Trying to talk the boss into releasing us workers because of snow, but I really just want to go watch the game.

No chatter about it.

+1 OD.  I can't wait!  I'm lucky enough to be working from home today.  I only wish I could watch the game in HD, instead of on GolTV.

Same here.  My local has GolTV in HD, so may trek out in the snow to see it there.

The chatter on Pro games is usually on the MLS Sounders World Soccer section.  Where I live, no cable.  We had DISH for 8 years.  They dropped GOL and I dropped them.  Now a fair # of Barca's games are on espn3.  Unfortunately, Centurylink doesn't have a contract w/espn and aren't an approved internet provider even if you have an Xbox live account - Sounderfan are you listening?  Here's a story for you.  Centurylink has 8 million customers and they can't watch soccer on ESPN3.  There must be 100 internet providers that have an agreement in place (from Comcast to the City of Monroe).

I digress.  If you haven't seen the game and plan to watch it later, turn away.  Ronaldo, who has struggled to make a mark against Barca whether for United or RM finally gave his side a goal and an early foothold in this tie.  But w/a 50 game unbeaten streak riding,  Captain Puyol struck back with a run from the back post to head home from a corner and equalise 4 minutes after the break after several chances had gone begging in the 1st half for the blau granna.  Messi lofted a chipped pass to Abidal in the 77th and that was enough for good once again to prevail over evil.  Once again, JoMos thugs had their knives out w/Pepe leading the way in bad behavior.

Real Madrid was actually playing without their normal El Classico thuggery until Barca tied it up.   Then the clubs, hatchets, knives and cleats came out.
Can you imagine any other "top club in the world" playing like that when they come under pressure and getting away with it?   Well, ok, perhaps in Italy...
Pepe is a disgrace to soccer.  But even when he is so deservedly suspended for the next match, JoMo still has Marcelo to bring in for "special one thuggery".

The refereeing in this game was peculiar.  I could understand each individual call (and most non-calls) for the most part.   Refs make mistakes, they are limited by their angle of vision, sometimes other players obstruct the view, and so on.    But over all in this game, if one rated the referees decisions on a scale of 1-10, with 5 being accurate, and 1 being blatantly pro-Madrid and 10 being pro-Barcelona, the body of calls would yield an average of 3.   Even the yellows given to Barcalona - Pique a poor card decision (ref apparently though Pique had swung and elbow on a header, but did not), Puyol for dissent (when was the last time we saw the Barca captain get a yellow for dissent?)  were bogus, 2 out of the 3.  (Busquets deserved his for encroachment).  But the ref could have, should have doubled the number of cards given out to Madrid.   How Ramos escaped I will never know.   And both Carvalho and Pepe should have gotten second cards before the end as well.
In/Out, Offsides  - Once again, the refereeing decisions were against Barcelona.  Again, referees can make mistakes and calling offsides at this level is particularly difficult.   But all the calls seemed to go Real Madrid's way.

This sort of thing is masked by the success that Barcelona enjoys despite the bias.   But it is none the less real.  It's as if the referees want to see the underdog triumph.......

If I recall correctly, the Barcelona keeper (who screwed up on Ronaldo's goal, a simple foot save would have worked easily) did not make a single save the entire match.   That is a more telling statistic than the 70-30 possession ratio.

Actually, I thought that Messi, Xavi and Iniesta all had subpar performances (by their standards) today.  Fabregas and Sanchez both were impressive.   The defense was outstanding.  I am no fan of Busquets, but he had one of his best outings today.

Real Madrid had built up some momentum going into this game, the close matches in the SuperCopa, the Cup victory last year, their 5 point lead in La Liga.   And they were playing at home.

