US Womens game against Mexico
« on: June 06, 2011, 11:18:47 AM »

Did anybody else catch this game yesterday...wow!!!!  I really do hope that the team was physically exhausted per the commentators, cuz this team couldn't hit a broad side of a barn with their shots.  Abby looked decent up top as she is a real physical force, but others looked completely lost on how they get a shot and more importantly put the shot on goal.  Rapione (Sp?) who is supposed to be responsible for set plays was terrible, continually losing the ball and serving into space where the US had no chance of getting on the end of the play.  The left back, maybe good defensively, had little if any passing ability.  It was good to see Hope back in goal again after her injury...She looked good as always and even played well too ;)  She wasn't challenged much.  I would have to say the US looked a bit disjointed and any hope of winning the whole enchelada would be a prayer at best right now.  They are supplosed to get some time off, hopefully they get their legs under them and are ready to go by the end of the month.

I agree with Yote, except that he understates the problem.   Poor passing quality, players all being on a different sheet of music, lack of shooting prowess.   And all this against Mexico, who had a 16 year old in goal.

At this rate, it will be the worst US showing in a WWC ever.   Prediction - Pia is gone within 1 month of the WWC.

It is amazing how few people comment on this topic.  Maybe that says something about womens sports.  When the world cup rolls along everybody will be back on the bus, but until then .... poof.

Yote, it appears that only successful coaches, real students of the game, have the proper appreciation for high level women's soccer.   :)
The who are not are probably  nukulterney Real Madrid fans!  >:(.

I would comment, but unfortunately I am a bit behind in my soccer viewing, I have quite a number of games on my DVR and this one is down the list a ways, especially after your commentaries concerning the quality of play....

yes, I saw the game- I watched it in Spanish since I enjoy listening to the commentators GOOOOOOLLLLL (only when Mexico scores though). Again the US really focuses on tactical, physical and direct play. The size that Mexico has would mean the US could just walk all over them or run over them, but it is not the old Mexico. They did panic a few times, but for the most part they like to build from the back and seemed much more technically sound than the last time I saw them. It seems Mexico is trying to implement the Spanish/Brazilian style of soccer more to their game. even the mens team seems to be passing more and quicker to counter. The problem agains the US is that they seemed to only want to defend-

I remember the old games between these 2 teams 16-0, 8-0, etc. Not the case anymore as they are focusing on the Womens game more, plus with all the Mexican clubs now focusing on the Women it will get tighter and tighter. Mexico still has a lot of US players that have to try to adjust to their style, but as more US club teams start moving away from the English game or as Mexico produces more top level players in Mexico the US will start losing more

As for the US, there are still no changes to the game from what I see and actually looked worse than I have seen them. Maybe they were missing their top players, which is the excuse I kept hearing on ESPN as to why the Mens US team lost to Spain.
