College Connection Options
« on: August 02, 2011, 09:28:59 AM »

Outside of club ball, what other options are there (soccer related) to "be seen"?

College ID camps?  High School ball?  Is there a way to just guest play?  I am wondering what others have tried, what works, what does not.  Club hopping is not an option - so what suggestions might be out there to consider?

Most showcase type tournaments have a guest player process where you can post your info and teams looking for players post info - then can be matched up Kind of like on-line dating:)  We have never done it but I know of people that have - they went to several big Ca tournaments.

Depending on the number of players the team has your player may or may not see playing time so that would be a question I would ask before traveling to guest play in another state.

Good Luck!

Be sure to invite coaches to league games too - this has worked.  ie if you travel to Spokane for a leage game send e-mails to coaches in that area.

Ritz - that sounds like a classified ad!  I will try and look into that.  Thanks for the idea.

tour colleges = the ones that the player wants to go to school at and then e-mail the coach about camps, id days, etc. If they are U 17 or U18 they should have a short list of colleges by now that they want to attend anyway.   Most summer camps are over now because it is time for colleges to start working out for the fall season.

I know you said outside the club, but does your club offer any assistance/guidance to its college bound players?  How many clubs out there do?  And is it of any value?

I know the older brother of a kid from my DS's team was id'd at a local college camp that invited select high school players.  It's only a CC and your DS may have higher aspirations, but this kid is a student-player in college now.  It's no Akron, but he's pretty excited just the same.

This works well.  And if we found ourselfes near a univeristy of interest during a tournament stop. ( Like your team in the upcoming very competitive Santa Clara Sporting Invitational),  We would call forward and see if we could get a tour, Or just go and let the boys take the place in.

Lots of fine choices in the bay area that are within striking distance of the south bay Santa Clara area.

Good luck at Sporting!!

yes good info.  Went to this tournament last year and toured Stanford (just for fun), but always look at both big and little and all divisions because you just never know what your kid will want.  mine went from thinking about 20-30K school to now liking 1500-2000 population schools.  Who knows what the dk will end up choosing in another year.

When my son's squad went to Cerritos one of our parents arranged them a tour with Fullerton.  It was a great set up for the boys - I was making airport runs so missed that tour and was really bummed about that!

I was looking for ways for a player to be seen/known without having to rely on a club team - thats why I asked.  I am still looking for tips.

Thanks all!

Guest playing at good showcases is a great option. DD did it a time or 2. But perhaps I'm not understanding your reference to not relying on a club team. Camps put on by specific colleges might fit the bill if you don't want to play for ANY club team to be seen. And at smaller schools that don't have the budget to travel to many showcases, video is often used. Perhaps you can get local schools to come to a high school game as well......

There was a coaching change back in Feb and the last six months has been nothing but challenges, about two weeks ago many players jumped ship so the team DS knew is quite different- from what I understand another coaching change cant happen til next season so DS is trying to make the most of things as they stand now.  DS absolutely loves his club but the team is on this insane rollercoaster that does not help the College Connection  very well at all.  So, in looking for alternatives to College viewing  relying on the rollercoaster may not be the best choice right now.  Maybe things will get better in short order so DS is keeping as positive an outlook as possible.  Til such time as the team is brought back to right (this past weekend at Santa Clara sparked of hope) the U-17 college viewing season  marches on and DS does not want to miss the pararde - so what to do?

Does your DS know geographicly or schoolasticly where his preferences are.  He can contact the coaches direct and express an interest in the school and ask them how to get exposure, where they will be attending and what they will be watching.   Most  have camps right at there schools he could attend. (A number of boys on my DS,s team did this this summer.)  It will cost though. But if you are getting in front of a targeted school and coach it could be worth it .

I'm thinking this might be the way to go.

In this state, at what point would college coaches attend (north end) high school games?
