hmmm
« on: August 09, 2010, 12:39:28 PM »

You will simply not believe this.  Arizona's  8th District US Congressional representative,
the Hon. Gabrielle Giffords, in a meeting of the House Armed Services Committee,
asked General David Petraeus the following question:

"General Petraeus, what are you doing to reduce carbon emissions in the war on terror?"
Wow.  I had to read, and re-read this several times to believe it. Folks, there are American
sons and daughters dying every week on the foreign battlefields of southwest Asia. The nation is completely bankrupt and ... quite literally, borrowing 43 cents for every dollar in federal spending.  We have the largest environmental disaster in the nation's history in the Gulf of Mexico, and we have Mexican drug armies invading our nation.  And yet ....
A member of Congress from Arizona's 8th congressional district took
the time to ask our battlefield commander what he is doing to curb
carbon emissions in the war.
Gabrielle Giffords is the poster-child for what is wrong with the US Congress. We are
being led by imbeciles.

Also According to Google:
Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-Az) took Afghan Commander, General David Petraeus, to task for what she characterized as "willful disregard of the environmental impact of our war effort." "There is no policy, no plan to minimize carbon emissions in our military activities," Giffords charged. "Bombs are dropped and bullets are fired without considering the environmental impact."
Giffords insisted that she was "not demanding an immediate halt to current military operations in the Middle East. I'm just saying that battle plans should include an environmental impact assessment as a regular part of the process before attacks are launched."

She also suggested that the Army "put more emphasis on less environmentally damaging methods, like stabbing or clubbing enemy forces in order to minimize the carbon output."

Link please. The only item I saw was a question and answer involving how to save billions of dollars by reducing energy costs.

Here is a link to snopes about this which indicates that it is false and based upon a characterization of the remarks by a political opponent.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/giffords.asp

Maybe you meant this to be a "funny" or maybe you are taking tips from Rush, Oberman and the gang?

In any case, knowing the facts may not change your mind. But you wouldn't be alone:

When Corrections Fail:
The persistence of political misperceptions
Brendan Nyhan

Jason Reifler

Abstract
An extensive literature addresses citizen ignorance, but very little research focuses on
misperceptions. Can these false or unsubstantiated beliefs about politics be corrected?
Previous studies have not tested the efficacy of corrections in a realistic format. We
conducted four experiments in which subjects read mock news articles that included
either a misleading claim from a politician, or a misleading claim and a correction.
Results indicate that corrections frequently fail to reduce misperceptions among the
targeted ideological group. We also document several instances of a “backfire effect” in
which corrections actually increase misperceptions among the group in question.

Thanks for posting the link to the video.  I watched the entire clip.   She seemed okay   . . .  was courteous to the general and asked a thoughtful question that seemed based on practcal considerations.   The general's response was impressive.

Certainly, watching the video leads one to a starkly different view than the original link.  That text appears distorted to the point of lacking integrity.

I love Snopes.  Whenever I get an email that seems preposterous, I look to snopes (or urbanlegends).

They almost always set the issue straight.

This one has video to back it up too.  Hard to go wrong there (not impossible, but hard)

The sad thing is, as the research I cited suggests, setting the issue straight seldom corrects the misconceptions held by the "converted".  :drinks:

How about this?

Fox News host Glenn Beck’s media “empire” is the cover story of the newest issue of Forbes Magazine. In the story, Beck reveals that his media company Glenn Beck Inc. made $32 million in revenue in the period between March 2009 and March 2010. The host also explains that he sees himself much more as an entertainer than a political activist, saying that he doesn’t “give a flying crap about the political process”:

With a deadpan, Beck insists that he is not political: “I could give a flying crap about the political process. Making money, on the other hand, is to be taken very seriously, and controversy is its own coinage. We’re an entertainment company,” Beck says.

“I don’t necessarily believe that [what Beck says] is reflective of his own personal politics — I don’t even know if he has personal politics,” Michael Harrison, the publisher of Talkers magazine tells Forbes. “I see him as a performer.”

This isn’t the first time Beck has suggested he isn’t as radically conservative as he seems. In February he told USA Weekend that “you’d have to be an idiot” to “not notice the temperature change” caused by global warming, and that he thinks mankind may play a significant role in the phenomenon. Beck has previously described himself as “a rodeo clown” and conceded, “If you take what I say as gospel, you’re an idiot”

Wonder if this is true?

Which is why so many Americans, particularly people like lefty, believe that it was Sarah Palin who said "I can see Russia from my front door", when it was Tina Fey of SNL fame.

Looks like you might have to put bigb in that boat as well.

Now, I didn't base my view of SP on the Russia comment. She did plenty in interviews -- assuming they weren't all doctored -- to give me an idea that she was at least capable of making the Russia statement.

So, let's continue the test, is the snopes article sufficient to prove to you that bigb's post was a bunch of hogwash?

Actually, Tina Fey's parody was based on Governor Palin's response to a question from ABC news about her foreign policy experience.  Governor Palin said that "...you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska."

Adding insult to injury, it was also well-documented that Governor Palin has never been to Little Diomede Island

Good one, lugnut. So EW, now that your mis-perception has been pointed out, have you changed your mind about the event?

There is only about 100 people a year who go out there, so there is no shame on Palin not visiting the islands.
Personally, I thought that her response was a clever riposte.  For those who know Alaska, it is understood that Alaska used to be Russian, still has ethnic/linguistic Russian enclaves (Old Believers among others), and it's proximity to Russia was of major impact during the Cold War.  Russia - and relations with Russia during and since the breakup of the USSR - have an impact on Alaska.   Trade, fishing, immigration, scientific cooperation, native affairs, business, etc.    Pointing out the Proximity to someone who thinks the world starts in DC and ends in NY City should have made her point.   Alas, some were not clever enough to catch it.

After listening to Sarah for the past two years, "clever" is about the last word I'd associate with her.  Good try, though!

EW...you can't be serious with this.  You are clearly an intelligent person and I wouldn't expect something like this from you.  Sarah Palin is not, by ANY stretch of the imagination, clever.  She is famous because she's a MILF who happened to be in office.

I am not a Sarah Palin supporter.   Stating that she is better qualified than Barak Obama was is really "damning by faint praise".   But the liberal media hatchet job that was done on her was rather disgusting.

A lot of people discount her because of her looks.  That is rather discriminatory.

So, was the Katie Kouric interview a hatchet job? (I think that is who interviewed her) And I think she has really shown her stripes lately as a FOX commentator and overall Rush wannabe. More money in that line of work anyway.

Lefty, you are just jealous because all the hotties are Conservatives, while the female Democrats are hags like Pelosi, Murray, Waters and Clinton.
Seriously, take away the teleprompter and remove the Liberal Journo-lists throwing softballs to Obama, and see how he responds (20 minute off topic monologues, I know!).
And Palin was definitely not ready for the Couric interview, and then she froze up.   Al Gore invented the internet.  Biden, well Biden is Biden, which is infinitely mroe embarrassing.
