Winter Field Conditions
« on: November 21, 2011, 02:09:29 PM »

What exactly are the rules regarding snow on the field? - we played in Yakima this weekend - there were 4" of snow on the field - while attempts were made to clear the areas where the lines appeared, and some snow was removed in the box - overall the field was a real mess and big risk of injury - Isn't the official suppose to make sure the field is "playable" without kids getting hurt?

Snow, in and of itself, is not a sufficient reason to cancel a game.  It really is not a significant injury risk.   You might even argue that the softness of the snow decreases certain types of injuries.

It is the referees who decide if a field is playable or not.

And four inches is more snow than the paper said fell in Yakima.

Playing in snow is a different technical and tactical enviroment and I certainly prefer not to.  But it is not a world ending event.

When else can you do a 20 foot slide tackle?

I say this parent shouldve helped clear the field.  It is a lot of work to clear snow from the entire field, but it has been done before.   Now if it is icy -- I have a problem with kids playing on sheet ice, because of risk of injury.

Concur with Yote.   Ice is a different matter than snow

DD loves playing in snow- just doesn't like it when it gets packed onto the bottom of her cleats.  But she also likes rain and mud.....at least the snow is easy to get out of a uniform..... never heard of a snow stain.

But then again- beginning of the rec season I had a new parent call my house on the morning of a game- she said "it's raining." I said yeah.... she said 'is there still a soccer game?" rotfl

When I coached u11 I got that email all the time! Finally I sent a blanket email saying "Unless told otherwise please assume the fields are open!" hahaha, "it's raining." I love that one.

DD played in Spokane yesterday with about 3 inches on the ground.  However much to Shadow's credit and my surprise they had the field cleared the night before.  Was told the club payed ~$200 to get it cleared.  Was kinda looking forward to seeing a game in the snow and thought it might slow down some of those fast Spokane girls. (1-1 tie BTW).

I have heard over the years that some turf fields are only to be cleared by ground crews as to not mar the playing surface with shovels etc.

Playing on snow is fine, playing on ice is an accident waiting to happen

If I'm the referee and if there truly is 4 inches of snow on a field, it's unplayable.

I tend to agree with you, but the radio said that there was less than 3 inches in Yakima.  If it has started to melt, rather than refreezing, and some areas of the field have been cleared, it is playable.  These are kids, let them have some fun.

The worst field I ever played on was at a youth tournament in Madrid.   There was no snow on the pitch, but very little grass was left in March.   The wind was howling at about 30 kph, the temp was about -5 degrees C before the windchill, the churned up mud had frozen into razor sharp ridges that would slice through the skin of a leg on any slide tackle, and the locals thought nothing of the winter conditions.
We had been swimming in the sea on Christmas day, the team did not have any warm ups, just our shorts and jerseys.  (And 1979 shorts at that, they did not cover very much!!!).
Needless to say, our Undefeated Provincial Champions team did not score a goal in any of the 3 games.....The locals won the tournament, but both Lisbon and Barcelona entires were fully kitted out and able to play well.  I think a couple of my teammates may have faked injuries in the first game so that they did not have to go back out there for the following games.........  I didn't really blame them.
