MERGER MANIA -- Tell Us Your Stories
« on: August 26, 2011, 05:27:52 AM »

Merger mania appears all the rage these days here.  Welcome and unwelcome.

Tell us your story about merger overtures and directives.

Let's get it rolling with any news of the worst kept secret in merger mania this year ... the South Snohomish County YSA -- Northshore YSA dance. Who wins, who loses, who is pushing for it and why, who is against it and why, and the tactics being employed by all.

Remember, to get those seams out of one's laundry, it often takes a fairly hot iron and plenty of good ole pressure.  Perhaps the same heat and pressue is needed to effect seamless soccer in our grand ole corner of tranquility.  ???

Well aren't NWN and FCA merging?  But it won't officially take place until next year after state cup.  Heard that from someone connected in NWN

After the 2011 season, the following clubs will attempt to merge:

Dos & FWU
NWN & WA Rush
Westsound & Crush

Note: the hypothetical mergers will only take place if the Club Board's look at the big picture, which is youth player development and attempting to keep costs down for families. If this happens, the new merged clubs will than better be able to compete and not lose their top players.

I'd be surprised to see WS & Crush merge after Crush hijacked WS's .com domain name.

I thought the old rumor was DOS merging with GRFC or HPFC... hmm... FWU is a new take on the merger rumors.

NWN & WA Rush?  I don't know about that - what would be in it for either club?  NWN & FCA maybe.

DOS/HPFC/GRFC is an old story, but hadn't heard FWU may be in the mix.

With these mergers, would RCL contract or just accept more clubs?

Does sponsor affiliation matter at all?  NWN and Rush are both Nike, while FCA is Adidas.  Not sure about HPFC - Dos - GRFC etc.

DOS is Adidas, HPFC is Nike, and GRFC is Under Armour...

I would love to see a DOS/HPFC/GRFC merger! I think it would make more sense, rather then seeing DOS head to FWU...nothing against FWU, we just know more people in theses three clubs, and it would be like a family reunion!

I would think they can change anytime they want unless they are under some kind of contract.
Which could be possible... or not   lol

Wash Rush and Evergreen merged last year, didn't seem to have a positive outcome, the combined talent level seemed to drop as many of the top players from both clubs moved to other clubs instead of staying in the new larger program.

You can't merge cross Association borders - that is why NWN and FCA are merging.  NWN wants the Northshore base.  WA RUSH is doing just fine and won't be merging with anyone.

You can if you merge into a mega association!

In most cases clubs are independent entities and I see no reason why two clubs could not merge no matter where they reside.

With respect to a club having teams in multiple associations ... Taking what is called the USSF 100% rule and applying it within WYS ... A single club should be able to register some of their players with one Association and others with a different Association.  Per USSF they do not have to set up different business entities for each Association.  The club would have two different "club numbers" within WYS because of the system of assigning club numbers.

The only sticking point would be for a RCL club ... if they have a charter with Association A but no Association B ... they would need to register their RCL teams with Association A.

"The Pulse" mentioned NWN and Seattle United were looking at merging?

Or did I read this wrong?

Here's a question for the historians out there...just how many clubs/associations have merged recently (say the last 5 years-ish)?
Seems like there's a lot of merger talk, but which ones have actually happened?
What happened to the old names?  Did they form a completely new organization or did one take over and the other cease to exist?

Pacific Premier became WA Rush soccer.  Evergreen Soccer was in Everett.  Beginning of the 2010 year Evergreen was merged with WA Rush soccer and is now solely known as WA RUSH.  Evergreen name is dead and gone.

Pacific Premier came from Lake Stevens SC, Granite Hill and ... hmm was it Marysville?

Evergreen's lifespan goes back to 2006 at least. They apparently had been around and been established enough to be listed as a "Tier Two" club in the PDL DoC's proposal in 2006.

Lake Stevens, Marysville, Granite Falls. The Lake Stevens select teams had been called the Eclipse, the Marysville select teams the Force.

Mukelteo was absorbed by NWN 3 or 4 years ago

Skyriver had a bunch of teams split off and have formed a new club Monroe FC earlier this year - both clubs now left with a handful of teams each.

Call me an old fogey, but any club that was not around ten years ago is a "new club".   When Evergreen was formed, it created a bit of a buzz in some circles with its promises of being coach run, professionally oriented, and a clear alternative to old style clubs.
And we saw how having the DoC being given a free hand ended up.

I'm not sure I qualify as a "historian" but the couve has had a couple notable mergers the past few years.

CPSC Timbers merged with VUSA* = VUSA Timbers
FC Vancouver merged with Camas-Washougal SC = WSA / Washington Soccer Academy
Tri-Mountain and Chinook Alliance merged to create = Pacific FC

* "VUSA" itself is the result of a merger of three local rec/select clubs

And of course VUSA Timbers and WSA/CWSC attemped to merge earlier this year. The deal was not completed but not dead.
