I mean teaching is what it is really all about right?? Winning is just a bonus.....
From the time that a child starts a sport until the time that they finish, the first question that they always hear is what?.... " Did you win?" closely followed by "Did you score?".
Theses questions come from grandma, grandpa, siblings, school teachers etc, etc...
So even though they won't keep "official" score during spring or in your mind it's all about development and having fun...I guarantee that the child on the pitch knows the exact score and who scored them. Does it bother them if they lose?...yea for about 2 minutes..then they are off playing again...how long does it bother the parents? I've seen some parents bring up a game a year later just to make a point. How long does it bother the administration of your club? Depends on the level you coach and the level of your club. There is only a few that should worry about wins...MLS teams and National teams, everyone else should be about development, but sadly not the case..even in the youth level coaches are being evaluated by the Directors of Coaching on their win loss record.
So the earlier you teach that there is a winner and a "not-winner" in sports the better off your team will be as a whole and if you can make sure that they understand to be humble winners and gracious losers. Win without ego, lose without excuses, and never quit.
