« on: October 25, 2011, 01:39:59 PM »

TopDrawerSoccer put out their Top 100 update, and WA's Kelyn Rowe is still #1 in the country - National Top 100 Upperclassmen.

Only a sophomore, amazing. Keep up the great work Kelyn!

Was he one of the players who came over when Crossfire bought the U-13 FW Storm state champs, I mean hired their coach away?

Jeesh. Sounds like a long drive to train 3 times per week. With a home match, that makes 4 times from Federal Way to 60 Acres. 90 minutes round trip each time without traffic.

I guess the proof is in the puddin'. The dude is the #1 upperclassmen in the country & starts on the US U-20's. Maybe we will see him in Europe next year??

I'd think Generation Adidas (MLS) is also a possibility.

I was thinking that as I was typing my post. I know he has trained with the Sounders & at least has spoken about Europe (cant remember if he went). I saw a couple U-20 matches from CONCACAF qualifying in Guatemala. He looked great moving forward with the ball & really looked impressive off the ball toward the far post. Not sure how that translates to Europe but I remember Rongen really thought he should be out of college. If not he looks to be #2 MF after the Wegner kid from Duke on most MLS draft prospective lists.

Yes he was an Andy Flory product........ regardless of the trouble Andy got into on the girls side which was very serious. He was one hell of a coach and teacher of the game....he just should have never been given a girls team. That Federal Way team was one of the best technical and tactical teams I'd seen in a long time and Kelyn was a star back then as much as he is now.

He got a lot of great habits and technical abilities in those early years before Crossfire and i think he'd credit Andy for a lot of why he is where he is now, even though some may view it as not politically correct. I believe he was shaped by those years and had the hard work and dedication to continue to develop himself into what he is now.

He's a very good player...great even....but he always was...ALWAYS

Squash, I remember that FW Storm team that Crossfire bought.  It was extremely good, the best team that I have seen at that age.    They had a ton of talent.  Flory, whatever his later sins, had done a very good job with that team.

I was on referee crews for a number of games for Flory's '90 team, both the FW Storm version and the Crossfire version.  It was one of the better teams I've seen here in Washington, although in my view they weren't as good as Strom's EFC '94 Red team.  The EFC team versions at U14-U16 simply were more skilled overall and deeper on the bench (I realize that by U16 the Crossfire team wasn't comparable because of the Academy).

I believe the academy wasn't even around when the bulk of that team moved from Federal Way to Crossfire.

If my memory is correct it had more to do with sending a quality team to the Manchester United Event in Beaverton, OR than anything else.

The Rowe teams (FW or X-Fire) were better than the EFC Strom teams at the same age.  Those Rowe lead team were powerhouses winning multiple titles.  One could say that the Strom teams have benefited from the Academy  being in place.

No Academy, no titles.

I think Strom had a BU90 team.
But the 94 team mentioned above is still together and has won the equivalant of the RCL Div 1 for 6 years straight years. Won State for 5 of the last six years, won a FWRL season, won the far west regional tournament last year and was one goal differental away from making the national title game last year. (four teams tied at 2-1).  Although they have lost five player to the sounders this team has real depth and may field its best team yet this year. They are 13-0-0 in div 1 play so far. 58 goals for 9 against        No Titles?

Mossback, I believe that Squash was pointing out that the Academies had taken the talent that would have been competing against EFC.  And it is a valid point

Mossback - Out of pure curiosity...do you know how many have been with the 94 team for those last 6 years?

But I don't think that is a particularly useful analysis.  Strom's EFC 94s won the state title while competing with Crossfire in all but one of the pre-academy years and has competed well against outside competition throughout its history.  Flory's FW team had trouble solving Strom's EFC '90s until he combined his FW roster with the Crossfire roster and wasn't as successful out of state as EFC '94 has been.

None of this is intended to take away from Mr. Rowe's accomplishments.  It simply speaks to the side point about Flory's team more generally.