But Real Madrid's high tempo faltered even before the second half began.  And their confidence was already breaking before Barca tied it up.    The unrelenting pressue of Barca in possession was something they could not handle.     JoMo has often used singular gameplans (some call them "trick gameplans") to win ties.   Inter-Barca of a couple of seasons ago was such an example.     The problem is, that when there is a difference in fundamental playing systems/philosophy where one is definitively superior to the other, a gimmick only works a very small part of the time.   (If it worked more often, it would be a system rather than a gimmick).
Individually, the Real Madrid players are every bit as good as the Barcelona players.   Valuation wise, they may be worth a bit more.   Certainly, if I were managing a team in England or Germany, I would most likely prefer Ronaldo to Messi.   Carvalho - despite his mistakes today - is a high quality defender.  Pique was basically let go by Manchester United.   Iniesta and Xavi are wonderful, creative players.  But speed and physicality in Germany and England would really hamper them.  Xabi Alonso and Ozul have already proven they can thrive in those enviroments.  So on and so forth.

It may be that JoMo is not as good a coach as the ghost of Johann Cruyff.

Ronaldo's first goal was impressive. Barca is fun to watch when they go in to their 4-6-0 formation. Tons of talent everywhere...

Several stories about player dissatisfaction with JoMo in Madrid have come out.    Apparently player cliques are forming.   And the fans are starting to turn on JoMo.   But as long as he wins La Liga title and Champions League, all will be forgiven.

More on the infighting in Madrid

>>>

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has called for an end to the talk surrounding his behind-the-scenes bust-up with coach Jose Mourinho and claims he and his boss are "fighting for the same interests" at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ramos was reportedly involved in a heated argument with Mourinho ahead of Sunday's Primera Division clash at home to Athletic Bilbao - which Madrid won 4-1 - and Spanish show Punto Pelota pointed the finger at goalkeeper Iker Casillas, claiming the club captain was the 'mole' who had filtered the information to Marca at the weekend.

But Ramos wrote on Twitter on Tuesday: "Everything [is] in order and [I'm] really looking forward to tomorrow's game [against Barcelona]."

And the defender called for an end to the mud-slinging in the Spanish press.

"Let's end this topic now," he pleaded. "I think that's enough now and the mole or moles should make sure they inform properly ... (although it's shameful that it happens in the first place)."

Ramos then denied the discussion with Mourinho and said he and his coach were rowing in the same direction.

"All through my career, I have never disrespected any of my coaches. With that I deny all of the things said about me and which I never said," he wrote.

And he added: "I will conclude with this: The boss and I are fighting for the same interests and together with my team, we will fight until the death. Hala Madrid!"

While realizing that most  people believe that the Barca-Real Mudrid duel is done, Madrid still have a chance tomorrow to come back.   A 2-1 decision for them would leave things all equal and headed to PKs.
A 2-0 win sees them through, but any tie sends Barca on.  A 3-2 victory will see them through, but a 1-0 win will not.
Don't you just love the away goals rule?

Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta
Messi, Cesc, Sanchez

  REAL MADRID

Casillas
Arbeloa, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo

Barcelona will be without Seydou Keita, who is away on African Cup of Nations duty with Mali. Pep Guardiola's side also have three players who have long-term injuries; Ibrahim Afellay and Andreu Fontas are both out with ligament injuries, while David Villa is sidelined for the foreseeable future with a broken leg.

Pedro returned from injury to feature in the 4-1 victory over Malaga at the weekend, but it is unlikely the Spaniard will oust Cesc Fabregas, Lionel Messi, or Alexis Sanchez from Guardiola's preferred front three.

Jose Mourinho's visitors go into the match with a 2-1 deficit from the first leg but the Real Madrid coach could opt for the same formation, with three midfielders and three attackers, albeit with a more positive gameplan than in the first match.

Pepe was left out of the squad for the victory over Athletic Bilbao because of a suspected calf injury and did not train on Monday so it is unlikely that the Portugal international will be fit. There are suspicions that Mourinho may be removing the defender from the limelight for a short period, after the outcry against his cynical stamp on Messi in Wednesday's first leg.

Lassana Diarra and Esteban Granero did not train on Monday either, but it is likely the former will be fit enough to come into the three-man midfield. Sergio Ramos also missed the session, but this was due to personal reasons and he is expected to play. Sami Khedira is unavailable, though, after being ruled out for a month with an ankle injury.

DID YOU KNOW?

