No important soccer news, and lots of international news, lots of budget battles in the USA, and the finnance ministers of the G-20 are meeting and politely accusing each other ruining each others and their own economies.  So I will wait until later this weekend until posting a new missive.

In England, it was an FA Cup weekend.   Manchester United squeaked by a non-league side (something like the 4th division?) 1-0, and Arsenal was held to a 1-1 draw by Leytan Orient.   (Go ahead, ask WHO?).   Everton knocked Chelsea out of the Cup on penalty kicks.

The schedule is out for the round of 8 -

Stoke City  v West Ham or Burnley
Manchester City or Aston Villa  v Everton or Reading
Birmingham City  v Bolton
Manchester United  v Leyton Orient or Arsenal

I'll pick Stoke, Everton, Bolton, and Manchester United.

In Scotland, Celtic wiped out the Rangers 3-0.Maurice Edu played the entire game for Rangers, who fall to 8 points behind Celtic in the race for the Scottish title.

In Italy, Claudio Ranerii has submitted his resignation as coach after Roma crashed again.   The Board is considering it, will announce tomorrow what their decision is.   Roma finished second last season, two points out, under Ranerii.

In Spain, Barcelona struggled to a 2-1 victory over Atletico Bilbao.  Villa scored early, Messi scored late, and Pinto did decently in goal.   Puyol is still injured, and now Victor Valdes, who has been having his bess year ever, is out for up to six weeks and may need surgery.  He hurt his knee in training.   Real Madrid won easily this weekend.  Messi has know scored 25 goals in La Liga this season, while Crybaby Ronaldo has 24.

In the USA, MLS teams continue to sign players from Europe and from their own youth systems.   It will not be surprising to see some experienced players get cut before the season opens and then get picked up elsewhere.   That's how the Sounders got Noonan last year.  Vancouver has picked up Alain Rochet, a Swiss-Canadian who played professionally in Switzerland and is a defender.   Portland has picked up American forward Kenny Cooper who never broke through in Europe.

International News - Libya's dictator's sons are coordinating the government response to the protests therre.   Over 200 hundred dead and more than 1,000 injured.  Some of the secret police reportedly ran out of bullets and so took to firing RPGs at individual demonstrators.   Two the desert nations tribes have had their tribal leaders come out against the rule of Ghaddafy, and one threatened to stop the flow of oil out of the desert.
Peaceful marches in Morrocco and Jordan.   Potential Unrest in Syria appears to have been still born by the pre-emptive arrest of ringleaders and bloggers.   More people arrested, disappearred, beaten and shot in Iran.    Continued demonstrations in Yemen, including the Southern Separatists.  Algieria is also seeing big attempted demonstrations and the police are acting to break them up before they can coalesce.   Bahrain has become a very iffy situation, with the government apparently unsure of what measures to take.  Security forces will take a hard line one day, and then get pulled off the streets the next.
China is censoring its internet again, forbidding any use of the word "Jasmine"  (as in Jasmine Revolutions).   Dozens of dissidents and human rights officials have been arrested, detained or disappeared.
No recent news out of Albania, but since it is Albania, most likely that means that nobody outside of Albania gives a rats behind at what is going on there.......

Iceland is going to have another national referendum on whether or not to repay the Netherlands and the UK for bailing out their largest bank.   The first referendum was voted down.

Royal Wedding news -  In a move that is raising international eyebrows, President Obama was left off the guest list.  The Beckhams are going though.  Folks, the Governor General of Bermuda will be attending.   With something like 1,900 guests for the main event, it is not because there is no room that the US President is not invited to the Royal Wedding.  This is a sign of how bad relations have gotten between the US government and the British government.  If things get any worse, we may stop importing their soccer coaches.

Pakistan - The American Diplomat held in a Pakistani jail is reported to be - >gasp< >shock< - a CIA agent.  This has been reported by the TV station in his home town and in English newspapers.   He did have accredited diplomatic status.   The two men he shot were found to have stolen cell phones, forged documents, foreign money and unregistered handguns.  Local police are calling them "simple robbers", and denying stories that they were linked to the ISI, the  very powerful and semi-independant Pakistani Security and Intelligence Agency.  The ISI are denying that these two thugs were theirs, and denying that they were part of the local Taliban.   In this part of Pakistan, they could have been all 3.   The ISI is suspected of having played a role in the Mumbai Massacre in India and is pissed off that their leader is being sued in a New York court.   The Pakistani government, never very stable at the best of times, is afraid that releasing the accredited diplomat will start a Jasmine Revolution there, too.   This is a country with nuclear weapons, the Taliban, a rogue intelligence agency, they are rabidly anti-American, and a less than cohesive sense of national identity.  Oh, and they are Muslim and involved in sectarian strife with their Hindu neighbors, who also have nukes.   Not gonna be on my list of places to vacation for a while...........  Don't forget, 100,000 Americans and Allied personnel in Afghanistan are supplied through Pakistan.

EW is up in Alaska this week, so do not expect a new posting here until the weekend at the earliest.
And please, do not ask if it is "Business or Pleasure" as this is the month of February.  It was 2 degrees last night outside my hotel!  Only dogsledders come up here for pleasure.   And now I am awaiting a flight out of Anchorage to Homer, where I will hopefully be transported off into the hinterlands to a cabin for the rest of the week.  Last time I was there in the winter, ran into a couple of moose on the way to the outhouse.

Final thoughts -
Not concerned about Madrid tieing Lyon at Lyon.   Madrid will win at home.
Chelsea 2-0 over Copenhagen.   Surprised that it was not more.
Raneri out at Roma.   He will come back someplace else.
Rumor of Frankie Adu coming back to the MLS.  Only after his contract is cancelled overseas.
Sounders will win season opener.

International Predictions - Moamar Gaddafy will be dead by the end of March.   Probably within 3 weeks.   Very few people are loyal to him.
National Predictions - Wisconsin will see lay offs of about 10,000 union employees.  The unions will not strike, fearing another 10,000 layoffs.    Domestic Political Polarization will continue.   Obama will not veto the budget from Congress, because the Dems in the Senate will block any budget from being approved.   Federal government shut down.

EW is back from the frozen North, to the Frozen wastes of Washington soccer -  So the posting will continue -

International soccer -
The biggest swing was in Spain, where Barcelona was facing a pesky Mallorca side in Palma de Mallorca (where it is nice and warm and you can swim in the sea today!) while Real Madrid went to Deportivo La Coruna, on the Bay of Biscay (where it is cold).   Barca was without four of its stalwarts out because of injury or suspension (Xavi, Alves, Valdes the GK and Puyol the captain) and Mallorca has been tough at home.  Many were predicting a draw in this match.
However, Barca ran away with the game, 3-0 with all three forwards scoring.   Real Madrid had been expected to win at La Coruna, and they did indeed dominate everywhere but on the scoresheet.  The Evil Empire, the Fascist's Favorite Club, the Darling of the State, were held to a 0-0 tie.   This opens up Barca's lead back to seven points.  Barcalona would have to melt down for Real to catch them at this point.
Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho whined to the press after his team's draw "We played against 1 goalkeeper and ten defenders".   Hey Jose, isn't that how you played against Barcelona at the Nou Camp last year?

In Germany, Dortmund spanked Bayern Munich 3-1 to extend their lead atop the Bundesliga to insurmountable proportions.  They are about 13 points ahead of the second place team and now 16 ahead of Bayern.  You can use ink to write them in as league champs this time out.   Bayern is in danger of losing out on an automatic Champions league berth for next year.  If they do, they might well have a new coach, and some of their players might bolt.     Dortmund is playing some quality soccer right now.

In Scotland, Rangers are still reelling from last weeks 0-3 loss to Celtic, and just barely have held onto second place.  It looks like you can Pencil in Celtic as league Champs there.  In Italy, Juventus lost again.

In England, the big news is not Alex Ferguson publicly writing off Man City's title aspirations (it has been obvious for a couple of weeks that City would not close in) nor is it the goal that Sturridge (considered by Liverpool as a transfer target in the January window) scored to tie Newcastle in the match on Saturday for Bolton.  Nor is it that Arsenal have swooped in on a 16 year old midfielder playing for the "E" team of Bracelona (cost estimated at 350,000 euros) but it involves Chelsea, who did not even play today.   Stories coming out of England are that Cashley Cole, screwing around in the lockerroom at training, brought in a .22 caliber air rifle.   You can see where this is going.....    He was "larking around", pointed it a worker, and shot him from 5 feet away.   Shades of the NBA.........  The 21 year old man was treated for the wound in his chest and given two days off.   The club has tried to hush this up, and yet it leaked out.   No police report was filed, which is going to upset some Bobbies inordinately.

Americans oversees have not been having much success recently.  Michael Bradley was on the bench for Aston Villa and remained there the entire match.
Carlos Bocanegra's St. Eteine  (he is the team cvaptain) was booed off the pitch by their home fans after a 2-0 loss.
Tim Howard did have a shutout for Everton as they blanked Sunderland 2-0.   ;D
Holden played the entire match for Bolton, but was not all that distinguished.

In MLS news - There isn't much.   Season is only about two weeks away, and the Sounders have not decided upon a starting lineup.

Youth International  _ The USA U-17s beat Jamaica to earn a spot at the U-17 WC.

