Thanks for the recap..... I don't get it what's to be proud of when the UW can't even beat SPU.... exibition or not. I don't mean it as disrespect to SPU either but if UW had decent coaching, which IMO they do not, this should not even be a game each time they play. I personally think Dean is a sell-out and a poor coach and until he is gone the UW will continue to be average unless the players take it upon themselves to win games despite Dean. I'll never understand UW soccer or why they continue to be average year in year out regardless of the talent of players they get. $:-\$

Is it any wonder that the best players in the state typically go elsewhere to play? Year after year I hear that he will be fired or that this is his last year.....what gives?

What is it that university teachers end of getting...... Oh yeah.... Tenure!!! The A.D. for some reason thinks he is a professor or something? I find it embarrassing but hey I'm just one opinion out there. I do know when the UW kept NewWeasal as the football coach longer than I liked I did not renew my season tickets.....led with my checkbook.

1. UCSB is serious academics - acceptance rate is probably lower than Cal or UCLA. Simple math: number of applicants vs number of slots, and I think they had over 40,000 applicants a year ago.

2. Soccer program is great for both NCAA AND Club. My DD plays club for Colorado, UCSB Women's Club Team has won College Club Soccer National Championships (they have a tournament) the last 3 years in a row. Rumor is the varsity team used to play them in friendlies but stopped a few years back because the club team beat the varsity.

I don't think there is any need to defend UCSB. They are/were a highly ranked team that lost a game they "should" have won.

Not serious academics for an athlete. Alot of their players are JC transfers. presumably unable to qualify out of high school. All this stuff about how academic a school is doesn't apply if you are an athlete. However,they are a very good soccer program. seem to have a pipeline to Yavapai JC in arizona.

Interesting to read how many of the top players on the nationally ranked teams are JC transfers from overseas. Certain schools are building pipelines to certain african countries and bringing in 2-3 players a year via the JC route. On one hand I hope it improves the quality of college soccer (it's quite painful to watch), on the other hand it appears to be exploiting the players being brought in at the same time limiting the number of scholarships available to US youth players.

Having personally been run through the grist mill at a D-1 school and watched other players get pressured to change majors to less academically challenging ones I can't assume that the coaches have the best interests of their foreign players at heart.

I'd like the team to do well but i think coaching will hold them back and it's just my opinion but i think the Pac-10 coaches were a lot sharper than Dean when they picked them..7th.

There was a solid Hanford HS (Richland, WA) connection today in Dubuque, Iowa as Clarke University hosted Lawrence University (St Louis). Dino Ramic, Matthew Smith, and Austin Law all played for and graduated from Hanford HS, while Stephan Exarhos of Lawrence did the same. Interestingly enough, one of the Clarke University Women's team players also came from Hanford HS.

The score of the Clarke-Lawrence Men's game was 4-0, for Clarke. Accounts say that Stephan Exarhos was a top player for Lawrence in this game.

What is interesting is not that all these players played on a team coached (at some point or another) for one of the posters in this forum, nor that 3 of the five players achieved soccer scholarships without help of their local soccer club, but that they all came from the same HS and ended up in the midwest.