Barcelona goes into the match with a 2-1 advantage over Real Madrid from the first leg. Carles Puyol and Eric Abidal scored to cancel out Cristiano Ronaldo's early strike and seal the win at the Santiago Bernabeu last Wednesday.

•Barcelona maestro Xavi will equal Joan Segarra's record of 31 Clasico appearances for the Catalan side if he plays in this match.
•Lionel Messi equaled Cesar's record for the most league goals scored in the first half of a season for Barca at the weekend. The Argentine netted a hattrick to take his tally so far to 22 goals in La Liga.
•Cristiano Ronaldo is currently one goal ahead of Lionel Messi in the race for Pichichi award in La Liga.
•Iker Casillas made his 600th appearance for Los Blancos in the 4-1 weekend win over Athletic Bilbao.
•This is the 10th time that Barcelona have faced Real Madrid in just over a year.

Goal.com's  take on the JoMo interview.
My take is that he is getting a bit defensive.
Oh, and if it came to a battle between Casillias and JoMo in Madrid, it would be the Portugese who packed his bags.

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has insisted that he has not created divisions within his squad, ahead of the Blancos' Copa Del Rey quarter-final with Barcelona on Wednesday.

Punto Pelota reported on Sunday that the Portuguese trainer would vacate his post in June, and goalkeeper Iker Casillas was the mole who leaked the story which allegedly saw teammate Sergio Ramos participate in a bust-up with the coach in training.

However, Mourinho appeared to rubbish the story, claiming that the board have shown him its backing and the team is devoid of any fractious relationships.

"I do not provoke clans," assured the trainer at his press conference. "I know nothing about the leaks. I feel very supported by the board, we're currently in the midst of a very good spell."

Mourinho then proceeded to speak about his squad preparations for the upcoming Clasico meeting between the two sides, and admitted defender Pepe will start the match if he is given the green light to feature, despite choosing to remain coy on the rest of his selections.

"If Pepe is fit, then he will play. There are question marks over him, Granero and Lass, all whom are having some troubles, but tomorrow we will train and I will decide whether they are able to play," continued Mourinho.

"I have no idea about my starting XI yet. I have many decisions to make over certain players, so many questions are still unanswered. As in the first game, I had doubts until the end, and the same will happen tomorrow.

"I will not answer [any question related to what team I will pick]. I'm the coach and I do not have to explain what approach I choose publicly."

Mourinho also gave his opinion on arch-rivals Barcelona, who take a 2-1 lead into the return leg of the tie, stating that he will not alter his approach regardless of what players turn out for the Blaugrana.

"I think my team has a chance to play the semifinals, so we will try our best," mused Mourinho. "But we know against our opponent we lost 2-1 the first time, so there is also a chance we won't make it.

"Barcelona changing their squad around does not change much for me [in terms of preparation]. They have their game and their principles, even though the players can change."

The former Chelsea boss then finished his press conference by airing his view that people have blown their recent losses to Barcelona out of proportion, and instead preferring to focus on the achievements he has already attained since his arrival from Inter last summer.

"We have five points more than the team that everyone thinks is the best in the world," exclaimed Mourinho. "It is because we are not doing as badly and have as many problems as people think we have.

"When I came here the club had a tradition of being eliminated from the Copa del Rey by teams from the lower divisions.

"When I arrived, we were not seeded in the Champions League and now we have the record for most wins in the group stage. I seem to have so many problems.

"This game does not mark a before and after in my career," concluded Mourinho.

Kickoff at the Santiago Bernabeu is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET, as a place in the last four of the domestic cup competition is at stake.

Real at crossroads in Barca's shadow

January 24, 2012

 By Miguel Delaney

The Real Madrid players were, apparently, "amazed". All week, they had been hoping for a grand response to the latest Barcelona beating. They wanted to go to Camp Nou on Wednesday night and - for pretty much the first time in Jose Mourinho's tenure - actually take the game to the Catalans with all of the attacking resources at their disposal.

GettyImagesJose Mourinho has found dissenting voices on the training pitch (although evidently not Pepe)

That said. it's not really a case of want, it's a case of need, after the 2-1 home defeat in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg.

