U11 CP's - What do you think?
« on: July 17, 2006, 01:22:00 PM »

This a question for the U11 CP's that also have an older child playing soccer, U12 or higher: What do you think of the 9 v 9 format?  Is it helping, hurting, or just frustrating to watch? Let us know what you think.

why would 9v9 be frustrating to watch vs. 11v11.  It would seem to be that more touches on the ball on a smaller field would increase the number of times that your DD or DS gets to play this game with the ball at their feet.

9 vs. 11
« Reply #3 on: July 17, 2006, 01:51:00 PM »

It's been great. I've seen a notable difference in the pace of skills development over the course of the first few months. (More touches, more touches, more touches) Furthermore, for most kids, the transition to select soccer is huge...I think 9v9 and the smaller field size helps to ease the transition. The focus is on teaching the game, and not on how to play the bigger field. The teams that develop ball and possession skills are rewarded right away, and the purely athletic teams have less of an advantage. Thumbs up.

Ditto. If the MFC Lions played 11v11 this year temptation would be ta play boot ball. 9v9 makes them play possession and the small field is just right for the small sided game.

As a coach working with the younger players, I like the fact that when you win the ball in the midfield, you're only 25-35 yards away from a strike at goal. The 9 v 9 player distribution and size of the field creates lots of transition and at times a very wide-open, attacking game. It also creates more scoring chances and play around the goal, which helps reinforce that the object of the game is, in fact, to score goals!

and you develop players who can attack (offense) and defend and transition from once aspect of the game to the next.

As you know TeamAuburn played up to GU11 11-aside last year.  That was a move up from 8-aside.  I know the girls like 11-aside better than 9-aside.

There is much much much more room to work with in an 11-aside game.

I know the complaint is that a lot of teams end up playing kick-n-run with so much room, but not everyone plays that way.

I do think the girls like 9-aside better than 8-aside.  Especially the center mid players.

At first, I was against it. Miki was U-11 last year with full field. Now I'm all for it! As most would say, more touches more touches and more touches..... works for us

In general, it's probably good as most have said herein.  However, at the same time I think it required those girls playing up at U-11 last year to almost take a step backwards this year.  Of course this will only effect that particular age group of girls and won't be a problem from here on.  The other problem is that some tournaments in this state, such as Diadora, are still playing 11 instead of 9.  Why?  I have no idea.  At least the folks at Skagit (Firecracker) had the good sense to change it from 11 to 9 to be consistent with the state.  Diadora did not...of course they were too busy trying to figure out how to post scores to their website....

I agree if the state standard for U11 is 9 v 9, tournaments should also be 9 v 9, however it must present some scheduleing problems for whoever is hosting the tournament to have enough modified fields for 32 or so boys and girls teams to play on.

That looks like $500 (entry fee per team) x 32 (boys and girls U11, gold and silver brackets)=$16,000 + parking ($100 per team)= $19,200 of missed revenue. I understand that some of the smaller tourneys are not going to attract 32 teams however that is what I used as an average. A lot of $ left on the table to not include U11.

at first i didn't like it. my daughter played u11 last year too. but the more i've watched the more i like it. the small sided game rewards possession. the fact that the field is smaller also favors teams that keep their spacing and when there's a goal kick or a keeper punt the ball makes it out to the half line like in a real game.

The reason some tourneys are still 11 aside is that the State mandate on 9 aside games doesn't start until Sept.

I know a player of mine from last year that has had this problem happen to her, of course this is in my opinion.... BUT it is a hard transition that may just need some time to get used to..... I guess we will see after season starts and season ends to find out how far her development has come.....

What you're saying is no doubt true, buuuuuut....I think it's fairly obvious the rosters for the U-11 teams are assembled in the spring based on the 9 vs 9 format.  Therefore, I have to question the logic behind any tournament in this state using a 11 vs 11 format for the U-11s.  I also heard the fall season will be 9 vs 9 for U-11s, but the state cup will then go to 11 vs 11.  LMAO...    So, this means that a team will play the whole year 9 vs 9 and then when all the chips are on the line, you force the team to go to a different format?  Sometimes I can't make heads or tails out of the logic behind some of this soccer stuff.
