STRAIGHT FROM THE WHISTLES MOUTH!
Am I better referee today than I was yesterday? Will I be better referee tomorrow than I am today?
That is a mantra that I’ve preached to myself on a daily basis as I try to become a better soccer referee. We know that referees come in all shapes and sizes. Referees also have a different level of motivation as to why they have chosen this line of work. Regardless of that motivation it is apparent that we need to make sure that there is a minimum standard that referees must meet to continue to officiate.
The first part of those minimum standards is recertification each year. All referees must recertify bases on their level to maintain their badge (ability to work). As referees advance the physical fitness and advanced training come into play.
Fitness:
For Grade 6 and above there is a new fitness test in town, referred to as the “Beep Test”.
Out the door is the Cooper test:
12 minute run (2400m minimum)
50m (under 9 seconds)
200m (under 40 seconds)
The Beep Test involves:
Six 40m sprints in fewer than 6.6 second with a 90 second rest in between
12 laps around the field
Each lap has 150m run in 35 seconds, 50m rest for 40 seconds, 150m run in 35 seconds and 50m rest in 40 seconds.
I believe eventually a scaled down version this new beep test will trickle down to those who want to be Grade 7 referees and finally those who are grade 8 referees who normally work the games that many of your children play. Making sure that a referee can get around the field is a way of earning respect of those who play, coach and watch the game.
Advanced Training:
Most referee Chapters have some type of monthly training for deal with the basic 17 laws of the game. When we say advanced training it usually means getting a number of upper grade referees in a room where a more experienced viewpoint and thought process comes to the forefront. I believe that same process can be used with beginning referees. So what are we to do?
Review the laws of the game as often as possible. Review the Advice to Referees as often as possible. Go to the ussoccer.com website (referee) section and read the “ask the referee” section. Also on that site look at the weeks in review clips; where important decisions good and bad are discussed by those at the highest level. Perspective and advice are given with respect to the decision that were made on how to deal better with those decisions in the future.
The most important section of that website is page dedicated to the 10 Directives. I will call them The Bill of Rights to soccer. USSF has taken the laws and condensed our thought process to the 10 Directives. These directives are how the game is going to be refereed in the immediate future. This is what you see at the MLS, Division 2 (USL-1), PDL (Kitsap Pumas, Tacoma Tide etc…), and high level youth games where referees with the knowledge have been exposed to the training. As time goes by this thought process will trickle down to the referees who are just getting into the game.
Here are the 10 Directives:
· 100% Misconduct - Tactical and Red Card Tackles
· Assistant Referee Involvement
· Contact Above the Shoulder
· Dissent
· Free Kick and Restart Management
· Game Disrepute and Mass Confrontation
· Game Management Model - Foul Selection & Recognition
· Slides (.ppt)
· Handling the Ball
· Injury Management
· Managing the Technical Area
I’m happy the Pulse is back for at least one edition. It’s nice to see the transformation of the attitudes towards me and my fellow referees. Hopefully the thoughts and insights that we referees who frequent the sight give have been and will continue to be helpful along the way.
What does the future hold?
WIAA 4A Final on May 29th; I’ll be in the middle
Working the USL-PDL league thought out the state
Traveling to Albuquerque with 34 of my referee friends to represent you the State of Washington
Remember if you are out there. Stop and say “hello”. I’m always up for some questions about refereeing.

WPS' ~ IRON CHEF!
I started thinking about athlete's nutrition but focused toward the soccer player. And as I thought about soccer I remember seeing a pedometer hooked to Christine Lily for a game once. She ran almost 5 miles before she subbed out. So a diet focused toward a runner seemed appropriate. All kids young and old like fettucini alfredo. Here's a version for you runners/soccer players;
Fettuccine Alfredo
transform a heart-stopping dish, traditionally laden with heavy cream, butter, and cheese. Here, we re-create the sauce's velvety texture with Greek yogurt and chicken broth.
