Thanks for the Memories
« on: May 20, 2010, 10:19:46 AM »

As a parent of a player who is weeks away from graduation (not only from high school but youth soccer too), I wanted to thank this forum and everyone for the engaging and sometimes hilarious discussions posted here. As a true blood soccer mom, I have to tell you letting go is difficult. My son will move on to college and has the opportunity to play for his school, however it is far away and I realize my days of dressing like a marshmallow to stay warm and putting weather stripping around my edges to keep out the torrential rain are now at an end.  For all the discussions, frustrations and ups and downs that rec, select and premier brought to our family, my sons passion is why we stayed with it.  The life lessons learned far outweigh the carpool, lousy hotel rooms and other stuff endured along the way.  He has been fortunate to have great coaches and mentors and for that I am forever grateful.  For those of you just beginning, let your kid lead the way, that way... they stay with it, and love it and neither you or your player will regret the sacrifices when it ends.

For those of you still in the game, I got this email (not applicable to us anymore) but you may know someone out there who might be interested.  European scouts coming to Seattle in June.  http://www.eurosoccertryouts.com/  or Facebook http://facebook.com/GlobalSoccerManagement

Good luck to you all.  At the end of the day, the game belongs to the child, the triumphs and sadness belong to them too and it is our job to make sure they handle it all with grace and humility.

Two reasons:

1.  So every Tom, Dick and Harry doesn't show up for tryouts
2.  Money makes the world go round.

4allkids,
Thanks for the post/advice and congratulations on your son's upcoming graduation.  I'm sure you are proud.
Your experiences mirror ours so far though we are 4 years behind you...
I hope there will be opportunity for a "college" road trip (complete with lousy hotel  ;)) in your future...

They must need the money to bribe the European officials into issuing the work permits that American kids without European heritage would need to take up the professional contracts they have on offer.  That must be it!  Can't think of any other reason they'd ask kids to part with money.

$395?     Buyer beware.  They are promising 7 players will get a soccer contract.   How can they possibly do that and be legit?

Actually, they say a "Euro soccer contract".  And, by that they don't mean "European"---they mean "1 Euro"!   or about $1.25.    ;D

We all know it cost money to get people to work, I'm sure they have to pay the agents to come and look at talent. I don't know of anyone else offering to get my kids evaluated by european coaches to play in Europe, it sounds interesting to me....

I have a lump in my throat, and I am holding back tears. Soon this will be the situation for our oldest, and I too feel the experience of allowing the player to lead the way has proven to be the right path. We have been fortunate to have some great coaches, and really good clubs. Wishing you "4allkids" and your player the best, and what a wonderful testament of this great sport. It truly does make it all worth while.

 :( :'( :-\ :) :D ;D :drinks:

All my kids are done and right now our last nephew and neice are done. Until the little ones grow up, we have no teams to root for. Thanks for the wonderful insights--i agree with you.

On a side note for the european soccer, I know by reputation the organizer and he does have numerous contacts in the European soccer world. I can't speak for this particular endeavor, but  he is legit.

Best of luck to all those wrapping up these crazy and wonderful years!

Hey it doesn't have to end!  My DD is playing more now than she ever did.  Extremely competitive Club Soccer at her (admittedly out-of-state) University, but flights are cheap.  We've seen her play in tournaments in Colorado, California and the Club Nat'l Championship tournament (UCSB won for the third straight year) in Phoenix.  Beauty of club soccer in college is that it doesn't rule your life - she is still able to juggle with school.  Have your son look into it!

Well said. Similar story here. I am one of those who are willing to pay for top-level soccer as early as the DKs are ready. One DK started to play premier league at 8 and the other started at 14.  I think rec, select and premier all have their places but personally I cannot stand to have my kids play rec soccer. Select? hit and miss.

I agree, we too are willing to pay more for "top-level soccer." But most important than money, is where the boys feel more comfortable. The only did rec before they were 10, and since then it has been Select, and Premier.
