Don't know, but duffer was sighted barrelling down southbound I-5  past Centralia, riding shotgun on a hay truck filled with red foam clown noses.

OK!  I will bite!  What does this mean?

From what I hear it's Timbers "co-opting" Eastside, Westside and VUSA as affiliates. Their players will then have the inside track to Timbers academy slots. We'll see how it shakes out. Personally I'd like to see the Timbers keep some independence from the clubs so all the clubs have the same incentive to push their best players to the academy and all those players have an equal shot to make it.

I agree with the idea of everyone having an equal shot. But if your the Timbers do you really want to spend the time looking at all the clubs, or would you rather have a youth system that you can help mold? By creating an alliance with these youth clubs you are able to then go in and help mold the training to your liking, and make sure the players are doing what you want. Wouldn't you prefer that if you were the Timbers?

Isnt that why they run the ODP in Oregon?

Provided that they receive proper technical training when they're young I'd rather have the best players. I wouldn't really care where they came from. My concern is that doing it this way will lock in certain players at an early age, and exclude others who come up from different programs.  I think the focus on systems and style or "doing what you want" them to do stifles creative play and the development of truly standout players. It's one thing to look at Barcelona, or Ajax as models, but they're recruiting specific players from all over the world. That's not what's going to happen with MLS academies. It's going to be much more focused on taking local talent and I think that net should be cast as broadly as possible.

Just because they allign themselves with clubs doesn't mean they are excluding all the other talent. Players can still come in and try to earn a spot, and if they are good enough they will earn an ODP spot. Your right that there net isn't nearly as big as a european clubs, but that is also why you see them taking clubs on the eastside, westside, and vancouver. It appears they are trying to give a club in each location that they can have an influence over.

And they still run it... But lets be honset how often does ODP train year round? they still have their club teams if they have ODP also. Wouldn't you rather have a greater influence on training if you were the Timbers?

I agree that there's not going to be any overt effort to exclude talented players. Except those whose talent is blindingly obvious, however, that is what will happen. -- the tie or close call will go to the known quantity. By affiliating with three clubs, Timbers will be increasing the importance of being a known quantity within those clubs. I'm not sure that's a good thing. I've seen it happen way too frequently with ODP where there are new faces that never really get a look because it's easier for the coaches to go with the tried and true based on U-12 team selections. Or the team selection changes radically by club based on the affiliation of the coach. We'll see how it shakes out.

I hear ya. I think its all good personally. They want ODP to identify the players state wide. Aligned clubs are about controlling training & coaching from mod to U13. U14 & above will be at the Timbers Academy anyway. Anyone on the fringe U14 & above can play at one of the clubs & get the system benefits.

What it comes down to is they are a business. If alligning themselves with a few clubs is good for their business, then I am perfectly fine with that.

That's one place where we differ. I'm a consumer of soccer services. If the Timbers business model provides less choice and/or quality for then I'm against it. Doesn't mean I'm against the business, just that I think more competition for the "prize" of playing at the highest level will make the product better all around. It will make the clubs better, and it will make the academy better. But, like I said before, we'll see how it shakes out. It's mostly academic for me anyway. I've only got one player left and not for too much longer. He'll be fine.

You are right as a consumer it could uspet you. But its perfectly in their rights to make decision based on whats best for them. If they uspset enough consumers and it ends up affecting their bottom line, then they will change their model. But I really don't see taht happening at this time. And to be honest they may be "affliated" with those clubs but trust me they aren't as involved in them as some people may think. Most of that affiliation is in name only.

Also as a desclaimer I really haven't been following whats going on with the timbers academy stuff and odp stuff. The timbers really only care about the boys side, I currently coach on the girls side so its been off my radar for now.

So, was it ever decided what the something big is or was?  Well, beside Brat Jr trying to get the delivery of Voodoo Donuts away from me.

A little premature ... they haven't even made the "big announcement" let alone defined the details. Everything to this point is rumor.
But because it's Gavin and his reputation and involvemet in youth soccer it's probably more fluff than circumstance. :P