8 ounces whole-wheat fettuccine
1 tablespoon butter
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 teaspoons cornstarch
Pinch of ground nutmeg
3/4 cup low-fat, low-sodium chicken broth
3/4 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
3/4 cup 5 percent Greek yogurt
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add fettuccine; cook according to package directions.
While pasta cooks, melt butter in a large nonstick saute pan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook two minutes.
Combine cornstarch and nutmeg in a small bowl; whisk in chicken broth until smooth. Pour into saute pan, raise the heat, and bring sauce to a simmer, whisking occasionally.
Whisk in 1/2 cup of the cheese until melted. Remove pan from heat.
Whisk in yogurt until smooth.
Toss fettuccine with Alfredo sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Top pasta with remaining cheese. Serves four.

FROM STATE HQ'S TO YOUR PC!
Leadership Message from the President
Forty four years ago our organization was founded with the goal of bringing soccer opportunities to all kids in Washington State. Today we serve over 137,000 players age 5-19 years old, with 22,000 coaches on 14,000 teams and we are striving towards creating more soccer opportunities for more kids in every single area of the state. Thank you for joining us as we review the 2009/2010 season and look forward to our vision for the coming year.
As we moved into the 2009/2010 season last spring, the constitutional convention was passed at the 2009 Annual General Meeting. This new set of guidelines has allowed us to begin building a structure that not only supports our current model, but that will be functioning sound, effective and yet flexible enough to work 40 years from now with any and all changes the future brings to our organization.
This membership decision to move our association forward with an updated organizational structure has shaped our year and we have made great strides in assessing and adjusting our current system, reshaping our Technical Department, implementing new outreach programs, and increasing our communication channels. Washington Youth Soccer also is providing to our members a more precise and enthusiastic set of best business practices for governance and fiscal management of our associations.
This year we saw our partnership with the Seattle Sounders FC flourish. Through our partnership, the Olympic Development Program (ODP) was reworked with a new player centric development philosophy – which paid off with two ODP Region IV Championships wins. The Seattle Sounders FC Youth Foundation supported the new Regional Training Centers, which provide elite level training to the top players across the state at no cost to the players. Additionally, our players served as Ball managers for every 2009 home games and will continue to do so for the 2010 season. We continue to explore additional avenues to increase our marketing opportunities between Washington Youth Soccer and Seattle Sounders FC.
The Corporate Office Staff also saw changes this year with role adjustments for many and the addition of new positions and staff with the vision to propel our organization to the leading edge of our industry and improve our customer service.
We introduced The Long Term Player Development Plan which will be the guiding benchmark for all programs moving forward. The guidelines provide a standardized structured support plan to guide our clubs, coaches and parents in order to assist all our players to reach their full potential in the game.
2009 also saw the launch of our Soccer in Schools Program, the growth of Soccer Across Washington and the addition of a Director of Community Outreach to our staff to implement new tactics to increase the positive impact we can have on our local communities.
In addition we formed partnerships with one world 2011, (www.oneworld2011) where we will ask our Washington Youth Soccer families to join with us in hosting a child from the Middle East. Here, we can begin to not only bridge the gap between the western world and the Muslim world; we can share our experiences in the areas of law, medicine, and religion and of course soccer. Review this website and see how you can become part of this exciting partnership.
We also formed a partnership with British Columbia Soccer and Oregon Youth Soccer to create the “Soccer Pacific Alliance”. We will once again, promote games not only across the Canadian border, also between our Oregon neighbors, in the way of the Canadian exchange programs of days gone by, we will also create a “Northwest Champions League” for our elite teams as well as programs and functions that will surround World Cup events this summer. This partnership is unique in our region and our nation as we turn to our neighbors to co-sponsor events and activities for each of our memberships.
We are organizing a Washington Youth Soccer Alumni association for the purpose of recognizing our champions of days gone by, individuals that have contributed to our state, our region and the nation in various capacities including their communities. Look for upcoming information on this new project in our publications and our web site.
With strong, defined visions to guide us as we continue to modify our organizational structure and strengthen our player programs, we move into the 2010/2011 season with passion and commitment to serve as many players in the state of Washington as possible.