On Monday morning, however, it became evident that Mourinho doesn't have the same intentions. The disenchantment in the squad was supposedly only equal to the meeting a few days after last May's similar 2-0 first-leg defeat in the Champions League semi-final, when Mourinho reportedly told his players that "the tie was lost".

That was at that point, journalist Diego Torres claims in his latest El Pais column, that some Real players first began to doubt the Portuguese. Over the last few weeks, Torres's insider articles on the club have become essential reading in Spanish football - even if they have often resembled a soap opera script and many Real supporters have roared about an agenda.

The most astounding allegation, of course, came at the weekend when it was reported that Sergio Ramos reacted antagonistically to Mourinho's criticism of his defensive work in an extraordinary exchange. Most intriguingly, though, there were all manner of neuroses and club issues wrapped up in the few sentences of reported dialogue; from who exactly holds power at Real, to the great unmentionable (and irrelevance) of Mourinho's own playing career.

Either way, it was the sort of reversal that the Portuguese simply isn't used to. But, perhaps most tellingly, it's also the sort of situation that Real Madrid simply haven't been used to for the vast majority of their history.

The Bernabeu may have seen an awful lot of backstabbing, media posturing and petty politics over the last few years, but they've been much more visible at Barca over recent decades. Between 1960 and 2003 at Camp Nou, virtually every chance of long-term victory was offset or unintentionally sabotaged by internal squabbling. Even Johan Cruyff's 'Dream Team' of the early-90s died amid dismally familiar arguments between manager and president.

In fact, it's quite symbolic that the pattern was set six decades ago by a situation which was pretty much the exact negative image of today's. In the late 1950s, Real Madrid were undeniably the most admired team on the continent as they racked up European Cups in resounding fashion. Domestically, however, they began to have their position rocked by a nomadic but mercurial Latin manager in Helenio Herrera who was breaking all sorts of scoring records with a brilliant Barcelona.

Shortly after an acrimonious - and near-apocalyptic - European Cup semi-final defeat to Real in 1960, though, the Barcelona board finally had the excuse to get rid of an abrasive personality who had antagonised them one too many times.

GettyImagesZinedine Zidane was one of many Galacticos

Herrera was sacked and the dye was cast. Because of minor issues, Barcelona had dispensed with one of the major figures in their history and that pattern created the scarcely believable scenario in which one of the biggest clubs in the world only won two league titles and no European Cups in 31 years. That seemingly terminal situation, however, did have a tipping point. And all of the years of pain did at least provide a host of lessons as well as a unique opportunity to do something different. And definitive.

It was in 2003, when Real Madrid's Galactico project was perched on a precipice, that a group of dynamic and progressive young Catalan politicians decided that the direction of the club was all wrong. Shortly after taking over, new president Joan Laporta explained: "Our board of directors belongs to a different generation to the old ones. They innovate ... We have the resources to buy the best, but we don't want to buy a player if we have an emerging equivalent in our B side."

Although it has taken time, what has actually emerged is the perfect football pyramid. Not only are a gigantic club producing cutting-edge modern players but, at the top, they've got a manager (in Pep Guardiola) who intrinsically understands how to enhance them.

In contrast to that structure, Real have resembled - and often acted like - a shapeless mess. Typically, the Galacticos brought short-term success but destabilised the club long-term. It is by no means an exaggeration to argue that, unless Real completely alter the entire infrastructure of the club, it's going to be almost impossible to overtake Barcelona while Guardiola is in charge ... with one exception: keeping Mourinho.

And that's why many of the old players and power blocs at Real should be careful as regards how far they take any discord or dissent. No manager in world football - not even his only two equals, Sir Alex Ferguson and Guardiola - is so capable of stepping into a situation and making it successful as Mourinho. As such, in a club effectively built for the short-term, there is no more appropriate fit for Real than the Portuguese.