FANS -  Various bodies are investigating both sets of fans at the Man United at Marseilles Champions League match.   It seems that the away Englanders set off flares, while the locals used lasers to try to distract and/or injure the eyes of some ManU players.   It is not unheard of for "fans" to shine laser pointers into the eyes of players taking free kicks, for example, although everyone responsible for security and safety -Fifa, Eufa, police and clubs - take a dim view of such activities.

Washington state -  The NorthWest Champions League (Washington teams, only please) is still mucking about with their tie breakers.   Sooner or later the first year league will get it all sorted out.   While the NWCL has had its share of detractors (including yours truly) if the tie breaker confusion it has caused is it's only screw up in first year, it does compare favorably with the WSYSA and its annual screwing around with and screwing up with its state cups.

While most of the state was seeing players and coaches grumbling about cold weather and field closures, in the Tri-Cities there was a tournament going on.  Here, players and parents were grumbling about cold weather and select teams forced to play against premier teams in the DoC's private tourney.

In non-soccer news -
Khaddafy in Libya has lost at least half the country and is vowing to stay and fight to the death.  Prederably the death of everyone who does not acknowledge his supremacy, but the death of his entire family if need be.   Countries and the UN are roundly condmening him, and threatening him with International Criminal Court prosecution, freezing his "personal" assets, cutting off arms exports to Libya and all the usual things.
Why should Khaddafy step down?   He has no where to flee to as the normal place of refuge for Deposed Muslim Despots is Saudi Arabia, and he has twice (that is publicly known) had his secret intelligence agency tried to assinate the King of Saudi Arabia.   He is not going to stay in Libya, end up on trial, and then hanged.  Or simply hanged as the first of the crowds break into his palace.   Europe will not take him, and if he went to Venezuela, he risks being snatched by a vengeful America.  Or extradited as soon as his fellow loonie-fanatic Chavez is deposed.

England -  British motorists are now paying more than $9 a gallon for gasoline, it is reported.   Most of that cost is in taxes.   Gasoline at that price in the USA would cause a depression and a revolution.

Speaking of revolts -  This apparently is the Spring of Labor Unrest in the USA as Pro-Union rallies cross the United States and many more States are preparing to take action against Public Sector Unions to combat run away spending on wages, benefits and inane work rules "caused" by unions.  Of course, the Publicly Elected Servants have been agreeing to the Demands of the Public Sector Unions for the last 50 years, and the people have been electing the Publicly Elected Servants.   And various people ahve been warning for years about the lack of funding for pensions, etc.   Just not listened to by the ultimate authority, the voters.    Apparently the voters finally heard in the last elections.

Africa - as usual, nothing much good to report, so we will skip over that continent.......

Stock Market -  Dips Down, Climbs up, Jittery about oil prices.

Something to think about - A woman traveler returning to Arizona from England apparently exposed more than 3,000 workers and passengers in Denver to the measles.  Now imagine if it had been Marburg, Ebola, the Bubonic Plague (which is already present in the USA, from the South), or something that had been tinkered with.  No airport body scan can detect the next bird flu, or some Soviet era bio-weapon that is carried, by accident or design, onto a flight from Sverdlosk, Tehran or Baluchistan and then to Athens, London or New York, infecting people all along the way.   By the time the first fatalities show up,  it could easily spread all the way across the globe.
    Sweet Dreams!

Arsenal falls to Birmingham 1-2 in the Carling Cup Final.   Their new young GK screwed up with their defender of an unpronounceable name, gifting a Birmingham player the "easiest goal I ever scored".   Arsenal have not played well since their victory over Barcelona, and their drought of trophies continues.   Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, was distrought over the loss.    Long term, if Arsenal cannot win anything this year, they run a real risk of losing some of their stars.

Both Freddy Adu and J. Altidore are plying their trade in Turkey.
Steve Cherundoulo is captaining Hanover in teh Bundesliga, and the team won again to maintain its position in fourth.  Run DMB, (aka DaMarcus Beasly, did not suit up this weekend for Hanover.   Next stop, Turkey?    Speaking of Germany, Bayern ahs admitted it's battle is now not for the title but to try to claim second.   Unless they improve, they might see Hanover sneak by them, too.    Ricardo Clark is out with injury,
In the 2nd Division in Der Vaterland, an 18 year old American, Bobbie Wood, made a late cameo appearrance for 1860 Munich.   GK David Yendall played the full match for Duisberg earnign a 0-0 clean sheet.  Luis Robles played the entire match for Karlsruhle,   FC Ingolstadt saw American MLS scoring sensation Edson Buddle play 66 minutes before being pulled as his team lost 0-2.  One does not imagine that Buddle will stay there for more than this season.

GOCCH - played the full match against Rubin Kazan in the Europa League and then played the full match against NEC in the Honordivise (Dutch 1st Division).   Looks like he has recovered his soccer fitness!   Goodness for everyone in Sam's Army!

Sasha Klijesten is on the Anderlecht roster, and sometimes plays for them.  He played 45 minutes against  Westerlo, being yanked at half time.  He did not play against Ajax.

Clint Dempsey ahd a good outing as Fulham tied Man City, this was likely the final nail in the title aspirations of Man City.   The Fulham manager was fired by Man City 14 months ago,  and was involved in a little post game spat with Man City's new manager, who is feeling the heat.

US Youth news -   Today, Sunday, the USA U-17 Boys are playing Canada for the CONCACAF title.  It can be seen on ESPN 3 and on ESPN Desportes.   I guess it is time to upgrade the cable internet packeage.........  Canada has yet to give up a single goal in this tournament.  USA will be missing their GK and their star midfielder to suspension.

In Non-soccer news - Kim Jong Ill, the pint sized dictator of North Korea, has become upset that the world's attention has been on the middle east for the month of February.  Acoordingly, he has threatened to attack South Korea again, in his latest "LOOK AT ME" tantrum.
The new Prime Minister of Tunisia has resigned after more protests.
Protests have spread to Oman, two government buildings were torched there.
China has become even more active to keep any large crowds from forming.
The death toll continues to rise as the mess in Libya gets messier.

Medical Death Panels are once again in the news in England, with their national health system refusing to give advanced cancer patient expensive drugs :
>>>Their requests have been rejected by regional health authorities who were accused of operating covert “blacklists” to restrict dozens of treatments to save money.

An investigation by The Sunday Telegraph has uncovered more than 80 cases in which desperately sick NHS patients have been refused the cancer drugs their doctor sought, in the four months since a £200 million fund was introduced to stop health authorities rationing treatments.

The fund was a key move by the Coalition so that those suffering from cancer would never again be refused drugs on grounds of cost.

Ministers were responding to years of anger over a system which meant patients were unable to secure life-extending drugs because central NHS rationers had decided the treatments were not “cost effective”.

As the Soccer Ball Turns........

In England, Kolo Toure of Manchester City was suspended for a positive drug test.   He may end up being banned for two years.  He has been a key part of Manchester City's build up, and a reliable everyday player on a team of Sputtering superstars.

Sir Alex Ferguson is under investigation by the English FA (soccer authorities) for his ranting out loud about the referee in the ManU-Chelsea game.
Speaking of the Chelsea - Man U game, one of the Chelsea players, Lampard, claims that Chelsea is back in the title race.  Err, Chelsea is ten points back and has played one more game than Man U.  Yep, they still have a shot.   A shot at winning the lottery, that is.  Much more likely.
And speaking of Chelsea, their current coach is reported to be in talks with Roma about coaching there next season.   Apparently he is feeling the heat, the pressure, and the noose that is tightening around his neck.

Also in England, Arsenal is now only a point behind ManU, but keeps having key players injured.  They play ManU in the FA Cup in two weeks, and next Tuesday they play at Barcelona.  Cesc Fabregas might return to play for that one, but Robin van Persie, who had been the hottest striker in the Premier League, is out for 3 weeks.  And now Song, their thug of a defensive midfielder (actually an accomplished player) is likely to be out as well.  And Theo Walcott, who terrorized Barcelona last year in London, is out.

Speaking of Barcelona, they won yesteday 1-0 over 3rd place Valencia at Valencia.  The Valencia keeper was a back up, as their starter was injured.  However, he showed a remarkable sense of positioning.  Any young and coming goalkeepers would be well advised to watch and see how well he was positioned.  Eric Abidal continued his fine run of play for Barcelona and Pique seemed to return to form.   Barcelona were lucky to have a Valencia goal called back for offside.  It looked like the AR blew that call.   Real Madrid obliterated Malaga today, 7-0.  Ronaldo scored a hattrick in the second half before pulling out of the game with an injury.   JoMo, the coach for Real, dismissed the injury as nothing much after the match.   It is interesting that when Ronaldo pulled himself out of the match, he left Real with only ten players on the pitch, as they had used all their substitutions.  Of course, leading by seven goals,  the game was safely won.

back in England, the Wondekid of Tottenham, Gareth Bale, appears out for the match against AC Milan.   Tottenham, whom some are now considering a mature, quality side, hold a 1-0 lead going into the second leg.

World Cup News -  FIFA has decided not to change the allocation of spots to confederations for the next world cup, Brasil 2014.
Women's World Cup News -  2015 will be in Canada.  It was the obvious candidate, since it's only rival was Zimbabwe.  And FIFA execs did not want to have to pack in their own food for the tournament.........

