Heard that there were going to be around 40 players at the U 18 tryouts today. Wonder how many will be picked since you can have a large roster.

Suppose to avg 40 players at each age groups this weekend in attendance. Also heard if there are 30 best of the best players, that is what they will take, if there are only 20 then 20 it is. But the top rostered 18 have been picked for a while.

how do you  know this? I also heard that crossfire players couldn't try out because if you play for an academy team you can't try out for another academy team during the season. Someone said that 2 crossfire players are going to play for the Soiunders  how did they manage that. I don't think BJ will like that at all...lol

Anybody at the tryouts who has an impression about players who were there. Any surprises?

While it may be true that the U18 Sounders team is 'loaded', time will tell.  It also may be true that some of the parents of that team have loaded egos.  maybe they can tap into the collective ego to power the lights at starfire???

The rosters haven't even been announced yet.  How could you say the parents on the team have loaded egos?

And, who cares about the parents?  This is about youth soccer isn't it?

huh? you seem to know who is on the roster.  see your post from March 11.  could you be one of those parents with the loaded ego?
Yes, it should be just about the kids and not the parents

My post on the 11th was based off of the fact that WPFC was folding into the Sounders and the kids who will be going make up the core of the  (current WPFC) U-18 team, which is very competitive.  That tidbit combined with the fact that two players from Crossfire were moving and that everyone and their mother would show up to tryouts led me to believe that the team would be stacked.

Who are these ego driven parents you seem to think I am?

Heard that the two players who" left" crossfire were their 2 best. Also seems they told BJ that they wanted to play for the sounders for next season and wanted to stay with crossfire for the remainder of the season. They didn't leave the team but it sounds like that's the line BJ is putting foward. That guy must be a real piece of work. I give these players credit for telling them now instead of going to tryouts and pretending they will come back and then quitting after the season is over leaving the team in the lurch just before the new season starts.

You know of a roster anywhere, Soundersfan?  Also, will Seattle Soccer Examiner be covering the Sounders youth team also?

Does this all mean that there is no more ODP program for the boys side of things?  Anyone know the answer, I'm still trying to figure all this out. Thank you in advance for clarification.

ODP still exists.  For the younger age groups it is still the preeminent way to be seen (other than playing in a Super Y league back East).  As they get into the U15/U16 and older age range, ODP becomes much less important because of the Academy.  For those who do not have an Academy team in their area, however, ODP is still the best for all ages.

No, the ODP program fields teams from States across the spectrum of age groups for girls and boys from which players are selected for National teams.  The Academy program has club teams participating for boys in two age categories (U15/16 and U/17/18).

Rosters for both teams posted at soundersfc.com under youth, academy. 18 players listed for U16 and only 16 listed for U18.

So do these kids not play regular club anymore?  They are only allowed to play academy?  Do they allow them HS this year?

The players selected on Sunday will fulfill their obligations to their previous clubs and high schools, then join the Sounders FC academy in the summer. Major League Soccer clubs have the first opportunity to sign players who come up through their academy when the player decides to join the league.

Can these kids be cut off the 18 roster since their not actually in a season of league play for a while, and be replaced with kids in the pool? How does that all work ??? Or do they also have club teams they can play with?

Good questions. Please ask Darren Sawatzky of the Sounders: darrens@soundersfc.com

I cannot imagine players who were just picked being replaced on the roster. The current academy U16 players continue with their current teams through the end of their season which ends in June. They then become official members of the Sounders academy. The timing is totally weird in washington state because of having tryouts just after state cup and then having months until the new season starts.

In a PM I was told there is a pool of players together with the 18 man roster. If a players is hurt or can't make a game then they may choose a player from the pool. They said it was similiar to the way Crossfire & WPFC operates. That pool players will train once or twice a week with the rostered players as well as their league team.
It appears there may be player movement. My kid looks forward to next years tryout's, he's still a young 95 so there's time, especially if there is ODP and RTC's still.
Is that correct?

It's a good question. He also was supposed to sign with Seattle U, and as far as I know that didn't happen either.

Regarding promising talent... Do WPFC/Sounders/Crossfire staff or others do enough to come along side these players and nurture them to maturity?? Especially those with less than ideal parentage, school performance, peer groups, etc.., there is a great need for mentors to step up.

I think the Sounders FC Staff will be in the community, watching and helping the talented players that landscape the area. This is only the beginning of their program.I think there is more on the horizon, with many good things coming. I know my son sees Darren S. as a role model and mentor. He is someone that the kids can look up too and his door is always open. This I know for sure!!! Thank you Darren, Your doing a great job, we love you buddy.... :-*

Should just be college (not college scholarships). As we all know the vast majority of players will get little to no money for playing in college.
