National Team Coaching Change
« on: January 04, 2012, 11:33:16 AM »

I see Cabreara is out as the U-17 coach.

I have talked to a few players that have played for him and I am sure this will come as good news, late, but good news.

Replacement? Will local product Dave C get the job?

I really doubt that Cheasler will get the job.   Klinsman is going away from that sort of good old boy, party apparatchik appointment system.   What are Tom Dooley and Earnie Stewart up to these days?

It would be scary if you knew what you were talking about!

So Dark Victory, who is your barb aimed at?

Looking at his bio, which you so thoughtfully provided, shows that he is indeed a "party apparatchik".
It will be interesting to see if the same house cleaning that Klinsmann is doing on the men's side is replicated on the women's side.   Of course, the argument can be made that it is not needed on the women's side.

On the face of it, both Tom Dooley and Earnie Stewart would be much more likely candidates for the position.   Both were professional players of long standing, both former USA MNT greats, both (as I recall) got involved with coaching after completing their playing careers.   Earnie was back in the Netherlands with a club there as an assistant coach of some sort, last I heard.   While Dooley has bounced back and forth between Germany and the US in his coaching if memory serves.

EW,

Your assessment in terms of replacement might be correct if you go with the assumption that Klinsmann  (or the MNT Head Coach) calls the shots on the U17-U23 coaches. I don't think that this has been the case in the past, and unless Klinsmann negotiated it, probably wasn't given to him.

Your judgement of Dave Chesler might be true if you only look at the surface (his bio). If you knew him, you likely might come to a different conclusion. Rather than be like the defintion below (courtesy of Merriam_Webster) I've found him more likely to challenge the status quo, especially with the current cabal at WYS when Chesler was at SU, than be a blind follower. He's a good man, a good coach, and a good instructor.

Definition of APPARATCHIK
1: a member of a Communist apparat
2: a blindly devoted official, follower, or member of an organization (as a corporation or political party) <a movie studio

Edson,
When I knew - briefly - Chesler, he was very supportive of Bobby Howe.   His bio is certainly that of an establishment apparatchik.   He may very well be a great guy and a good coach - notice that I have not said that he is not.  But his background is not that which Klinsmann is apparently looking for.

And all indications are that Klinsmann has the authority and the responsibility to call the shots on the entire men's side, including naming the coaches for the junior teams.  That had been a major sticking point in the previous runs the USSF had made for him, and he reportedly agreed this time after the USSF met his demands for control and a revamping of the system.

And the new guy for the U-17s is..................Richie Williams.
He was the BU-18 MNT coach, and is moving up to the U-17s.   Young, with lots of MLS experience as a player and five years as an MLS assistant coach.

This does seem to be more the type of guy that Klinsy has been looking for and putting into place, not the old youth coaching establishment guys.

Williams will have a year and a half to prove himself.  If not, then it will be egg on the face of Ramos and Klnsy.