In local soccer news, two sleuths on the WPS, Left Foot and SoccerWonk, have uncovered evidence that the leadership at one of the clubs, one of the biggest, is using a league they created and steered the teams from their club into, for their personal profit.     The conclusions of their detective work are mine, but the evidence so far is pretty ugly.

In other news, International terrorist, thug, dictator and thief par excellence (up to $30 billion by some reports) Moammar Ghaddafy is vowing to fight to the last drop of blood of his supporters.  In search of more supporters he is handing out cash not only to Libyans but also to mercenaries from the south.   The anti-khaddafy forces are calling on the USA to help them.  Reports are over 180,000 people have fled the country and shortages are appearring.  Particularly in Food and Water.  One Libyan, whose country has been suffering from unemployment, lamented that there was no longer any fish, because the fishing boats no longer sailed.  Apparently they were all crewed by Egyptians, who had fled the violence.......
Chavez, the President for Life wannabe and Khaddafy chum from Venezuela, has backed the Libyan Lunatic and claims that this is all just a US plot to invade Libya.

Both Turkey and China have increased their crackdowns on journalists.

In the USA, Wisconsin State Senators who are Democrats are still hiding out at a resort in a neighboring state to prevent the Republican majority in the state government from removing most collective bargaining rights from some state employee unions.  Many states are seeing similar strife over the same issue, but on a lesser scale.

It looks more and more likely that the NFL will have a lockout this year, followed by the NBA.   In the NFL, Michael Vick, fresh from recieving the key to the city of Dallas, has been designated the franchise player by Philadelphia.   See what a felony conviction for torturing and killing dogs followed by a year in prison can do for a man?

In Washington state, people are still celebrating the awarding of the Air Force tanker contract to Boeing.

GM's sales of it's heavily touted electric car, the volt, which was President Obama's public endorsement, had a record sales month in February.  287 vehicles were sold, despite tax breaks given to buyers.  Nissan fared even worse, with sales of less than 100 leaf electric cars in this country.   And folks, this is with surging gas prices.  Heck, one would have expected the cast and crew of 30 Rock to have bought this many vehicles alone!    And why hasn't Al Gore and his posse been out buying them?  Is he saving all his loot to defend against the Portland lawsuit?

Back by popular demand (and the never ending search for negative karma points by my detractors!)  :drinks:
Here is Friday's (sometimes) Daily news -

England Soccer - It turns out that Kolo Toure, one time captain of Manchester City and World Cup Defender, may have taken one of his wife's diet pills which gave him the positive on his drug test.   The minimum time he is expected to be out is the rest of the season, and maybe for up to two years.   Man City did not have any title hopes left, but they were desperately fighting for a Champions League spot for next year.   There is always the fear that their high priced stars will go elsewhere just to be able to play in the top competition in global soccer.

Speaking of the Champions League, Germany has snatched away one of Italy's CL spots, so Germany now has four.

Speaking of Italy, there are more reports that the Italian coach of Chelsea, Ancelotti, is negotiating with Roma to go there next year.   The Russian billionaire who owns Chelsea has a habit of firing coaches.    And Ancelotti has stated that his only hope of keeping his job is to win the Champions League.  Apparently he is a realist, and recognizes that Chelsea have no hope of winning the Premiership.  Despite claims by star midfielder Lampard...

Speaking fo the Champions League, attention is starting to turn to next Tuesday's (or Wednesday, but I think it is Tuesday) match up between Arsenal and Barcelona.   Arsenal has injuries and an unimportant suspension, as I recall.   Barcelona will be missing Pique through suspension and their goalie, Valdes through injury.  Pique has been out injured but may be back to play some of the game, but he will be rusty.   Dani Alves is coming back from injury, he played 90 minutes in the mid-week game.  But the lack of a third central defender has meant that sometimes Abidal (who is playing really well) and sometimes Bisuick, I mean Bisquet, is played back there.   And the coach of Barca was hospitalized yesterday with back pain.  It turns out to be a herniated disc.
Bisquick is one of the softest defensive midfielders I have ever seen.  You breath on him hard, and he collapses and starts crying.  Say what you want to about that thug Marquez, but when the Thug from Mexico was playing, only the opponents were rolling on the ground crying.  (And usually bloody, too).

Speaking of Barcelona, one of their younger forwards, VV, who only occassionally gets to play with the Big Boys, is being courted by a Central European club.  And Bojan Kirkic, once thought of as the next wonderkid from La Maisa, is being looked at Juventus, among others.  When Barca brought in Afaley from Holland, Kirkic dropped to number five in the forward depth chart.  He is only 20, so it is way too early to call him a has-been!

Speaking of forward, our nemisis to the North, the Vancouver Klansmen, I mean Whitecaps (Get it - white hood = white caps?) have their first ever designated player.  Eric Hassil, who comes Zurich FC.   Vancouver already have a defender on their roster who played at Zurich FC.   Seattle's Blaise NFUKO (Or however you spell his name) should have experience with these guys, having played against them in Switzerland.   I would not be surprised to see more soccer players leave Switzerland for North America.  Anyone who has ever been in Zurich can tell you what a neat, orderly, organized and THOUROUGHLY DEPRESSING CITY it is.  Heck, in Switzerland they have an army of old women who sweep the floors of the forests.   In SwissGerman, the word for the ground in the forest is "floor".    It may be a capital crime for a kid to play in the mud over there.......

Speaking of Mud, the big game in England this weekend is Manchester United at Liverpool.  This is a storied rivalry, but that harkens back to the days when Liverpool were a decent side.  Alas, this year they are not.

Speaking of Liverpool,  the former Liverpool man Torres who was bought by Chelsea for $80 million is still trying to score his first goal there.  Hey Chelsea, I will not score goals for you for 1/10th the cost!  A real bargain!

Speaking of not scoring goals, Cristiano "Pretty Boy" Ronaldo is out for 10-15 days with a hamstring injury.   He may or may not be back for the second leg of the Champions League fixture with Lyon.

Back to the MLS, the New England Revolution have signed an 18 year old Nigerian midfielder of no particular note.

In Washignton State Youth Soccer news, Spokane is at it again.   Perhaps inspired by the shenanigans of the directors of the NWCL, perhaps just because it is Spokane, Abbas Faridnia is apparently behing the effort to set up a new soccer club in the Spokane South Hill area, the Spokane Lions, who will play in the USCS.   The Faridinia Family have been the long time powers in the SVJSA FAlcons/SSC Elite soccer club, and were the 6th club to register with USCS, nationwide.    Yes, the Spokane soccer scene has more characters and more twists than a Tolstoy novel.
You basically have two associations, the Valley and the City.  Except that the City goes out to Cheney and up to Mead.  I have no idea if Nine Miles Falls is part of them or even exists in soccer terms anymore.   But a couple of years ago, the Shadow and the owners of the association, which were a multisport quasi non profit youth outfit, had a falling out.  So the Spokane Youth Sports Authority took the rump of the Spokane Youth Soccer Association into US Club, and the Shadow merged with various clubs of good repute in the city (and environes and ended up forming a new association.   Long timers will remember that Washington State Legislators became involved in THAT mess.
Anyway, not everyone in the old SYSA area decided to accept the new situation, and the Scotties soccer club broke off.  (I always had a lot of respect for the Scotties coaches, the ones I saw were class.) Then an outfit up in the North End of town formed an outfit called the Foxes, which have been mainly girls.  It operated an Academy, and tournament teams for U-6 on up.   This year they expanded and fielded a U-10 girls team in USCS, I am told.  The Foxes were somehow affiliated with the River City club of the Valley.   All three of the valley clubs are dual affiliated.  Now this coming year, the Foxes are going to expand their line up of teams, and are creating a new operation, the Pumas.  The Pumas will field boys teams in the USCS leagues.  The Pumas will fall under the USCS operating Spokane Youth Soccer Authority/Association.  No word on if the Foxes will stick with River City or go back to their roots in SYSA.
In the meantime, sober people in the Shadow organization are discounting old promises by the state and giving up on any merger with the valley.    And the Valley, of course, is still exploring additional ways of cooperating with Northern idaho.
And of course, there is still the non-sanctioned, renegade youth league in the valley of about 1,000 kids playing organized soccer.
If this picture resembles a pack of huskies, running a circle biting the tail of the dog ahead of them and yelping when being bit in the tail themselves, then you have a fairly clear picture of the situation.  But at least the Spokanites can claim with pride that none of their club presidents have been caught doi... Ok, they cannot claim that anymore.  But still, Spokane is a nice place to visit.
Anyone who criticizes the author for leaving out details, please be aware that no wants to read the entire 1,200 page book of Spokane Soccer - from 2009 to today.

Womens Soccer -  The USA beat Norway 2-0 to secure advancing to the finals of the Algrave Cup for the 11th consecuative time, while still having Finland to play in the final match of group play.

In global news -  In Bahrain, there was more Sunni-Shiite sectarian violence.
In the Ivory Coast, protesters were shot by the military which supports a president who does recognize the recent elections in which he lost.
In Suadi Arabia, the King has dispatched army forces to help the Ruling Family of Bahrain maintain power.
Protests, shootings and killings in Oman, Yemen, Algeria and elsewhere.
The government in Egypt turned water cannon on protesters there.
Protests in Iran were suppressed again.

