From the Kitsap Sun....

PORT ORCHARD — A Kingston woman was sentenced to two months of jail alternatives this week for a theft scheme in which she took around $100,000 from the coffers of a Silverdale-based soccer club while she served as its treasurer.

Wendy L. Bryant, 55, pleaded guilty to the first-degree theft felony charge and was sentenced by Kitsap County Superior Court Judge Jeanette Dalton, in what was an agreed recommendation between prosecutors and her attorney, Matt Clucas.

Clucas said the sentence was in light of her repayment of $65,000 of the stolen funds to WestSound FC premier soccer club. A court order, to be signed later, will determine the total amount she'll have to repay.

Clucas noted Bryant, treasurer of the club for about nine years, also reported the thefts to law enforcement and was "probably one of the most remorseful people I've ever seen in court."

Kitsap County deputy prosecutor Chad Enright agreed, saying Bryant "took complete and total responsibility."

An investigation by the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office found Bryant had been taking checks for club dues and cashing them herself while "doctoring" the books. But lawyers familiar with the case said much of the money was actually stolen by her using the club's PayPal account to purchase goods for herself on eBay and keeping the purchases off the club's books.

WestSound FC president Dale Holdren said the club was comfortable with the outcome of the case, also acknowledging Bryant's remorse, willingness to pay back the funds and also her years of dedication to the organization.

But he also pointed out: "Our primary goal is protecting the club and getting as full a restitution as possible."

Holdren said the club has used the case as a learning experience and changed many of its financial protocols. There's more thorough auditing performed on the club's books, and financial duties are divided between more club personnel.

"There are a lot more eyes seeing the budgets and bank statements," Holdren said.

The club has also stopped using PayPal, he said.
