Advice Needed - London Travel
« on: July 26, 2011, 01:57:56 PM »

Traveling to London in August and hope to catch a match.  I have two options right now and am looking for advice - overall atmosphere, ease in getting to stadium, fan experience, etc.  My options are Everton at Tottenham or Aston Villa at Fulham.  Those appear to be the only home matches in London that fit my travel schedule and I'm not going to be able to leave the city.  Thanks in advance.

I have no advice about getting around over there, but I'd say go see the Everton/Tottenham game
Have a great time no matter which game you see.

If you are able to get tickets -- and good luck with that -- either match would be a great experience. My first choice would be Everton at Spurs. White Hart Lane is a fantastic place to watch a match.

If this is your first time in London and you have time to take in some of the city's history, you also need to check out some of these. You can get everywhere on the tube, provided you Mind the Gap  ;D
1. The Tower of London and the Crown Jewels (you could spend six or eight hours here easily)
2. Parliament and Big Ben
3. Evensong at Westminster Abbey
4. St. Paul's Cathedral
5. The British Museum
6. Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery (one of the world's great art museums and you can't beat the price, which is a voluntary donation!)
7. Buckingham Palace, the Mall, St. James Park, Hyde Park and Whitehall
8. The West End, Soho and Covent Garden.
9. Hampton Court and Kensington
10. The London Eye and other attractions along The Thames
11. The Globe Theatre
12. Tour new Wembley Stadium
13. Harrod's Department Store

That's about a week and a half's worth of stuff to do and you'd just be getting started! With all due respect to New York, Paris and Tokyo, London is without question the world's greatest city.

If you find yourself unable to get tickets, don't forget lower division matches.  The atmosphere can be a lot more fun there.  To find them I use www.footiemap.com

If you like books, make sure to visit FFoyle's.   And I always found the Imperial War Museum to be extremely interesting.  The "Battle of Britain" exhibition is outside of London, but well worth the experience I have been told.  And I always enjoyed visitng the Cutty Sark, which is colocated with an interesting little museum.  You will right where GMT is right on the dot!

Thanks all!  My travel plans continue to be fluid (going for work) so I may not even be there on a good weekend for a match.  I'll make every effort, though as I think it would be a tremendous experience.

IMO this is one thing that is great about forums such as this - getting lots of good and free advice.  I really appreciate it - much better than hearing about coaches and parents drinking  ;D

Churchill's Bunker is a can't miss attraction too.  Make sure to stop along the way in any of the pubs and hoist a pint.  You'll learn tons about the area while quafing your thirst.