Fighting in Libya continues between the anti- and pro- Khaddafy forces.  Apparently netiher the Regular Army, nor  the mercenary African Legion know much more about using the massive stockpiles of weaponry in Libya than the anti-government protesters do.   The Libyan military have long been derided by quality (i.e. US) military professionals as a " Sack of S***".    All the money that Khaddafy has spent on his military purchases reminds me of what my father said about spending lots of money to send my little brother to Georgetown :  "It is like piling up money on the lawn and setting fire to it.".

In the USA, another 24 states are looking to enact their own versions of Arizona's Illegal Immigration Control laws.   That is what happens when the national government has no policy of its own......

Unemployment statistics are out and the government is reporting that unemployment is down to less than 9%.   Some Republicans were quick to point that these statistics do not include the millions upon millions who have given up looking for work.  No word if the Wisconsin Senate Democrats who are not doing their work in that state were counted.

In LA, the nations largest utility district reported that it has actually only spent less than 40% of its stimilus money from 2009.  If memory serves, this is one of the outfits that claimed to have "shovel ready" projects that were just awaiting funding........

At NASA, the recent launch of a global warming satellite failed.   One Astro-wag attribituted it to "Global Wamring".  Also on the space front, the Air Force small robotic shuttle, the X-37B, is getting ready for its second flight.  Actually, this is the second X-37B.  The first one's maiden flight was successful, but since then it has disappearred into an Air Force hanger......
And speaking of Spacey, there are a million Charlie Sheen jokes that I could make, but I will leave that to BigB.

Oil went up to above $105 a barrel today.  Gasoline is above $9 a gallon in the UK and more than $4 a gallon in California.  Aren't we all glad for yet another reason to be thankful that we are not living in California?

Saturday's Early Bird Edition:

Barcelona won, 1-0.    Barcelona has not exactly been firing on all cylinders lately.  Poyal, the team captain and anchor of the defense, is still out.  That means he is unlikely to play in the Tuesday super-match against Arsenal.  Barcelona is already going to be missing their other star central defender, Pique, due to suspension and their #1 GK to injury.
Speaking of Arsenal, they tied 0-0 after being robbed on a poor off side call calling back a goal.  Still, they were playing lowly Sunderland and are trying to challenge ManUre for the Premier League title.   Ever since their surprise victory against Barca in the first league of their Champions League series, Arsenal have been erratic.

The big game of the weekend is the match between ManUre and Liverpool at Liverpool.  That is later on, so no report on that one.

In France, Rennes have taken over first place in Ligue 1.  Sorry about mentioning that, I forgot that NOBODY CARES!!!!!

Perhaps a big unreported story is the fall of Bayern Munich.  Last years Champions League finalist and Bundesliga Champs, with a roster of top notch players, has sunk to 4th place, a whopping 19 points out of first place after losing yet again.   Currently, they are out of Champions League contention for next year.   Look for a coaching change at the end of the season, if not before.   A big roster shakeup will not be a surprise either.   Robben, Ribery, Lahm, Schweinsteiger and Co all are thirsting for Rings, Trophies and runs in the Champions League.   Not playing a team from the Caucaus in the Europa League, where half the fans bring their herds of goats to the match.......

Americans abroad - It was 'Dolo's hanover team that took over bayern's 3rd place slot in the Bundesliga this weekend.
In England, Stuart Holdon is playing well for Bolton, Friedel let three by for Villa (where Bradley once again set unused on the bench), Edu has cemented a place for himself with Rangers (actually in Scotland, but they are lowlanders, so we can lump them in with the English!), and Jones continues to get playing time.   Dempsey's Fulham won again.  Howard was in goal as Everton won 2-1.

In the USA - The Sounders lost to expansion team Portland Timbers, which is sure to instantly ignite a fiery rivalry.

In International News -
A NASA astrobiologist has claimed to have discovered fossilized evidence of microbiological life on a certain type of meteors.  That is proof that life exists - or at least existed - outside of Earth.   More amazingly, the conclusion is that life can - adn does - exist in/on asteroids, comets and such similar celestial bodies.    Teh ramifications are staggering.  This came out in the current issue of the Journal of Cosmology.

Asked to judge the intelligence of the life, one wit claimed "Certainly not self-aware, not bright at all.  Perhaps on the order of the Leadership of the last Congress".   Funny, the computer recreations of the life look a bit like the offspring of Senator Reed and Speaker Pelosi, too...........

Mariah Carey has announced that she regrets singing for Khadday's son.  (and accepting the very LARGE paycheck).   Err, Mariah, what about regrets for "Glitter"?  That could be described as a "Crime against Humanity" all by itself!

In New Zealand, thieves broke INTO a prison and stole the guards big screen TV.

In the US, Charlie Sheen continues to make headlines.     As more lurid newsreports come out of his $2 million a week salary, bevy of pornstars that dance attendance upon him, and his continuous partying, polls show that his popularity among men age 16-60 has increased significantly.   No official word on the rumor that Viagra is planning to make him their next spokesman...........

In Iran, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Yemen, Oman, Bahrain, Algeria, and Libya, there are more protests, shootings, killings, arsons, fighting, and people generally being upset with the status quo.   Crack Libyan Army Units are unable to defeat unorganized protesters who do not know how to use the AK-47s they have taken from other government forces.   That was not intended as a joke, "Crack Libyan Army Units" is how reuters described them, but then Reuters is a European news outfit.   Meanwhile, European Governments are edging toward a more active, military role in unseating Dictator Khaddafy, but finding they lack the military force to do so easily.    Teh English have found that scrapping their aircraft carriers, small though they were, might not have been a good idea.

In other sports, one of the greatest games ever played took place, and it is a good reminder to all of us about the real meaning of athletic competition:

Coach K is good, they say. Roy Williams isn't bad. Rick Pitino can coach, I suppose.

But I'd like to see how those guys would've done with a roster of three valedictorians, six National Merit Scholarship finalists, seven mechanical engineers, three computer scientists, one debate team captain and one chess club president.

That's what peoples Caltech's men's basketball roster. Try taking that job. You'd be working at Home Depot inside three years.

How are you going to sneak a center with Size 17 feet and an IQ to match into a school that ranks on many lists as the hardest to get into in America?

How are you going to coach at a school where your players can major in inorganic chemistry but not PE?

How are you going to win at a place where the students get a minimum of three hours of homework every night?

You couldn't beat an egg with that collection of nerdballs. That's why what Caltech's coach just did is so mind-melting.

Dr. Oliver Eslinger's Beavers, who hadn't won a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game in 26 years, finally did last week, beating Occidental 46-45 in the last game of the season. It wasn't a scoreboard hoax. After going 0-for-310, the rocket scientists finally figured it out.

Alumni were so proud that night that their pocket protectors nearly burst.

Nobody goes to Caltech to storm the court. You go there to storm space. You go there to work on the Mars rover, invent a car that runs on oxygen and get a corner office at Microsoft.

Have you ever seen mathematicians storm the court? They looked like bankers at a rave. They were fanning on high-fives and gently patting people on the back. It was such unfamiliar territory that some of the Caltech players doused the coach in water. (Sorry, wrong sport.)

At one point, Nobel laureate Dr. Robert Grubbs was hugging the school president at center court. If that's not a hoops first, I'll eat my calculator.

Nobody goes to Caltech to storm the court. You go there to storm space. You go there to work on the Mars rover, invent a car that runs on oxygen and get a corner office at Microsoft.

Only two guys on the team have girlfriends. The starting forward has Star Wars posters on his wall. The star of the team got a perfect ACT score. The coach starts each week asking, "OK, how many guys will have to pull all-nighters this week?"

This is a team that can figure out its shooting percentage as it's falling back on defense. It's not pretty. This season it was 37 percent. And the school's futility is not just in basketball. The baseball team has lost 415 straight conference games, and the women's volleyball team has never won one.

"My whole career," said Caltech's leading scorer, Ryan Elmquist (a computer science major), "people would say to me, 'You guys are never going to win a conference game. What's the point?'"

Elmquist won one game in his freshman season, one his sophomore and none his junior, going 0-25 last season. But Eslinger managed to recruit a bunch of freshmen who didn't have just beautiful minds but beautiful bounce passes, too.

Suddenly, Caltech basketball wasn't the equivalent of Auburn astrophysics. The Beavers had won a colossal four nonconference games.

This was their chance. Braun Gym was packed to the ceiling -- 387 people. Senior night. It was now or never for Elmquist. Losing by eight points with four minutes to play, never was looking like a very good bet.

"I felt like we could get this done," Eslinger said. "I just didn't know how."

Math is how.

Caltech Athletics
Caltech celebrated its first SCIAC win over Occidental College since beating La Verne 26 years ago."It was simple statistical probability," said freshman Todd Cramer (computer science) of Philadelphia. "After 310 games and getting so close so many times, you're bound to win one game, right?"

Elmquist went out and proved the theory. He scored the game's last seven points, including the winning free throw. What do you know? Spheres do fit in cylinders.

Caltech went absolutely irrational. Suddenly, the Beavers were no longer a null set. You'd have thought that somebody on campus had just solved the Hodge conjecture.

"I won two league championships in high school," Cramer said. "And it was nothing like this."

In a 900-student school that has had 31 Nobel winners -- five of them still on the faculty -- basketball was suddenly making national news. No wonder. None of these guys were even born the last time Caltech had won a conference game.

Elmquist went on the "CBS Evening News" with Katie Couric. Cramer got an e-mail from one of his professors, who celebrated the historic win with an unprecedented gift -- a 24-hour extension on his homework.

