything I have. While I believe no child should go without health insurance and have many beliefs that many on here would call liberal I can tell you that what people want most is a job. It is amazing that there are so many people out there that don't want a handout but a hand up. Not sure how to do it yet but along with some of my liberal beliefs I sure won't be against anything that creates more jobs. Enjoy the holidays everyone.

Thank you for running; I hope it is a positive experience for you.   Please share your campaign website address with us when you have it up and running.  that way we can better follow the campaign.  There might even be one or two people who contribute to the cause !

Good luck, BBD!  We are not totally on the same page politically, but I truly admire you for stepping up and running for office. :drinks:

Given the mood in the country right now, you might want to switch your party affiliation to "None of the Above", BBDad!

Congratulations BBD!  What Legislative District are you running in?  I'm a PCO in the 33rd--just went to the Nominating Convention on Sunday to nominate our three legislators.  One has been a long time House member and plays on a basketball team with the legislators.  He sprained his ankle playing basketball and wasn't able to be at the caucus.  I'm a long time Dem and politically active--good luck--hope you make it to Olympia!!!

Decided not to run. Got advice that I am too much a maverick to be successful. Did not have to sign a loyalty oath but did get the impression that to go along you have to get along. I have no problem supporting my party and definitely believe it is the best one. As much as I am a proud Democrat we don't have the monopoly on good ideas, and on ocassion, come up with some really dumb ones. I just could not see myself trying to make the dumb ones sound good. Also, I belive in the art of compromise, not a talent that I am told lends itself to the current political climate.

Bummer.

Understand it, however