Of course, the constant argument against him now is that atrocious record against Barcelona. But it's also worth putting that record in its proper context. Sure, a fair few teams have beaten Barcelona with various different approaches over the last three-and-a-half years, but not when the Catalans have been at their best. The nature of Guardiola's meticulous psychological preparation means that Barcelona are the ultimate big-game team and it is remarkable how, when the stakes are highest, the side are at their most stunningly intense.

Few games, of course, see stakes as high as El Clasico and that means that Mourinho has experienced Barca through a prism that most other managers have not. What's more, although there were many caveats to the victory, Mourinho remains the only manager to beat this Barca at their best. Since Guardiola took over, they have won five of the six major trophies they have gone for: three Spanish titles, two Champions Leagues. The only exception? Inter's European Cup masterminded by Jose.

GettyImagesMourinho's record has not been good against Real's bitter rivals.

But, much as he has tried, the Portuguese has struggled to replicate the Italian side's approach against Barca at the Bernabeu. Real simply don't have the same intensely-driven defence. Their strengths lie in other areas: like that attack. As such, it is understandable that the Madrid players want to finally cut loose against Barcelona. But it is also misplaced.

Mourinho undoubtedly realises that to take the game to Barcelona is tantamount to football suicide and he is apparently very anxious to avoid another defeat like the 5-0 for the good of his reputation. Hence the constant - and somewhat justified - conservatism.

The tactical approach, of course, has had a few different colours to it: from aggressive challenges to assertive counter-attacks. For that, too, Mourinho has been criticised; so many different styles of containing Barca, always the same result. But, as complex as those tactics can get, sometimes the truth is much simpler: at their best, Barca are just a better team than Real and El Clasico always seems to bring out the very best in them.

If a manager with Mourinho's record cannot find the solution, then there is likely only one left: Real must do what Barcelona do did in 2003 and completely redirect the club. History will have to be reversed again. Otherwise, Barca will keep making it.

Great game 2-2. Referee as usual tended to favor Barca in 50/50 calls and others.

Diarra should have been sent off (2nd yellow in first half), Contrao should have been sent off (DOGSO/Professional foul), and Ramos was sent off too late, but softly for what he did do.   And Pepe should have been sent off.
The foul count was what, 3-1 in favor of Real Madrid?
The one clear bad offsides call denied Pedro a clear breakaway on goal.
The only thing that Mourinho and his Minions have to whine about is that they cannot score when given the opportunity.

All that being said, it was a really good game.   Presages a barnburner of a next meeting.

Mourinho is whining about how it is impossible to win at Camp Nou, "everyone knows that".
Alves is whining about the difference in sportsmanship, how RM would not kick the ball out after Pepe hurt Cesc.

Real Madristas are already whining how the referees were against them.
Hey, Franco's pets, if you do not want to hear a whistle, do not commit the foul!!!!

Meanwhile, Iniesta and Cesc both had to leave the game, Iniesta with what looked like an injury and Cesc with what looked like a knock.

To be fair, it did not look like the foul that took out Iniesta was either hard or dirty.

But since the next Classico is at Barcelona, and it is for La Liga, and RM has points to spare, I expect JoMo to send out a squad of assassins to beat the crap out of Barca.  He has to expect to lose, but if he can cripple a few of the Barca key players, even if he has a couple suspended for the rest of the season, it will gaurantee him and his team the La Liga title.

The injuries to Iniesta and Sanchez for Barcelona are worse than initially thought, according to the Barcelona paper "SPORT".

Real Madrid finished with 8 yellows and a red.   For Barca, Messi recieved a yellow for chopping down Pepe.

the first 45 minutes of the game were the first time under JoMo that Real attempted to compete with Barca straight up instead of with thuggery. They did it very well. The pressured Barca high up the field and didn't give them time to settle into tikka-takka. They created scoring chances and were extremely unlucky to be down 2-0 at halftime. Why they resorted to thug ball in the 2nd half, I do not know. If anything this should convince Real that after they kick JoMo to the street that they can compete with Barca without resorting to the hack and slash techniques.

JoMO insists on trying to turn Real into Chelsea or Milan when they play the highest quality opponent on the planet. They don't need to. They can play Barca head to head, they just have a manager that won't let them.
