I want the Huskies to aggressively seek out a top-FIVE (in the nation) kind of coach. A guy that will come in here and say "Our targets are Santa Barbra, UCLA and the National Title. First we win the West Coast, then we win it all."

from the article....what "good local talent" did he keep at home?  Most of the top players ahve gone elsewhere because washington has zero history of being a top tier program. Most of the "good local talent" have been players who did well in high school soccer but not much on the national scene.

I wonder what big club in the Puget Sound area is looking for a $100K a year DoC?
Who would have thunk that both Bobbie Howe and Dean Wurzburger would leave in the same year?

This is a good roster. One that was more than capable (almost did) make the tournament.

Here's the issue.  UW is a good school pushing to have teams in the NCAA tournaments.  There is no reason, UW shouldn't own WA recruits and venture into Cali for the rest (much like football).  If you can't consistently make the tournament, you should go.  I think this was just an honorable way out.  And yes, if Leslie didn't make it this year she would have been gone as well.

This kind of pressure existed on the Olympic sports when Barbara was the AD (she just forgot about her moneymaker).   Woodard has got the football on track and now is pressuring the Olympic sport coaches to reach the next tier.  No doubt they'll make a move for a top coach.

We need new blood anyway, the style of play was junk (IMHO).  But I have to say, heck of a guy and good trainer of coaches.

Washington had a good argument to make the tournament (after UC Irvine). New Mexico had a representative on the selection commitee that helped them get in before Washington. New Mexico had only nine wins and could not even make the championship game for their league. Dean most likely would have stayed if the team made the tournament.

My view is that UW is not a prime contender for the playoffs until the roster upgrades.  To contend, the coach has to sop up all the best talent from Washington plus bring in some impact players from outside.  And that isn't going to happen until they get lucky and build a winning  tradition.  There are too many reasons for top Washington talent to go elsewhere to play, and too few reasons for outside talent to come here.  Woodward better choose a good recruiter.

LOVE the way Kelley sees UW as a 'big' soccer school just waiting...

As for Fewing...I am not sure. He'd need to morph into a bit more of a secular / modern type of guy to reach today's soccer recruits.

I too like Peter, but would like to see him be an Asst. at the NCAA Div 1 level prior to him getting a Pac-10/12 head job.  There is a lot more than what he needed to do at SU.  Besides, can he recruit in Cal?

The prime target for this position should be someone who can keep the local recruits, but also go into SoCal and pick up major contributors.   Dean wasn't able to do that.  We are always going to lose a couple to the out-of-state, competitive Div I programs (some kids just want the sunshine, some will chose to be a part of immediate national contenders).

My recommendations, if it means anything, is Pieter Lehrer (Asst. Coach at Cal), or Greg Wilson (Asst. Coach at UCSB).  Both are known recruiters with California ties and have Div 1 credentials with successful programs.

Good luck dawgs.

During my interviews with Darren Sawatzky this week I caught him by surprise when I asked out of the blue: "Are you going to apply for the UW vacancy?"

http://www.examiner.com/soccer-in-seattle/looking-forward-with-darren-sawatzky-plus-sounders-whitecaps-youth-match-photos

I end the conversation with Darren talking about the open coaching job at the University of Washington. He's caught by surprise when I ask him whether or not he might be a candidate for the position. “I am not going to answer that because I have a great job right now. I thoroughly enjoyed being a Husky (assistant coach in the mid 2000's). Right now I thoroughly I enjoy being the Sounders FC Director of Youth Development.”

So I ask him what type of person he thinks would be a good choice for the UW job. “A charismatic recruiter, someone who understands the NCAA. It's changed quite a bit. If you look at the schools who are actually winning...the Wake Forest's, the Akron's...their recruiting pipelines are coming from all over the place. You've got to be diverse in your recruiting and you've got to keep your local guys local.”

Then I half-jokingly ask Darren if he has his bachelor's degree, a UW coaching applicant requirement.

He says quickly, “I most certainly do.”

And look where the best players in the state are going in the fall...Akron, Wake Forest, Duke...............

Any word on if they have name a coach/ candidates / anything? Or is the AD showing his true colors and making it obvious that only mens basketball and football matter?

I mean seriously can we get a little press on this? The UW mens soccer team has the potential to be a powerhouse if they get the right coach.

I'd love to see Kasey Keller throw his name in.  With Brandon as assistant coach, UW would have world class professionals running their program rather than an old alumni who played before soccer was soccer....

Agree with Squash, UW should be a powerhouse program.

I know this sounds selfish, but I'd love to see them use their money and steal a coach from Akron / Creighton / William and Mary/ Butler or any other school that is in the top25 year in year out that the UW definitely has the money power to pay for and start with a proven coach who has proven they can recruit/coach/win in a lesser known school/area.

Some would laugh at being able to get a the coach from Akron, but lets be honest money talks and prestige and winning is just as possible at the UW.....all it takes is an AD will balls and a willingness to want the best for the sport at the UW. I say aim big and steal a proven winner that can build a real traditional powerhouse.