What's next? Well, Elmquist will program software for Google. A lot of the guys will end up launching rockets for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory next door to the school. One, guard Mason Freedman, plans to be an astronaut.

As for basketball, Caltech hasn't had a winning season since 1954, a record for heartache eclipsed only by the Detroit Lions. They're probably not ready for that any time soon, but that's their goal.

"When I tell people our goal is to win the conference, they go, 'Oh, that's cute!'" Cramer said. "But, honestly, we're not that far away."

These are space nerds. They know far away.

In the meantime, Caltech is living the dream. The other day, Eslinger got to coach the Washington Generals against the Harlem Globetrotters.

Must've been a comfort to him. The Generals once lost 2,495 games in a row.

For the 4th time, I wrote out the stories in England, the impact of Manchester United's destruction at the hands of Liverpool,  Americans in Europe (Gooch, Dolo, Howard, Edu and Dempsey doing good), poked fun at the French league, had a full and indepth article on the Barca-Arsenal game, talked about two important youth soccer events going on, made fun of Basrcalona's Sergio Bisquet, then talked about the two scandals in England, the mercenaries that Libya is using, the story behind the 17 month old being put in the overhead storage pin, the story about the colombian soccer player kicking a mascot to death on the field, and a few other things - and the computer crashed on me again.

I even made a joke about Freddy Adu's next trade being for 3 goats and him heading to a 3rd division Turkmenistan team......

So the heck with it.  Enjoy the game tomorrow.

Busquets and Abidal in the middle at the back for Barca and RVP reportedly likely to play for the gunners - maybe Arsenal do have a chance to get through?

Guess they did have a chance to get through - unfortunately it fell in the last 5 minutes to the only Arsenal player with two left feet!

Shame the ref spoiled what looked like it was setting up for a really exciting finish with a poor decision on the red card.

Decided to make a new thread for this game.   And van Persie could have been sent off earlier.  Further, twice barca were flagged for offsides later, and they had no trouble hearing the whistle and stopping.

It seems like all of European soccer stopped today as the Champions League recommenced.  Unfortunately, AS Roma was one of those teams that stopped, and Shaktair beat them 3-0.  Roma even missed on a PK!
Arsenal did no better, falling 3-1.   Arsenal had no shots in the entire game, nada, zip, nothing.   Their goal - which tied the match - came from a Sergio Bisquets own goal.    There is a different thread to discuss this match, in all its scintillating detail.

In other soccer news -  The Colombian Player who kicked the injured mascot - an owl - of his opponents and killed it a few days ago may face league charges.  He is already gettting death threats.  Michael Vick has publicly denied being associated with this guy....

New Zealand has called up 4 MLS players for their next national team game.

Tomorrow's most exciting clash will be between Tottenham Hotspurs and AC Milan.  Spurs shocked everyone by winning the first leg, 1-0, at Milan.    Tottenham is also in the news for a report that their manager, Harry "Rednose" Redknapp has decided to sell all three of his forwards and to bring in some new talent up top in the summer.  Young Phenom Gareth Barry is expected to be back from injury.

In Turkey, Freddy Adu scored for his new second division side, to win their weeekend game 1-0.  Dempsey, Howard, Bocanegra, Cherundolo, Edu and Holden continue to do well in Europe, while DaMarcus Beasley cannot seem to realize that his European career is over.

In germany, Louis Van Gaal, the coach for faltering Bayern Munich, was told he is not going to be fired this week.  But he will be let go at the end of the season.   That is an interesting strategy by management.  "You're fired, but we cannot find anyone to replace you right now, so hang onto the end of May, will ya?"

In youth soccer news, the fabled Coast Soccer League is being gutted by 20 of the top clubs leaving to form the California Developmental League, (or some such name).     The leadership of the CSL is still in denial, while the youth directors for LA Galaxy and Chivas USA are very happy.

In Washington state, there is still no comment from the leadership of WPFC on how much money is being raked off from the NorthWest Champions League, or where the money is going.  And more drama will be coming soon among associations inside the WSYSA as some more clubs leave - perhaps not willingly - to be 100% USCS.

More USA National team news -
The women are through to the finals of the Algrave cup with another win, where they will face Iceland.   ICELAND?   IS THAT A TYPO?

The Gold Cup schedule was announced, and the USA is in Group C.  So are Panama, Canada and Guadeloupe.    A total of 12 teams in group play with 8 advancing.  Tournament is in June, finals will be at the Rose Bowl.     The USA hates playing Mexico in the Rose Bowl, players describe it as "just like being in Mexico".
It will run June 5 to June 25.  Hopefully the USA brings more than a B team this time around.

In international, non-soccer news -
Rebels claim to have shot down a Libyan Air Force fighter.  One of the two pilots was Syrian, according to documents found on the bodies.  This buttresses earlier claims that Syrian pilots and aircraft have been hired to Khaddafy to assist him in putting down the revolt.

English newspapers are raking the UK government over the coals after a team of commandoes - reportedly from the Special Boat Service, akin to our SEALs - was captured along with an English Spy by a group of rebels in Libya.  Apparently they were there to meet up with a member of the Rebel Leadership, they just ran into the wrong group of rebels and ended up in jail....

Also in England, Prince Andrew is being publicly run through the wringer because of a personal and business relationship to a pedophile.   Apparently this chap had a thing for teenage hookers, like the Italian Prime Minister.  Now there are reports of President Clinton being part of this group at times, although all sources to date say that he never fooled around with any of the girls, he just pardoned one of the group of buddies for cheating on his taxes.....Even Fergie, the Duchess of York, (and maven of nutrisystems) has been drawn into it, with revelations that the accused pedophile had been paying some of her bills....

Speaking of government scandals, Joques Chirac, former President of France, has had his 20 years come up.   Back before he left office, he had the French Parliment pass a law that said he could not be prosecuted for crimes for two decades after he left office.   Times up, and he is facing trial on a variety of corruption charges.   His lawyers are trying to use an Alzheimer's Defense.

In the USA, more than 1,000 local governments, unions and businesses have been granted waivers from Obamacare.
And this month, the monthly deficit was 30% greater than the total annual deficit of 4 years ago.  (For those of you who just moved up from California, that was 2007).
Another new statistic from our government today - a bit more than 1/3 of the all the wages recieved in the total USA come from unemployment, social security and other government payouts.   Not sure if that includes retirees pensions or not.  Regardless, every worker is now, dollarwise, supporting himself, his family if any, and half of someone else via the government.  Obviously not a sustainable activity.

The spcae shuttle discovery has been cleared for its final landing.   After this NASA will be buying rides on Russian rockets to get American astronauts into orbit and the space station that the USA mainly paid for.

Apparently conservative gotcha "journalist", James O'Keefe, has struck again. (Of Acorn-sting fame).   And the President of NPR has resigned......

Warren Buffet, the Oracle of Omaha, and one of the world's 3 richest men, is bullish on the world economy.  His company just ordered 120 top of the line Bombardier business jets.   A version of these planes is used by Horizon as commuter planes, I believe.

In California, a large school over a million large sardines got trapped in a marina and ran out of oxygen.  Result - a massive die off and a giant, smelly problem.

And today's jokes -

I’ve often wanted to drown my troubles, but I can’t get my wife to go swimming.

and the flipside -

Why do female black widow spiders kill the male after mating?
To stop the snoring before it starts.

More Champions League today -

Tottenham are through to the round of 8, as are Shalke 04.   They join Barcelona and Shaktair.   Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Man United are expected to join them next week.   Also the winner of the Bayern-Inter series.
So we are looking at 3 English, 2 Spanish, 1 Ukrainian, 1 German and either another German or an Italian club in the round of 8.  So the odds are pretty good that Barcelona will face another English club.     Tottenham, Shaktair, and Schalke have to be considered the big underdogs in the next round.  But it is all about the match ups!

Todays match in London ended scoreless while Schalke beat Valencia 3-1.

Mia Hamm was in the Nou Camp for yesterday's Barcalona vs ArseNIL match and gushed praise on FC Barcelona while talking about Barcelona's growing fanbase in the USA.  Barcelona has committed to a US tour this summer.   RUMOR has it that the Sounders will be playing "a top Spanish side" in their single exhibition match this year.  SounderFan, when will we know for sure?

Arsenil's fullback Sagna said that Arsenil can learn alot from the game against Barcelona and carry that on into their quest for Silver domestically.
Arsenal's coach and their winger Samir Nasri are both facing EUFA investigations for conduct and comments after the match.   They may join Sir Alex in the "sin bin".

In today's EPL action, Everton adn Birmingham tied 1-1, with Tim Howard in goal.

In the MLS, J. Jewsbury of Kansas City was traded to Portland for allocation money.   KC then signed three more players to their roster.
While on the subject of KC, LIVESTRONG, a non-profit charity foundation, has become the sponsor of the new KC soccer stadium.

In international news -
More of the same.
Libyan pro-Khaddafy sources claim that his forces have advanced and captured a town 30 miles to the West of the capital, Tripoli.   Libyan (and Syrian?) planes have bombed more places that are rebel held.   Europe talks about a no fly zone, and then discovers it lacks the ready resources to implement it.

NASA is repudiating claims by one of its scientists that fozzilized evidence of extra-terrestial life has been discovered.

The President of NPR was fired today, more damage control in the wake of the latest O'Keefe video.

