PDL Travel
« on: January 15, 2010, 12:48:34 AM »

Can anyone enlighten me as to the PDL guidelines regarding travel and game time starts. Specifically, if a team has to travel 3+ hours to a game, what is the earliest the home team can schedule the game? To me 10:30, 11:00 or 11:30 AM starts seems a little early; even 12:00 noon is stretching it. I realize you can travel the day before, but what if parent commitments or financial reasons make that impossible.

Also , if there is such a rule (or guideline) what is the incentive for the home team to follow it?

I would imagine the rule would be the same as the State rule, which reads

Teams traveling more than 2.5 hours for one game need to have time to travel in the same day. These games should not start before noon or after 3PM. Please contact these teams immediately to try to accommodate their needs.

Below is from the PDL guidelines:

1.13 Scheduling of Games
(a) Regularly scheduled PDL games shall have priority over any and all competition entered into by PDL teams.
(b) The PDL Administrators, PDL Committee, or Hosting Districts are responsible for scheduling of all games.  They have final authority to determine division seeding and playing dates
(c) The Home team determines field location, sideline policy and kick-off time. Teams must provide their Member Association Representatives with home game and requested kick-off time information:
(1) League games should be scheduled to begin no earlier than 9:00 AM and no later than 5:00 PM, unless agreed to by the visiting team in writing (includes fax and E-mail) at least two (2) weeks prior to the game.(2) Double header weekends: Saturday games should not be scheduled to start before 2:00 PM and Sunday games should start no later than noon, unless agreed to by the visiting team in writing (including fax and E-mail) at least two (2) weeks prior to the game.(3) Teams traveling more than 2.5 hours for one game need to have time to travel in the same day. These games should not start before noon or after 3:00 PM. The Association address of the traveling team to the scheduled game field determines travel time.(4) Failure to schedule game start times within the prescribed guidelines may result in a mandatory game reschedule at the discretion of the Hosting District Administrator.

But if they offer a time that works and it does not work for your team then they do not have to follow the rules.  Have your team manager keep an email trail.  It is common practice for some Spokane teams to try and get wins by saying you violated the rules, did not contact them ect.  My email notes got a forfeit overturned one time.

And those rules are winked at or simply ignored by some areas.

One thing to consider is that this time of year teams like to play on turf.  If the club has a lot of home games (including  state cup games too) then the available time slots might be limited and the other alternative is a grass (or mud) field which may be even less desirable.

It is to the advantage of teams used to practicing on bad fields to put their games on these same fields.

For state cup our draw has us traveling from NE Tacoma to Vancouver and Mt. Vernon, both of which are about 2 hours away and in both instances the games have been scheduled at 1:00.  As with everything open communication seems to work best.

I know I'm living in the land of the lost...but to me it is just wrong to use something like this to your teams advantage.  Seriously, does a team need to win so badly that they force the other team to fork out the money for a hotel or get up and start on the road at 6am for a game...therefor making their girls exhausted by play time?  There comes a point where this needs to be about the kids, if your team is truly better then make the playing field even.
