Super-20 Northwest League
« on: April 01, 2010, 09:29:54 AM »

"United Soccer Leagues has entered into discussions with representatives from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia youth soccer associations about the expansion of USL’s men’s and women’s Super-20 Leagues into the Northwest," says the release. "The new Super-20 teams would begin play as early as the 2010 season."

"Representatives of the state and provincial associations for Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia met recently and agreed to explore the launch of a Super-20 division to bridge the developmental gap between youth and adult soccer in their areas."

Being involved in top-tier soccer in British Columbia I can tell you we are very excited to have this age group added to the region. It's an excellent link between u16 Super Y League and the PDL (Premier Development League). Up until now once players graduated the u16 SYL age range they either had to be good enough to play PDL or in the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency Program (which is in the PDL but is a u20 team with a smattering of VWFC first team guys recovering injury or suspension etc).

If not good enough for either of those two programs there was only the Pacific Coast Soccer League premier or u21. Traditionally this is a good league, but it has faltered. Once PCSL can link with the Canadian Soccer League (based in Ontario and Quebec) the standard will raise again. But it's really just a high level rec league. So the u21 league was not of a significant standard - the best athletes would win, not the best teams necessarily.

So adding Super 20 is outstanding and we are thrilled.

I believe the Canadians team will be Abbotsford (certain), Mountain from Burnaby, Coastal from Richmond, and Metro-Ford Coquitlam.

Those are 4  of the biggest clubs in the province. It is my hope a team from Surrey (Surrey United or Surrey FC) would join the Super 20 league as the largest population base. And lots of talent!

It would be nice to get a few more teams in Washington so travel can include more than one club down here.

There will be more teams in Washington. Oregon and Idaho are joining as well. Have to assume Crossfire and the other big clubs will join. I am guessing a 12-team league?? 4 Canadian max?

I found it interesting the article kept citing TFC was joining Super Y League....must be a miscommunication in the article?

3Rivers of the Tri-Cities has announced that they will try to put mens and womens teams together.

I think the league is not going forward. I know Abby has withdrawn as the only competition would be teams they already can play without entering a league. I believe all the BC teams have withdrawn as the American teams could not commit. BUT, this is unconfirmed re: all the BC teams except Abbotsford which I know has withdrawn. Their u20-aged players will be a reserve team for the u23 PDL team and play exhibition and tournaments.

Just go this email. Hmmm...
As of this morning the Crossfire Premier Club is taking over the Men’s Super 20 Franchise that was originally going to be run by Washington Youth Soccer.
The head coach will be Richard Reece and the assistant will be Greg Brisbon who left Western Washington to be a full time youth coach at Crossfire

This is probably a better move on WYS part.  Adult soccer is not a part of its mission and the team would have been affiliated with another US Soccer Federation member not USYS.

Reading thru the club directory, if it means anything, so far Crossfire, Spokane and Snohomish have registered. Ford-Metro (or metro-Ford?) from BC is all I see so far.
Edit-and Thurston County from Wa.

Should be interesting to see if the league grows after this season. It's a great reserve division for the PDL squads if so utilized.
