Washington State Cup Play-In

? The Washington Youth Soccer Play-In format - hereafter referred to as the Play-In - will consist of a placement format for all unseeded teams with promotion to the applicable level state Cup (Championships or Challenge). Any unseeded team wanting to compete in the US Youth Soccer Washington State Championships must enter this tournament format. Teams wanting to compete in only the Challenge Cup need not enter the Play-In.

? Points based on standings in the Regional Club League (Division I and II only) season prior to the beginning of State Cups will determine each seeded team in the Championships and Challenge Cup. No more than 8 teams out of a maximum of 16 teams in the Championships Cup will be seeded. No more than 8 teams in the Challenge Cup will be seeded. Teams seeded into the Challenge Cup may give up their seed to enter the Play-in for the Championships. Abandoned seeds in either the Championships or Challenge will not be replaced. Seeds are not transferrable.

? Teams playing in an older age group in the Regional Club League, and wanting to play age appropriate for State Cups, will be seeded higher than teams in their appropriate age group. If multiple teams are playing up, those teams will be seeded based on their standings in the older age group.

? After the registration deadline has passed, a blind draw will be conducted to schedule all unseeded teams into the Play-in. Play-in games will not be an aggregate format. The number of Play-In games is contingent on the number of teams contesting for participation in the US Youth Soccer Washington State Championships in each gender/age group that utilizes the Play-In format.

? Play-In games must be played on the weekends scheduled by Washington Youth Soccer. If both teams agree to rescheduling a game, the game must be played PRIOR to, but not after, the date it was originally scheduled.

? Teams progressing to the appropriate Washington Youth Soccer State Cup will have their application updated accordingly by Washington Youth Soccer. Withdrawals from State Cup play after State Cup Play-In will result in ineligibility for all State Cup play the following year and Association fines as applicable.

? If applicable, the Play-in format will be utilized in the boys and girls ages U12-U18 in the Championships and boys and girls in the U12-19 in the Challenge Cup. Age groups younger than U12 will not utilize a Play-In format.

? The Founders Cup will not utilize a Play-In format.

Thanks Futal!

Here's a real world situation.  The BU16's have 16 teams that have applied and been accepted.  So, is this how it would go?  The top 8 teams, which would presumably be the 8 teams from RCL Division 1 would be seeded.  Then the other 8 teams would still go through a play-in process to determine seeding or would they just be added to the vacant spots based on finishing within their individual divisions?  This is where I am wondering what will happen.

Thanks!

Good question ... I would assume the top 8 RCL teams (Division 1 & 2) who register for the Championship Cup would be seeded.  The next 8 would be seeded into the Challenge Cup.  If a team does not like their seed into the Challenge Cup and want to play in the Championship Cup then the seed is lost (filled with blind draw) and the team goes into the play-in pool and placed there via a blind draw.

But this is all new to us.

When I saw that the roster freeze date was the Monday before the Preliminary round I got a bit worried.  However, I then saw that a player playing on a team in the play-in game is bound to that team for the duration of the tournament.  So if an A team player is sent down to help the B team through the play-in.  That player cannot go back to the A-team during State Cup even though the A-team roster has not been frozen yet.

From what I read blind draw ... Only top 8 RCL get seeded into the Championship Cup ... all others wanting in are blind draw.  So State League teams has same shot at #9 RCL team

I have a funny feeling that what will happen with the BU16s is that the top 8 teams from RCL Division 1 will be seeded and the other 8 teams who have been accepted based on their application to play Championship Cup will be blind drawn in to fill the gaps.  So, potentially, like Futsal said, the 3rd place State League team has the same opportunity to play Crossfire as the 1st place RCL Division 2 team.  I think I would be a little upset if I was the first place RCL Division 2 team.

It looks like everyone gets to play-in. Can someone explain what that means for Challenge Cup? Is a team that loses play-in completely denied the chance to play any State Cup? Or does it mean that there are different levels of Challenge Cup and teams go to the lowest?

The way it worked last year was if you lost the play-in game you played in the Challenge Cup.  In the case of only 16 teams you have 8 seeded so you would need 8 additional teams to fill the brackets, so I don't think there will be true play-in games.  I may be completely off base.  I don't know.

if only 16 sign up maybe no play in ... 8 get seeded into 4 brackets 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5 ... then remaining 8 get random draw and fill the brackets.  Top two from each bracket moves to quarter finals.

Also ... since the play-in games for Championship and Challenge are held at the same time.  If there is any loser option for Championship Play-in it would have to be a guaranteed spot in the preliminary round of the Challenge Cup.

The current play in rules are very confusing and appear to contradict themselves in multiple paragraphs (what else is new?) For example...

Teams wanting to compete in only the Challenge Cup need not enter the Play-In.

Followed by

If applicable, the Play-in format will be utilized in the boys and girls ages U12-U18 in the Championships and boys and girls in the U12-19 in the Challenge Cup.

Umm..which is it?

But this is my favorite....

Teams playing in an older age group in the Regional Club League, and wanting to play age appropriate for State Cups, will be seeded higher than teams in their appropriate age group.

so, any team that plays up is by definition better than a team that plays at age.
