SOUNDERS CHAMPIONSHIP BOUND: Sounders Upset Number One Montreal 2-1

Posted 9/25/2005
MONTREAL, September 25, 2005 – A goal by Sounders forward Roger Levesque in the 90th minute allowed the Sounders to beat the Montreal Impact 2-1, Sunday, in front of 10,124 spectators at the Claude-Robillard Sports Complex.

With the victory, the Sounders advance to the United Soccer Leagues championship match for the second consecutive year. They will host the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, October 1st, 8 PM (PT) at Qwest Field pending United Soccer Leagues (USL) approval early Monday morning. The match will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel.

The Sounders, who came away from the first leg of the semi-finals series with a 2-2 draw versus Montreal at home, defeated the Impact in Montreal 2-1 on Sunday, which eliminated Montreal 4-3 aggregately. With Sunday’s win Seattle avenges last season's 2-0-championship defeat in Montreal while advancing to the final.

Heading into Sunday’s second game of the home and away series the Sounders gave up two goals in last four minutes of the match on Friday night. Head Coach Brian Schmetzer had to rally his troops to pull the huge upset against number one seed Montreal. The Sounders were without three key starters in Montreal on Sunday, Leighton O’Brien (playoff yellow card accumulation-suspension), Maykel Galindo (no photo ID allowing to travel) and Zach Scott (wife expecting first child).

Game Recap:

The Sounders opened the scoring in the 59th minute when forward Brent Whitfield jumped on a rebound following Gabe Sturm’s shot, sliding to push the ball into an empty net.

The Impact tied the score in the 72nd minute, when Charles Gbeke redirected a centering pass from defender Mauricio Vincello with a header. It was his third goal in two playoff games.

On the winning goal, Levesque took a shot from 25 yards out that deflected off Nevio Pizzolitto’s foot and dipped over goalkeeper Greg Sutton, who was caught flat-footed. It was Levesque’s fourth goal in the 2005 playoffs. The assist was credited to midfielder Andrew Gregor.

The Sounders now advance to the USL Championship Final, which will take place October 1, against the Richmond Kickers. The Kickers defeated the Rochester Raging Rhinos 4-2 aggregately in the other USL First Division playoff series.

Championship Weekend Live on Fox Soccer Channel:

The Seattle-Richmond game will be held in Seattle at Qwest Field on Saturday, October 1st, kick off is set for 8pm Pacific Time and will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel. Tickets for the championship game will go on sale at 10am Monday. Reserved seats are $20 and general admission seats are $15 and group tickets are available by calling the Sounders (reserved $15, general admission $10). Call 206.622.3415 or visit www.seattlesounders.net to purchase tickets.

Sounders-Richmond History:

The Sounders matched up against the Kickers for the first time in 2005 on June 3rd in Richmond. The Sounders defeated the Kicker 2-0 on goals from Ryan Edwards and Welton Melo. Both assists came from rookie midfielder and USL rookie of the year nominee CJ Klaas.

In their second meeting on August 13th at Qwest Field in Seattle, the Kickers came from behind in the 89th minute to tie the Sounders 1-1. Brent Whitfield scored on a Kevin Sakuda assist for the Sounders and Peter Luzak scored for the Kickers off Burke’s assist.

Richmond finished the 2005 regular season in sixth place with 39 points, 28 goals for and 30 goals against. They defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps in the first round of USL playoffs 5-4 aggregately to advance to the semi-finals. In the Semi-finals they defeated Rochester 4-2 aggregately to advance to the championship match. Defender Peter Luzack was named Second Team All-USL.

The Kickers will be without forward McColm Cephas in the championship game due to red card ejection in the semi- final game. Cephas has played in 21 regular season games tallying one goal for the Kickers.

Seattle finished in fourth place with 44 points, 33 goals for and 25 goals against in the 2005 regular season. They defeated the Portland Timbers in the first round of USL playoffs 3-0 aggregately; forward Roger Levesque scored all three goals. The Sounders advanced to the semi-finals were they defeated the Montreal Impact 4-3 to advance to the championship match.

Sounders Taylor Graham was named First Team All-USL and goalkeeper Preston Burpo was named Second Team All-USL. CJ Klaas is a contender for USL’s Rookie of the Year and Taylor Graham is a contender for USL Defender of the Year. The USL awards will be announced at the Championship game banquet.

Leighton O'Brien knows the chance of playing for a championship in pro soccer is rare. That's why the Seattle Sounders midfielder is willing to risk further injury to a hairline fracture of his right foot.

The eighth-year pro plans to take the field as a starter Saturday when the Sounders play host to the Richmond Kickers for the United Soccer Leagues (USL) First Division title.

"I've got to get surgery sometime, but not yet," O'Brien said after yesterday's practice, with a large bag of ice taped to his broken foot. "It would be surgery if not for us playing in the final. I'd definitely be out. With one wrong step, I could clean-break it. But I can't miss this game."
Yikes. Now every time he's involved in a tackle...(fingers crossed)...

Coach's direct approach guides Sounders to USL First Division final

Quote

"My teams are always game teams," he said. "I wasn't the fastest, strongest or biggest player, but I thought I was a smart soccer player. I turned average ability into a 15-plus-year career."

Over the years, the Sounders have been one of the city's most consistent professional sports franchises despite always carrying the label of a team playing in a second-level league. Schmetzer, 43, has upheld that tradition the past four seasons, guiding the Sounders to the league semifinals the last three years.

Tomorrow's title game marks the sixth time the club — original or current — played for the championship.

"I know [Schmetzer] was a feisty, hard-nosed, honest player and not one with the most talent," said Sounders general manager Adrian Hanauer. "He knew his role during his career was to feed superstars, ones like Preki. He played with a lot of superstars and fit in. Part of his success as a coach is where he came from as a player."

In four seasons directing the Sounders, Schmetzer has an 80-38-25 record for a .646 win percentage.

LINK: Levesque supplies timely lift for Sounders

"I can't say that I haven't been frustrated with the lack of goal scoring that has clearly been our Achilles' heel all season," Levesque said. "But we've put ourselves in a position to win a championship, so I couldn't be happier."

`I had a dream to become a professional player that could not be realized in Cuba,'' Galindo said through a translator. ``I don't have a doubt in my mind that I made the right decision.''

That decision came on July 9, when instead of going to the lobby, Galindo punched the elevator button for a random floor. He then followed exit signs to the parking garage of The Westin hotel in downtown Seattle and eventually found his way onto a transit bus.

Two months later, Galindo's bold move to defect has led to this: He will play for the Seattle Sounders on Saturday night in the United Soccer League First Division championship against the Richmond Kickers.

``It has been unbelievable, a dream come true,'' Galindo said.

Roger Levesque has seen 'em come and seen 'em go -- guys who start their soccer careers at forward, then drift back midfield and maybe even go all the way back to play defender.

``I've been fortunate enough to stick around,'' the second-year Seattle Sounder said.

He has stuck around up front by sticking balls into the net. And during the current USL First Division playoffs, which culminate tonight when the Sounders host the Richmond Kickers in the championship game at Qwest Field, no one has stuck them in more frequently than the spindly 6-foot-2, 175-pound Stanford graduate.

Levesque has four of Seattle's seven postseason goals -- all three in a first-round sweep of Portland, and the series winner in the final minute of regulation time last Sunday that put defending champion Montreal out of the postseason picture.
