Awfully quiet here
« on: January 11, 2010, 02:26:54 PM »

Haven't been around for a while. What's happened to the debate here?

Defenders tired of defending? Critics tired of criticizing? Come on, nothing is getting better. Is everyone just too tired now and given up?  We've got massive debts, massive and growing unemployment (843,000 Americans dropped from labor force last Dec keeps 10% unemployment steady instead of .4% increase). Public Option (translation: path to government run single-payer) in House healthcare bill, but specifically removed from Senate bill. Abortion funding in Senate bill, but specifically removed from House bill. Dems in both bodies prepared to oppose bill if they don't get their way. Republicans and most Democrats forbidden to participate in reconciliation. No conference committee hearings in unprecedented attempt by Pelosi, Reid and WH to write a NEW bill in secret and rush it through before anyone can see the result.

Case made and closed that Obama and his WH is made-up of extremist radicals, including communists, socialists, and Marxists. WH and national media in collusion using Saul Alinsky techniques of threats, bribes and personal destruction of Democrat senators and congressmen to get their way. WH readying efforts to take over the Internet and give amnesty to 12 million+ illegal aliens. Cap and Trade soon to return and threaten massive energy shortages and costs. The 9th Circuit Court has even ordered Washington in a precedent-setting case to allow felons to vote and cancel out the votes of law-abiding citizens.

Now suddenly we have Dems retiring right and left, like rats fleeing a sinking ship. But not before they cast votes to hand the federal government unprecedented control over every American. Soon a Fed bureaucrat will stand between every American - that means you and me - and their doctor. Citizens will be required to buy health insurance as a condition of legal citizenship, or potentially go to jail. Trillions more in taxes and fees. Government determination of what maximum health insurance coverages will be allowed and government WILL drive plans that exceed its defined maximum out of the market.

Plenty more to talk about. Stimulus an utter failure. AP reporting ZERO job growth in construction industries. Only part of the economy that has benefited has been government growth. Banking no better. Failures keep coming. Horizon Bank closed last week and another $569 million lost (we get to pay) because of the left's plan to force lenders to loan to people unqualified to borrow.

It's an election year. Who wants to step up and make the argument that Democrats are doing such a great job both nationally or here in Washington (facing another $2.6 billion deficit and looking to raise taxes) that they should be reelected? Anyone?

The Telegraph ran a very alarming article today on the economy.  Made me want to sell everything, buy gold and crawl into a hole.

I had not realised that Decemeber was the worst month for job losses since the Great Depression.   The real unemployment rate was no surprise, though.   Perhaps it will 20% this summer?

Oh, no worries. Obama says only 85,000 jobs were lost last month holding the unemployment rate steady at 10%. The national media affirms so it must be true. Unless, of course, you go to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and get the raw data. I wonder why the national media can't, or refuses to do the same? I found this late last week. Glenn Beck highlighted the 843,000 number today, but we all know that Obama says FoxNews doesn't report news and that he'd prefer we rely on MSNBC or CNN instead.

You see the trick is that if the numbers look really bad, the Labor Department can simply erase people from the labor force. Like the 843,000 that simply transitioned from unemployed to "Not in the labor force" last month.

Note that after a small pre-holiday uptick of temporary workers from October to November, 589,000 Americans actually found themselves unemployed in December, which normally would have increased unemployment to nearly 10.4%. But with 10 times the number deleted from the labor force as officially become employed, it more than offsets the losses. (73,000 increase in unemployed is seasonally-adjusted from the raw 85,000 that the Labor Department admits is too high because of the routine holiday uptick in temporary employment.)

A very telling trend is the Not in labor force numbers for 3rd to 4th qtr. In a nation with population always increasing, how does the labor force, people employed or looking for work, decrease by 1.35 million people in 3 months?  It doesn't! But if you trust the government, you'd never think to ask how they keep the official unemployment number from skyrocketing?  Now you know.

Pretty much sums it up for me, too.
Interesting and stimulating debate is good, regardless of whether there's agreement.
Unfortunately, there's seldom much of that present.

Agreement?  You want Agreement?

OK, let's all agree that Pat Robertson wins the award for the stupidest and most callous remarks of the year to date.
Time to head off to that retirement pulpit, Pat.    Someone take his mic away!

Yep, I agree as well.
Don't need agreement ,,,, I like mixing it up.   However, some of these posts are empty.   As they say in Spanish,  "No vale la pena"

Now, EW, exactly what is my pet issue?

And remember this -- Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice! Osama? Nope......

Come on Lefty, you cannot bitch about idiots who run for the Republican nomination without recognizing your own sides equally large idiots who run for the Demo nomination.

Hmmm... That is what I was trying to do with the "dopes on both sides of the political divide" comment. Sorry. It is never my intention to make you cross unintentionally.  :drinks:
