Tournaments
« on: July 29, 2011, 05:29:25 PM »

It seems that most tournaments, (not all) in this state are down a bit (or more than that) in numbers of teams this year.  That makes it harder to have a quality tournament offering a good experience for the players.   There have been some tournaments cancelled or put off a year.

Would it be better if there were less tournaments offered each year, and that the tournaments were organized so that they were more spread out instead of having too many on certain dates?   Yes, it would involve coordination and the state using its power to sanction (or not) tournaments.   Is there the possibility of tournaments raising their prices?   Yes, and that is not a good thing.
Say for instance that each district has a rep to the "Central Tournament Coordination Committee" and no more than 3 tournaments per weekend are approved inside the WSYSA.  And no club can host more than a single tournament in a year.    Should precedence be given to the bigger or older tournaments?

Any thoughts?

Too many tournaments chasing too few teams in an economy that people are trying to hold discretionary costs down.

Marketplace will sort it out.

The reality is that tournaments are the biggest fundraisers for most clubs.  If sanctioning/or not by the state is the route taken, can we not now name and assume which DOC's will have their tournaments sanctioned by the state?  I agree their are too many.  And I agree the best solution may be to let the market work itself out.

We can guarantee that the tournaments for all the big RCL clubs will continue as they all make friendly agreements.  "I will send 15 teams to your tourney if you send 15 to ours? Deal!"

Any club that is seeing declines in its numbers needs to look at the factors.  Competition for weekend?  Poor quality?  Distance/local?  Etcetera. If it is a strong organization, it can fix the contributors. However, it takes work year round. There is nothing preventing these non-RCL tournaments from behaving like the rest ... sending hoards of teams to one in return for support for theirs.  Find the parties that have mutual self interest, they typically play you in the fall and work together.

I hope the natural market forces will fix this without the need for more bureaucracy.

Most State Associations would welcome a "non-conflict" calendar however if a State Association says no to someone then US Club turns round and says "It's OK just sign with us".  You can't stop a tournament from being put on becauuse there is always someome out there willing to sanction it.

It is unfortunate but it is an open market that is completely saturated, much like league play is across the Northwest. How many leagues and tournaments do we need and how much money can the parents afford to shell out so that their sons/daughters can travel and get "competition"  .....

Some of the marketing these days is amazing, some tournaments are offering discounts for multiple teams of the same club and offer a bring-a-friend program. Others say that if you send 5 teams to ours we will send 5 to yours.

In time it will work out but I do not see a bright light at the end of the tunnel just yet. In the meantime choose your tournament wisely and throw the dice and hope you get to play the level of team that you want.

Doesn't the problem start with the fact that WYSY, USCS, and USYS can all sanction a tournament? Simple - WSYS should be the be all, end all, for tournament sanctioning.

USCS and USYS should be a national program that runs only national competitions. Even then - there shouldn't be two national associations.
