Is your DD the next Mia?
« on: October 13, 2005, 08:03:50 PM »

Dragon talk to a lot of CP's over the last few years.  Lot's of parents have rose colored glasses and nothing wrong with that, But I find CP's envolved with girls soccer have the darkest shade of rose colored glasses of all ;)

So what extreme do you go to?  You all have bought the expensive shoes, you all have sent your DD to camps, you all have soccer things somewhere on your vehicle

Where do you draw the line?  Dragon just curious how CP's think, Thought he start thread with a more serious tone

First... NO my DD is not going to be the next Mia Hamm.  Heck, I don't even plan on getting a college scholarship, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't try to do everything I can to help my DD excel in her biggest passion.  :)

We have done the Nike Air legnds.    We have sent her on a plane to Santa Clara University for soccer camp.   We payed for her to play up For Eastside U-11 last year.

The line?...  School comes first.  See my first statement, education is what will make her successful, not soccer.  If studies suffer, soccer gets cut back... end of story!

That being said, the reasons we do support her as much as we do include:  The fact girls in sports are less likely to get into drugs or pregnant.  Team sport encourages cooperation, teamwork, a sense of duty, and disipline.  It is a hobby for mom and dad.  And mostly,  she LOVES soccer!!!   :D

I'm with Gumby on this ;)
My DD loves soccer but school comes first.  We have done some camps and trainers (no plane trips though) and would love it if she got college paid for by soccer, but the reality is not many make it and the world is full of mini-Mia's.
Hopefully mine is one of them ;)

When youngest Dd played rec, she was fast, had a foot and made lots of goals. She could have been the next Mia. That was then. Today, in playing Club soccer and seeing all the other girls out there that ARE good, she better try harder LOL.
As with the other CP's, school comes first. You can go so much farther in life with an education then you can with a killer left or right foot.

I'm not exactly sure, but I think five played U-11 select last year and at least one played U-11 rec.  My DD was the only one from Eastside though.

 My little DD loves this game or so she says. My house also bears the reminder with ball marks left by her brother and her on any picture free wall not made grass. No we do not let them play insde so my wife and I asked and found out "I don't know" left them there. We do not push soccer and both kids rock climb and ski. My son runs xcountry for his school and DD runs track in the spring with her friends from fouth grade. A friend of mine helped me teach both of the kids to play. He is a soccer trainer and a good one. Both were good enough to make A teams and the DD made it playing up. This is a game, we have taught them school is first, then they get to play, both kids are getting very good grades, both know that to get to the next level may mean to walk on to a team if they are still in to it when they get to college. I know kids that are going to two or three trainers as well as practice during the week, they went to three or four camps in the summer. Are they getting any better, maybe. Why are they doing it because daddy will not have his baby on a B team, she will be the best at everything she does because thats the way he is?????????  Sorry rambling

I found out with an older sibling that U-11 is to early to judge the talent a child has, some of the top players on U-11 teams are lucky if they're top 10 by U-14 and some of the players that are towards the bottom end up top five players. Our job as CP's are to support our children, and leave the coaching to the coaches. If our children want to have a chance they have to truely love the game and obsorb every instruction by their coaches and want to push themselves to the next level. I hope my DD"s and my DS continue to play, grow and learn how to be a great soccer player on their own :!:  with my loving support. This way I can say they could not have done it without me.     After reading what tiekesccr wrote makes you think wether we are in this for the kids or for ourselves :?:  :?

Many CP's trying to relive childhood thru dd's and ds's.

As for me, I had my share of sports and winning.  Win or lose I encourage not just my children but others on the team to "give it your all" and always praise them on jobs well done.

You can play the best game of your life and still lose...that should be worth at least a "GREAT JOB" from CP's :)

TB,
What made you decide to stay at u-11 rather than play u-12?
Did Gumby have anything to do with your decision making process?
Did Pokey have anything to do with your decision making process?
Did France have something to do with it as well?
We do so  love those French coaches, don't we?
