FP Fury merging with WPFC?
« on: December 12, 2011, 10:43:56 AM »

Here's one!  Has anyone else heard it.  Franklin Pierce merging with WPFC?  Proximity would be beneficial to WPFC as would players for recruitment to the premier level.  I understand there may be a meeting tonight regarding this!

I hope not! What could FP do for WPFC, besides numbers and headaches?

FP does not have paid coaching. They voted down a SHSC merger a couple of years ago - which made more sense - because they didnt want to pay for coaching. Why would they vote for this?

Federal Way had been approached at one point as well and was afraid of acquiring WPFC's debt.  Besides, in FW's case they are already an RCL club.  I see the advantage to WPFC because they end up with a base of players to draw from plus a source of money to support the premier program much like Crossfire.  From Franklin Pierce's perspective I guess it gets them access to the RCL so they no longer lose kids to the current RCL clubs in the area.  I don't know.

Wouldn't FP benefit from better coaching and use of the fields?

is it not true that they are the only club who owns their fields?  so I assume they have a debt on those fields but compare that to the other clubs who have to pay to rent fields year after year.  i would rather pay the debt of ownership then worry about rent going up every year as cities need to collect more money to balance their budgets.

It's not necessarily the debt on the field it's the refinancing of the property in order to try and keep their heads above financial waters.  FP wouldn't benefit from the fields, WPFC would benefit from the FP has available.

So WPFC takes the stronger players to play on the premier teams and adds a select program, much like Crossfire Select, to help financially?

The Fury are having a coaches meeting tonight from 6:30-8:00. If open to the public, one might gain information to any possible merger talks with WPFC. It only makes sense if WPFC had two teams in RCL for age groups and offer a Select program for players that do not want to play RCL and the costs associated. WPFC could use more lights and another turf field. It would make sense if costs were kept down, keep quality high, and yield more competitive teams from a merger.

I don't believe the Premier club within a district can have select teams, correct?.  That the number of premier teams that a Premier team may have has to be negotiated with the district, correct?  And that there can only be one Premier club per district, correct?  Does Tacoma not have a problem still with two Premier Clubs (WPFC and Harbor)?  Or am I remembering a bunch of old crap?

mixed bag - some vehemently opposed while others are somewhat receptive to hearing additional details.  Lots of details missing from the proposal presented.  As it stands though...talks will continue.

It's not necessarily the debt on the field it's the refinancing of the property in order to try and keep their heads above financial waters.

So everyone that refinances their house must be doing it just to keep their heads above water. The thought of doing it to get a better rate or being a smart move could never happen   ???

IMHO .... Very few clubs look to the future while most just try to make it to the next year. Having debt is not a bad thing but not staying ontop of it would be.

FP wouldn't benefit from the fields, WPFC would benefit from the FP has available.
So all the fields that FB uses all summer long are free?? What a great deal.

once again sounds wrong to me !!

BigSmokey,
Rumor has it that WPFC had a short term loan that has to be refinnanced very soon.   Apparently they could not secure any long term finnancing for their fields, and now are having increased problems in getting financing.   That's what I hear, anyway.

Yes EW!  That is same I had heard.  What I was talking about regarding the fields is the availability.  FP has access to more fields than WPFC, thus making it easier for WPFC to schedule practices without three or four teams squeezed onto one field.  Better expelanation?   :drinks:

I had heard that was only a short term loan, not a long term one.   But my source may be mistaken.

Who would really want to loan on a kids' ballfield?   If the org defaults, then you foreclose and get all the bad publicity.  Maybe even a local zoning board saying that the land must remain playfields, petitions, kids on TV crying, an Occupy your bank movement started, etc. etc.

I think it's an old rumor too and the loan was refinanced not too long ago saving a nice chunk of change ( to the tune of about 50,000.00 )

They rent Clover Park High School stadium & used to rent Puyallup High School stadium when their grass fields become unplayable in the Winter. Renting Franklin Piece High School stadium (Fury's main field) does not seem to me to be enough of a motivator for WP. I still don't think the player pool is deep enough for WP either...

First off, the fields are in a flood plane and also zoned open space. Pierce country will not allow any new construction. Land in the flood plan in the city of Fife or Puyallup is a different matter but this land is not close nor will it be incorporated anytime soon.

The Club did re-fi from the orginal lender, get a great rate and is doing just fine in the repayment of said loan and looking to proceed with the second turf field within a couple of years.

Old rumors or not, WPFC is looking for someone to merge with and their was a board meeting held by Franklin Pierce that openly discussed the idea of a merger.  this was last week.  So, take from that what you want.  Personally I have no involvement so it doesn't matter to me.

Read the Master Service Agreement.  Sounds like the Fury may partnering with WP to represent WP in the Select category for the SouthSound area.  We'll see.

I read it too and the few Fury parents I've talked to are in favor of it.  It's a 3 year contract that either party can terminate with 60 days notice.  Also, to placate the Fury side, wording was changed so that the name will be 'WPFC Fury' instead of 'WPFC Select'.  Fury gets access to top notch coaching and training, WP can use the FP fields with Fury approval. They split the cost of a new DOC to manage the ''WPFC Fury' side. Fury continues to manage their own finances.  Personally, I think it's a win/win and believe it will be approved, but we'll find out when they vote next week.
