Question for CP's
« on: July 12, 2006, 06:07:22 PM »

How do teams (coaches and parents) feel bout players that cannot play on Saturday's or Sunday's due to their religion and what are your feelings about it?

This question came up with my friends U14 DD, and just wondered if any of da younger age groups see this too ;)

Dragon himself no mind, just mean more playing time fo DD ;)

It is hard fo some though, cause at older ages games are almost always on Sunday :?

Question for CP's
« Reply #1 on: July 12, 2006, 06:14:08 PM »

Have seen more than one very talented player give up the game because they couldn't attend Sunday games.  It is their & their families choice,  but some churches/religions do offer alternative days for attending.  My family finds alternatives to allow my dd's to play any day of the week.

I agree that in todays world there are other days in which to attend church activities.
This is a big issue in Utah  :?

Remember the story of Eric Liddel
« Reply #4 on: July 13, 2006, 07:29:50 AM »

This is a great question! This is a very personal decision between a player and their family. But whenever this subject comes up, I'm reminded of the story of Eric Liddel, the great Scottish sprinter whose life the film 'Chariots of Fire' is based on. Liddel, an Olympic athlete who became a Presbyterian missionary and I as I recall was later killed for his faith in China, was confronted with this very dilemma. His family wanted him to focus on his ministry studies and put track on the back burner. Liddle's response to his family was: "T'was God who made me fast!' And so he chose to honor his God by being the best track athlete he could be...and he still found time for his ministry work! His example was such that, at the time of his death, the entire nation of Scotland mourned his passing.

Last year, this would have really hit home. This year, its no biggie.

Confirmation at our church is for 2 yrs ( 7-8 grades ) and classes aren't mandatory, but it is strongly reccommended that you attend service and meeting nights. Maybe that why they do it at the earlier ages so it doesn't interfere with soccer Sundays   LOL

In TX I coaches a player who couldn't play on sundays.  She was my 1st string GK and at all games she would miss the 2nd string got playing time.  I am not upset with this.  The player would attend my 2 sessions, plus my husbands 9 GK sessions for the whole week.  No wonder she is 1st string!  At tournaments she would be there for the build up to semi/final games and then 2nd string GK got the time when it mattered most!  The girls LOVED this situation!  Everyone was happy to have both on the team!

If you go to Latin America or South America and ask this question you will not get an answer. You can not compare soccer & God, it is a sin.

In other words, I can not answer your question because it is not a question that can be answered in our house.

I believe that when you are committing to a team you need to weigh all the options with the coach and the team.  As there are sacrifices made by "both" when it comes to this situation.  Knowing what you can expect and is expected of you usually solves the situation.   ;)

Exactly "respect" for the team and coaches... If it all works out then its all good ... Just be sure that "everyone" knows up front the possibility of playing on a Sunday and makes the necessary arrangements ....  Its all good   :D

you have to remember that most tournament finals and games during state cup (both Sat and Sun) for the younger ages are played on Sunday and most all games are played on Sunday for the older age, Can the team deal with a player being committed to his/her faith if this is the family decision?

I think that most if not all coaches respect that the families also have a committment to their faiths.  Whatever it may be.  There is usually always a way to work it out.

I think they should be able to play.  If being a teammate is the most important and they accept not playing in games. Good for them. The more soccer players the better.

Over the years I have seen this happen.  It just reminds me that not everyone lives for soccer.   I respect that.  I might not agree with it but I do respect the family decision.