Yours in Soccer,
Doug Andreassen
President, Washington Youth Soccer

WPS' TOP TEN LISTS!
Top10 reasons soccer sucks!!! Shared for a WPS-Soccer laugh
10.it's the reason i keep hearing about david beckham
OK, I get it. British people like him. He married the ugliest Spice Girl. He's making a gabillion dollars doing some bullshit I don't care about. Great. Enough.
9.shinguards
Wait...they're going to kick me in the shins? How about we just make a rule where you're not allowed to kick each other? Wouldn't that be better?
8.goose shit
I'm not sure which one, but I'm fairly certain one of the official rules of soccer is "Game must take place in large toilet for waterfowl." Even better, you're wearing cleats, which is like you have a job picking up litter in a park, except instead of candy wrappers and old newspapers, it's turds.
7.soccer riots
When we have riots here in America, we address the problem. Remember the LA race riots? Race relations are totally fixed there now. But soccer games are like meth catnip for Europeans. They just go nuts for it. and everybody's all like "Oh, those crazy soccer hooligans."
No. It's a game played with feet, and no one should be getting this excited.
6.it's the reason i had to sit through "bend it like beckham"
Stupid movie about stupid Indian girl playing stupid soccer. Dumbass.
5.no hands
I have hands. If someone kicks a ball at me, I'm probably going to use my hands.
4.goalies can use their hands
Waitaminute, you just said you can't use your hands when you play--
F*** you, I'm not playing.
3.low scores
A lot of games will have a 1-0 score. And that's fine. If only five minutes have passed in the game.
Punch it up, you guys.
2.it's like watching a live game of video pong (only worse)
At least nobody acts like the stupid @sshole playing video pong is some kind of hero/role model/God.
1.all the damn running
If I see my bus pulling away down the street, I say "F*** it. Looks like I'm taking the next bus." There's no way I'm chasing a ball with my feet just so some Brazilian jerk can kick it in the other direction, and then I gotta go run that way. Uh-uh.
Maybe if you could use your hands, everybody could just stand in place and throw the ball to one another.
THE FAST LANE!
I get asked frequently about cars, trucks and SUVs. What to buy, what to watch out for, how do I really know I’m getting a good deal. What is that funny noise, why does my car smell like that, what really should I service at what intervals ? So I decided to come up with a little automobile column for the WPS readers. I’ll take a couple questions and answer them as best as I can. Maybe it won’t solve your problems but it will give you an idea of what may be possible so if you need the services of a professional you’ll be better equipped when dealing with them. It can be intimidating talking to a mechanic, I will try to help you understand some of the basics. Send your questions in a PM to me or Dragon and he will forward them to me.
I will also have a short blurb called; Pony Tales. I will recount some of the car shows, cruises and racing my wife and I will be involved in with our 2 Mustangs. All racing will be fully sanctioned and on a proper track, no street racing allowed, it’s illegal and dangerous. Got a fast car ? Take it to the track. I would also like to showcase a members car occasionally. Send me your info, year, make, model, special equipment and modifications done along with a link to a picture.

WPS FAMILY CIRCLE FOUNDATION!
There is no way we can have a Pulse and not include the WPS-FCF! Send us info on anyone that need's help, prayers, or just well wishes. We will post there story here in the Pulse each issue ;D
BRAT JR'S CORNER!
Nike World Cup ad
Featuring Nike's stable of superstar footballers like Didier Drogba, Wayne Rooney, Fabio Cannavaro, Landon Donovan and Cristiano Ronaldo, the short film is directed by Alejandro Inarritu ("21 Grams" and "Babel") and contains cameos from Roger Federer, Kobe Bryant and even Homer Simpson.
The story follows a match featuring all of these players (including Ronaldinho, who ended up not making Brazil's squad) and shows how one move can lead to a future of glittering success with statues in your honor and guest appearances on "The Simpsons" or washed-up destitution like a bearded Wayne Rooney with a beer gut, eating beans in a trailer park, all tying into Nike's "Write the Future" slogan.
I could say a lot more, but just watch it and enjoy.