Allied Forces in Afghanistan have captured a major shipment of Iranian supplied rockets from the Taliban.  Iran of course denies that they supplied the rockets who markings showed they came from the Iranian Revolutionary guard.

And Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House and wannabe GOP Presidential candidate today blamed his :love of country" for making marital mistakes in the past.  He was announcing also where he would announce that he is running for president, "if" he decides to run.  If being aptriotic is a good excuse for having an affair, then I guess my wife owes me a freebee!

In youth soccer news, the fabled Coast Soccer League is being gutted by 20 of the top clubs leaving to form the California Developmental League, (or some such name).     The leadership of the CSL is still in denial, while the youth directors for LA Galaxy and Chivas USA are very happy.

The CSL has long had a rule that none of a club’s teams can play in the league unless the highest team does. The Academy and ECNL teams have other obligations they consider more important than league play. These clubs negotiated with the CSL to lessen the burden, but could not come to an agreement . Therefore the ECNL clubs started their own league and quickly got a dozen non-ECNL clubs to join in. (BTW, in both the CSL and the new league, double-counting league games would be the practice for these top teams)

The ink is not dry yet. Of note is that both CalSouth (USYS) and USClub appear to be competing to sanction the new league. And CSL may agree to a compromise. The process is a little ugly but I have to admire a system where the actual clubs and teams who play the games are free to act in the best interests of players/parents. That's the fundamental difference from WYS - where there is a league and club monopoly established from above and somebody assigns you to your one "choice" in the system.

Today is the start up of the knock out stages of the Champions League.     The headline match have overachieving Tottenham Hotspurs of England playing AC Milan.  Tottenham is the decided underdog.    Another interesting match today is in the second tier Europa League, where Manchester City - which has been outspending even Chelsea in England on players - goes to Greece to play Aris.   Aris had a couple of American forwards last year, one of the Eddie's and the Fredy.  Both were shipped out.   The match was evenly played, with few shots on goal by either team.  Ended up as a 0-0 scoreline.

Can't call Spurs overachievers anymore. Couple of years back - yes. But now - 4th in premiership last year, currently 4th again and if they win their game in hand would be 3rd above Man C and Chelsea. Won their CL group finishing above the current European and World Club Champions. And all this with major players injured for long periods this season showing they have a deep squad. If you watched the game today you'll have seen that they were the better side for long periods and deserved the win.

Well, it looks like Midfield General was right, and he is picking up supporters

The time for underestimating Tottenham is over

The esteem in which Spurs are held as a result of their interventions in this season's Champions League belies their talent quota and European experience. Manager Harry Redknapp is quick to point out that this campaign represents their first jaunt into the tournament and their opening few matches, in qualification and in the group stages, paid testament to that.

But Spurs have been grossly misjudged in the competition. In Heurelho Gomes, William Gallas, Rafael van der Vaart and Peter Crouch, they have experienced Champions League campaigners; semi-finalists and finalists. Redknapp has at his disposal players who know how to win matches on Europe's grandest stage. He also has adept newcomers, like Luka Modric, and most fearsomely of all, pace.

Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon are possessed of searing speed and are capable of passing any full-back on their day. It is no surprise that Tottenham have got this far. It is a surprise that people thought they could not. Spurs made Milan look less than ordinary in San Siro and won by the odd goal, and their follow-up in the second leg showed maturity and concentration. Two attributes not always associated with Harry's team.

Spurs have achieved two consecutive clean sheets and a place in the last eight. They displayed their propensity for entertainment in the group stages and their adroitness and guile in the knockouts. It is a good combination and one which needs to be taken seriously by the other seven sides in the draw.

I think they have a great chance to progress even further as long as they don't draw Barca or ManUre in the next round.  Obviously Barca are at another level, and for some reason Man U seen to have their number even with the recent Spurs success.

Now if they could get to the final that would be overachieving, but certainly welcome to those of us who are long suffering Spurs fans. Last time they made it as far as the semi final of the European Cup was back in the early sixties!

What makes it even better is that Arsenal have already been dispatched - thanks Barca  :drinks:

If, as rumored, they get rid of their current forwards and bring in some big name players up top they could be contending for every trophy possible next year.  I just can't see Crouch, Defoe, and Pavlyuchenko getting it done in all competitions.

Even with 70 million pounds, who would they bring in up top?   They might make a move for Robben, Ribery or Snjeider, all world class players who may be available, but those are midfielders.   Abedayor?  He is likely to be available.   Benzema?  possible.    The old big name Italians?  Too old to make it in the Premiership.   Gomes from Bayern?  Might be available.  Giuseppe Rossi?  He has spurned offers from clubs at least equally attractive, and would likely prefer Italy to England if he did move.

Dirk Kuyt?  I like Kuyt, but do not see him as the answer to the problems on top for Hotspur.  Bojan Kirckc?  I wager he would be a flop in England rather than a breakout.  Oh well, they can always go shopping in Brasil or Holland....

Okay, here is the latest installment of the not so daily news -

Champions League - Inter Milan overcame a 0-1 home defeat and trailing 1-2 at Munich to advance in an unlikely 3-2 victory.   This will have other ramifications upon Bayern Munich.
Manchester United - known as the "Evil Empire" by its detractors - lead 2-0 before an own goal made it an uncomfortable last ten minutes before advancing to the next round.
Tomorrow, Real Madrid play Lyon after a tie in their away game.   And Chelsea, who beat minnows Kopenhagen 2-0 away, are at home and expected to comfortably dispatch the Danes.

So if Real Madrid do advance, then the final eight will be Tottenham, ManU, Chelsea, Real Mudred, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Shaktar Donetsk, and Shalke 04, the sole German representative.   Remember, UEFA recently took one of the Italian leagues slots into the Champions League and gave it to the Germans.

I believe the draw for the next round is random, meaning that teams from the same country can play each other (which is avoided in the round of 4).   Shalke, Tottenham and Shaktar are regarded as the weakest teams advancing, while Inter probably rounds out the last four.   Although some might replace them with Chelsea or Real Madrid....
Man U and Barcelona are clearly the teams that no one would like to face right now...

Other news in Europe -
Man U beat Arsenal 2-0 in the FA Cup.    In not so good news for the USA, Javiar Hernandez has returned to health and form for Man U, scoring both their goals.  Since he is on the Mexico national team, this is bad news for US.
Bolton beat Carling Cup winners Birmingham to advance to the next round.  USA's Stuart Holden had another strong perfromance.
Man City beat lowly Reading and Stoke beat relegation bound West Ham United (American Jonathon Spector sat on the bench for West Ham)
Man U will play Man City in the round of 4, while Bolton will face Stoke.

This was Arsenal's 3rd competition ending defeat in the last 15 days, and they have gone from looking at a Quadruple to simply playing for the Premiership title.  They have a game in hand, and are 3 points back from ManU in the Premiership.  But many pundits are writing them off, stating that Arsenal are not strong enough mentally to come back from these crushing defeats.   Further, they lost another player, a starting defender, to a season ending injuring in the latest FA cup game.  They are looking to sign retired goalkeeper Jens "Mad Jens" Lehman from retirement as an emergency backup to the backup they now have starting after losing 3 senior team goalkeepers to injuriy this season.    The kicker?  Lehman and current starter Almunia hate each other and in the past have been critical of each other in the press.  Speaking of the press, cries are growing louder that Arsene Wenger's approach to soccer - skillful possession vs normal English style - is a failure, since Arsenal has not won a trophy in 7 years.

Another team in trouble is Bayern Munich.   Before todays second half defeat, the club had announced that current coach Van Gaal would leave at the end of the season.  Now that they have lost at home in the CL, when they were favored, he might be leaving even earlier.   Bayern are now 4th in the Bundesliga (3rd place in USA's Cherendulo's Hannover) and just out of CL qualifying for next year.    Bayern has a bevy of stars - Robben, Gomes, Riberry, Lahm, Schweinsteiger - that may not stick around to break in a new coach (again) and not play in the Champions League.    Real Madrid, Chelsea and Man City are always buyers, Tottenham will be on a spending spree according to reports, and Juventus has identified the need for 4 new world class players.   And let's fave it, Milan and Rome are far nicer to live in than Munich - brrr!

Speaking of trouble, Barcelona is awaiting updates from the doctors on Lionel Messi's knee, which he did hurt in Sunday's tie with Sevilla.   Sevilla is starting to pull things together after an awful first half, and played well in the second half to tie Barcelona.    Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola, when asked about Messi's wonderful (but wrongly) disallowed freekick goal in the first half and the non-call on Bujan's being tripped in the box while he had the ball , stated that Referees had a very difficult job, and that Barcelona coaches did not comment on the officiating.    Then yesterday a Barcelona radio station claimed that Barcelona players, staff and doctors were involved in a scheme to dope the players.   Barcelona denied this.  Real Madried denied having any hand in this report.   Barcelona accepted that there is no evidence that Real Madrid had anything to do with this report.  Barcelona is consulting with their lawyers over suing the radio station.

In MLS news, the Sounders tonight lost to the dreaded LA Galaxy, 1-0.  Like last year, there was a cold rain for opening day.  A much bigger surprise than the loss was the Sounders getting rid of Blaise Nfulo just before game time.    While Blaise was not overly impressive in his short stint with the team last year, the alternatives readily available at forward cannot be said to be superior - as was shown in tonight's shutout against shorthanded LA.   Questions not only will be asked, but are already being raised about the Sounders coaching since this dismissal comes after the Ljunberg saga.

In local youth soccer news three things are catching attention -
State Cup time is upon us all, and with it questions about the latest changes - monkeying around - with the cups that the WSYSA has done, who it benefits, why it was done, and what role the often derided CAP scores play or do not play in seedings and placement.
In Spokane, it is becoming more likely that the area soccer scene is heading towards another era of chaos, club creation, and internicine warfare between soccer personalities, clubs, associations and teams.    Buy some popcorn to watch the fun.  And be sure to get a scorecard, because you cannot keep track of all the players without one.
In the Tri-Cities, the association is trying to clamp down on activities it finds objectionable by it's new, upstart club, ASE.   Three Rivers, long the only competitive club within the association and the designated RCL club (after once being kicked out of the PDL) is being quiet and thankful.  Thankful because for once it is not being publicly derided for its screw ups.   QUiet so it does not once again commit such a screw up.  And Twice Thankful because ASE has been making inroads into the player base that 3Rivers used to own.  ASE started with a plan to field 4 teams in its first year, and ended up with 11 such was the demand for an alternative to 3Rivers.   It came close to 15, but refused to lower its standards for team creation.   One entire select team decided to transfer out of 3Rivers and into ASE after 3Rivers tried to replace its current and capable coach with someone who was more favored by the 3Rivers DoC.  (Of course, such a thing as a team or even a group of players would no longer be allowed under the new rules by the State).
ASE's current actions in response to the inital actions and comments by the TCYSA Board seem as if ASE is already determined to be kicked out or that it will be kicked out.  The outcome, unless a sudden onset of reasonableness happens, will be a USCS vs WSYSA battle inside the Tri-Cities.  Some think that the biggest losers will be the kids.
And since this is youth soccer politics, no one thinks that there will be any sudden attack of reasonableness.
In Kitsap, one club is gone from the association and another is on the verge of leaving.   The reason behind it?  The association's attempt to shore up a WestSound RCL club that is in difficulty.

And in other Americans playing soccer abroad news -   Freddy Adu, playing in the Turkish Second Division for his 5th or 15th team in the last 3 years, scored a wondergoal to power his team to victory 1-0.    And Michale Bradley once again sat on the bench for his new club, hapless Aston Villa, while they lost once again.   And Gooch once again played all 90 minutes in another FC Twente victory for the Dutch 1st Division leaders.   No word on why he did not play in their Europa Cup midweek victory.

While the USA eschews playing the Copa America, Japan has accepted an invitation to play in the South American Cup.  The USA famously beat Argentina down there 3-0 back in 1995, helping to earn Steve Sampson the head coaching job of Team USA.

In other international news -

Japan today announced that a FOURTH nuclear reactor is having problems as the pool (yes, of water) that housed nuclear fuel rods caught on fire.  Yes, the pool caught on fire according to Japanese government reports.   Three other reactors have had hydrogen explosions and radiation releases.  It is becoming difficult to determine which reactors are the ones that releasing the (currently) low levels of radiation into the atmosphere.   The Japanese government announced today that radiation levels had gorwn to be so big and dangerous that they were pulling all their personal off of attempts to pour water and boron into the reactor to cool it and to stop a (potential?) meltdown.  It is unclear if they meant just one reactor or all three that are in the most serious danger.  It is also unclear if the workers have since returned.  Germany, the USA, and IAEA are all apparently flying in experts to help deal with the situation.  And sources in Japan have said that the government is going to call in the US military to help.   In a local, Washington state note, it may be that the fuel rods and fuel rod assemblies (bundles) for one of the reactors (pure uranium, not the two? that are using uranium-plutonium mix) were prepared and made in Washington state, at the old Seimens (once GE) now Areva nuclear fuel plant at Hanford.

In the middle east, Troops from other countries have begun arriving to help the government maintain control during more protests.   Government forces have stifled the protests in Syria and Iran.   In Yemen, troops are reported to have fired on protestors.  In Egypt, protests continue, and crowds gathered to jeer and condemn the smaller womens rights crowd that gathered to protest the beating and rape by a crowd of an American journalist.   Israel intercepted and captured an Iranian flagged ship from Syria that was loaded with tons of rockets and munitions heading for the Hamas terrorists who control Gaza.    Turkey had no comment.   Israel also mourned the death of a father, mother and 3 children who killed in their sleep in a knife attack by a Palestinian terrorist.

In Libya, the forces of Khaddafy continue to advance against the rebels.   France has called for airstrikes against Khadaffy's concentrations of power.  The Arab League has called for a no fly zone over Libya.   The Italian government, knowing of the massive Libyan government investments in the Italian economy, has said that it is against any such moves.  The US Government has stated that it is awaiting a "global consensus" before doing anything.   Russia, with a UN veto,  has said that it is against any action against its old ally and major arms purchasor, Moammar Khaddafy.  Libyan anti-Khaddafy forces have presented the paperwork of a Syrian pilot shot down and killed by rebel forces, to substantiate reports that Khaddafy has brought in Syrian forces to supplement his Libyan loyalists and Pan African Legion.
In Europe, the joke about "It is safer to be an enemy of America than an ally of America" is going around.

In the USA, Michele Bachmann, a favorite of the Tea Party and a potential candidate for President in 2012 had her carefully prepared speech disrupted by left wing protestors in New Hampshire.

The war against public sector unions and against government spending continues on many different venues.  Several states are continueing this fight, and most recently a state proposed that the Governor be able to take control of a city government and appoint a "CZAR" to deal with it, with extroardinary powers, when it was facing insolvency and bancruptcy.   Some Democrats, forgetting the GM and Chrysler government takeovers, decried this idea as unconstitutional, unprecedented, unAmerican, and designed to stop the union contracts with the municipal governments in question.   Off camera, some conservatives just grinned at these charges.

Someone claimed that George Soros, multi-billionaire currency speculator and manipulator, who has backed Obama, MoveOn.Org and other such causes to the tune of more than $100 million (according to some reports, he admits about half that), has said that the current economic, domestic political, finnancial, and global political situation are about what he expected from this presidency.   George Soros is credited with breaking the Bank of England and making more than a billion pounds in doing so.

CNN has reported that the cost of a human slave in the modern world has fallen to a low of $90 per head.  Two hundred years ago, the cost was $40,000 (adjusted for inflation).  The current estimates of slavery in the world put the numbers at 12 million to 30 million.   No, marriage does not count.

It looks likely that both the NBA and the NFL will be on strike this fall.

On the lighter side -

In today's news -

Real Madrid breeze by Lyon 3-0 to advance 4-1 on aggregate.   Lyon was down by only a single goal with about 20 minutes to go, but when they were trying to press forward for the equalizer, Benzema and Di Maria struck to finish them off.

In a scoreless draw in London, Chelsea advanced over Kopenhagen.   So the final 8 teams in the Champions League are set.  Ancelloti, the Chelsea coach, dropped record signing Torres from the starting roster for this game.  A strange decision given that Chelsea really did not need to score, this would have given Torres more time to work the bugs out.

Latest Barcelona news - Eric Abidal, the French defender who has been superb for the team this year, is out.  He is having surgery this week - it has already been brought forward - to remove a tumor on his liver.

In England, the FA has fined Sir Alex Ferguson 30,000 pounds and suspended him for 5 matches for his rant about a referee.  Another coach in the Premiership, Avram Grant, has been charged with misconduct by the FA.
Also in England, former national team captain John Terry is back in as team captain, at least temporarily.   Terry lost the captain's armband after famousely cheating on his wife with the girlfriend of a friend and teammate.

In Germany, Schalke has fired their coach, despite their advancing to the final 8 of the Champions League.  They have been in poor form domestically.

MLS - Vancouver have signed 3 more young players, including a teenager who is "home grown".
The Sounders are staying mum about the reasons why they dumped Blaise Nfulo.   Speculation is already starting that he may end up in Vancouver or even Toronto, as his wife is Canadian.

In Youth soccer, embattled West Sound has "not renewed" the contract of their DoC.  In the Tri-Cities, a conflict between the association and a local club is brewing up with one of the issues being the role that USCS operations can play within the club.

In International news, the leaders of the rebels in Libya are pleading for international help as Quaddafy's reinforced forces are driving toward more victories.  The matter seems likely to go to the UN, where the Russians have already announced they are against action against their old client, Quaddafy.

In japan, little hard information is coming out about the nuclear troubles there, except that there are now issues at 4 plants, and reinforcements are being called in.  The death toll from the tsunami is now estimated at between 10,000 and 18,000.

In New Jersey, 3 High School students are facing suspension, denial of graduation ceremonies, and criminal charges because they let loose 3 live chickens in their High School as  a senior prank.  Apparently the school administration failed all their courses in "Sense of Humor".

An early edition today, folks -

Europa Cup competition saw 16 teams reduced to 8 as all 3 remaining UK clubs crashed out.
Probably the biggest story is that ManCity won 1-0, but that was not enough to erase a first game 2 goal loss.  They can thank Wild Child Bolatelli who decided to emulate teammate De Jong (remember him in the WC final?) with a karate kick of his own to an opponent.  This time the ref gave out a straight red card.  Bolatelli was unhappy with the decision.
Rangers (with Edu starting) went out 0-1 to PSV in Scotland.
Liverpool failed to score (yet again) and went out 0-0.
Villareal beat Leverkuisen to advance, as did Porto over CSKA Moscow.
Benfica over PSG, and Spartak Moscow demolished poor Ajax again.
Gooch played for FC Twente as they lost by two but still advanced.

Tomorrow is the Champions League draw for the final eight.  Cristiano Ronaldo has publicly stated that he would rather play against ManU than Barcelona next.
Speaking of Barcelona, they summoned by UEFA for a surprise drug test yesterday.  This comes right on the heels of a Barcelona radion station claiming that the entire team, staff and medical staff were involved in a doping scandal.   Included in the test were Pique, Puyol, Messi and both goalkeepers among others.  Barcelona has not released any statement about the knock on the knee that Messi took in his last game, against Sevilla.

Mad Jens Lehman has indeed come out of retirement to become the new backup keeper at Arsenal.   Everyone knows that keepers are a peculiar lot, but some of his antics have taken it to a different level, and not always in a good way.

The USA has announced its roster for the upcoming friendlies against Paraguay and Argentina.  Surprises include the omission of Jones, who is now playing in the UK, and Brad Guzan, who is playing  nowadays for a lower division team instead of sitting on the bench behind Howard in the Premier League.  Speculation is building about how long Michael Bradley will keep his starting spot since he is not playing much since his move to woeful Aston Villa.

A player from Washington state, now at UCLA, has been called up to the USMNT U-20 roster.  Kelyn Rowe is one of two Bruins and only 5 college players on the roster.

Local soccer news - Not much, everyone is still reeling with the disapointment in how the Sounders played  on Tuesday.

Other news -
Panic buying of Iodine and Potassium has hit some areas, expect to see poisoning cases be reported from hospitals.  This is cfoc course, in response to the continueing repotrs of bad news from teh FOUR Japanese nuclear reactors that are in trouble.

Khaddafy vows to attack Benghazi tonight and to "show no mercy" to continue his recent rout of the rebels.  The world has decided to take some form of action.  They will debate the issue in the UN.  (YAWN)  UPDATE - The UN has just approved a NO FLY ZONE and all neccessary measures to protect civiliians.  Looks like the US Navy has 1 aircraft carrier in position to implement this.  Better late than never?   Two weeks ago this would have meant the end of Khaddafy, now it may mean a long civil war.

More cracking down in the Arab world on protesters, as troops cleared out the main square in Bahrain.   The majority shiites ae continueing their resistance to the government in various ways.

In Italy, the Italian government, fresh from saying that it would support no action against Libyan Dictator Moamar Quaddafy, has asked other countries fo help in dealing with the thousands of Libyan refugees streaming to Italy.

In other Italian news, the Italian PM has declared that he is "too old to have sex with 33 young women".  The price of viagra in Italy went up 30% overnight.   Burlesconi, as you will recall, is facing criminal charges for using underage prostitutes.  He calls the girls in question "good friends".

Traces of radiation from Japan are expected to hit the US West Coast as early as tomorrow.  The US Surgeon General, on the East Coast, says that there is no cause for alarm and that she will not be going to California this spring on vacation.

Royal Caribean Cruise Lines has unveiled a new package holiday on its cruise ships.  They call it the Director of Coaching Package.   You get all you can drink for free while on board.

In todays soccer news -
Manchester United opened up a 5 point lead after a very goal by Berbetov lead them to victory over Bolton.   More importantly, USA's Stuart Holden left the game and went to the hospital, bleeding in the leg from a rash two footed challenge by a Man U player (who was red carded).   No further news on his condition, but it was initially thought to be gash rather than something more serious.
Arsenal, in second place in the EPL, was down by two late to West Brom, but came back to score two late goals to tie the match.  They still have a game in hand over Man U but have now fallen 5 points back.    And WBA is not as good as Bolton, for those who are comparing things.

Tottenham tied West Ham (always a favorite of the Emeral City FC folks) 0-0.  West Ham looks destined for relegation.  Not a display from Tottenham to instill confidence looking ahead....

Villa sat Michael Bradley on the bench once again, and lost once again.

In Germany, both 3rd place Hannover (Cherundolo) and 4th place Bayern won again.

In Spain, both Barcelona and Real Madrid won 2-1.    The only particular note was that Messi was healthy and played the entire game, so he should be able to play for Argentina vs USA at the end of the month.

IN France, well, who cares.......

In the MLS, the Sounders were once again shut out 1-0.   So far, it looks like the team MVP is going to be Kasey Keller.   Sigi Schmid persisted with playing OBrien White up top, and White showed why Toronto FC got rid of him after last season.  (And yes, Toronto looks to be once again the worst team in the MLS.)   Seattle had a total of six shots (3 on goal) and KK saved an 8th minute PK by Henry of the Red Bulls.   The goal was scored by the 18 year old Arguledo (sp?) of New York, who is on the USA MNT roster for the upcoming game.  He outran John Kennedy Hurtado and bounced off of Leo Gonzalez before making a cracker of a shot to the far post.   Seattle's Friberg did score, but it was called back because the Red Bull thug Marquez was badly positioned (llok at how he had his feet placed on the play) and fell on his ass.   So far, in both games this season,       Fri(e)berg is the Sounder that has come closest to scoring.   Seattle did once again put in Neagle late, and Neagle skied a shot from in close.

Vancouver palyerd their first game in MLS, and THEIR SWISS FORWARD scored two goals.  The Whitecaps ended up winning 4-2 against the already designated worst team in the MLS, Toronto.    Portland went down 3-0 before scoring (deflection on a free kick) in the second half to end up losing 3-1 to Colorado.    Charlie Davies scored once from the spot and once from play to lead DC United to a victory.   He was the hotshot young forward before his automobile accident a year and a half ago.

Chad Johnson, aka ochocinco, of the NFL is trying out with the Sporting Kansas City team.  He is a great athlete, but he last played soccer 15 years ago.

In local youth soccer news, the District Six Girls tournament is underway this weekend.  I would comment on it, but DD has been out for a month with a sprained ankle, and so I did not see any of it today.  Perhaps tomorrow.

In other news -  The USA and Britain struck Libyan air defense facilities today wtih cruise missile strikes.  The 112 missiles fired have a replacement price of approximately a quarter of a billion dollars.  French fighters flew over Eastern Libya, and at least one fired on a Khaddafy side armored fighting vehicle.  The USA and the rest of the world left the intervention late enough for Khaddafy's forces to rally to and reoccuppy much of Libya, including sending tanks into Benghazi.   British fighters also launched long range cruise missiles in the attacks.
As is typical in the third world, the cruise missile strikes were met with a belated mass firing of explosive shells and other anti-aircraft artillery into the air.  Folks, shooting tons of high explosives into the air is not always a good idea.  It does come down somewhere........
In the Iraq war there were numerous cases of Iraqi anti-aircraft shells and surface to air missiles landing back in the towns that they were supposedly defending, causing lots of collatoral damage.

Qatar and the UAE have joined the UK, the USA, France, Canada and Norway in dispatching or promising forces to participate in actions against the Khaddafy regime.  Reportedly Poland, the Netherlands and Denmark are making plans to join in the coalition.
In Latin America, the usual suspects have criticised the actions against Khaddafy as an American plot to sieze Libya's oil.  Chavez of Venezuela, Castro of Cuba, as well as the Presidents of Nicaragua and Bolivia have spoken out against the UN sanctioned actions.  China, of course, deplores the use of military force unless it is by them or their buddies in North Korea.

In Japan, radiation has been found in milk and fresh vegetables, heightening the radiation scare.  It is still unclear if one or more of the reactors in trouble will go into a full melt down mode.

Bloody crackdowns on dissidents are also taking place in Bahrain, Iran, Yemen, and Syria.
Hamas, the terrorist group that controls the Gaza strip, launched mortar and rocket attacks into Israel.   Casualties are reported.

In the USA, a train station built with stimulus money and named after "stimulus czar" Vice President Joe Biden came in more than $5 million over budget.
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, a possible candidate for President next time around, has criticised President Obama as the "Spectator in Chief".  Some have remarked that it is not helpful to criticize the President when military action is ongoing.  Of course, those same people had no problems criticizing the last president under similar conditions.

The Congressional Budget Office has issued a report that claims that the President's ten year budget forecast was off by two trillions dollars - to the red.  This will surely further complicate the ongoing negotiations - or non-negotions - over the current budget in Congress.

In Washington, State,  the  National Forest Service is eagerly looking for someone to take over the oeprations of the Stehikin Lodge and Store in the North Cascades National Park.   The last time they advertised for a contractor to take over, they had no one submit a bid.   And rumor is that you do not have to stay there over the winter....

Jokes of the Day (since someone has been falling down on the job.  Hint, hint, Mr. B!)

'I’ve often wanted to drown my troubles, but I can’t get my wife to go swimming'

If your dog is barking at the back door and your wife is shouting through the letterbox, who do you let in first?
The dog, of course. He’ll shut up once you let him in.

Why can women never find their way to a man’s heart?
Because they aim too high.

Why is psychotherapy a lot quicker for men than women?
When it’s time to go back to his childhood, he’s already there.

I showed my wife the new Sports Illustrated with all the body painting pictures, and suggested that it would be fun to try that ourselves.  She agreed, and dumped a bucket of paint over my head.    My, this couch is lumpy...........
