A question for CP’s…..

If there were a tie in tournament play…lets say... 2-2, and a Parent overheard the Ref calling in the score incorrectly as 3-2 in your favor. Would you expect your DD’s coach to correct the Ref? Or would you want your DD’s coach to go for the win at any cost even though the coach, players, and parents knew that the game was a tie? Just curious.

I would want my coach to correct it. What do the players learn?  An honest answer will gain you more respect from players, parents and other coaches.

Wrong Score
« Reply #6 on: July 24, 2006, 10:57:16 AM »

I think everyone here will SAY "correct it."  But when faced with the situation in real life, will they do the same?  That is the hard part.  Chances are, however, that the other team will complain, the TD will look into it, they will question the ref, and it will all come out.  CP's and coach who knew the real score and kept quiet will look like low-lifes.  It's better to stay honorable and lose.

who wants to win on a mistake ? Not fair to either team to let it go. It would have to be corrected immediately.

you're discounting the fact that most of us are honest. The few bad apples give everyone a bad name, but most people are honest and will report an error, even if it hurts to do so. If being honest were easy everyone would do it.

I think everyone would and should correct it.  As a coach what message does it send to your players?

The reality is it should never have been that way in the first place but mistakes do happen.

Traffic is still worse in CA. I go to visit family and I forget how crowded it is down there. Last visit I was in SF and had another driver give me a very rude gesture (for no reason) in the first few minutes after I left the airport. That doesn't happen to me up here. People, for the most part are still courteous on our roads.

Winning
« Reply #18 on: July 24, 2006, 04:20:43 PM »

People on this board, and in life, pay lip service to the idea that development of soccer skills is more important than winning.  But when it comes right down to it, most parents want to win.  Some parents want to win very badly.  Badly enough that they will take their child off of a team that lost to put them on a team that won.  It has happened so many times, as I am sure you are all aware.  When you have that "win-at-all-costs" mentality, you warp the experience for the child player and you end up doing things like attempting to take credit for a win when in fact the game was a 2-2 tie.  Really, it is a bunch of 11 year olds playing a game.

A team of physically mature 11 year olds who pack the box and have one fast forward who can beat the other team off the dribble and score, is going to win a lot of games.  However, most of the kids are not going to develop too well as players.  Especially when they are not allowed to take risks, because THAT MIGHT LEAD TO A LOSS!!  Good heavens.

There are teams and parents out there that will do anything to win.....remember the little league tampering of the birth certificate?

Everyone wants to win but I think most would feel guilty if given a win by an error like this.  Most would want to correct it and call it like it should be.

There are those that would take it and run with it hoping it was never discovered.  It's the 'few bad apples' that cause some of these issues.....(no offense Apple  )

The WA team did not attempt to take this win.  My DD is not on this team, but I did hear the story and I know this coach.  He would never want the win, unless it was deserved.  The ref did give the wrong score, but in the end it was taken care of.  The CA parents were quite upset and were quite rude to one of the ast. coaches,  some of the parents and some of the kids even.  Uncalled for.  Leave the kids out of it. They had no control of the score reported.  (Parents for that matter do not have any control over the score reported by the ref's.)    One CA parent did apologize for the behavior of other parents on her DD team.  Cracks me up how intense we CP's get.

It depends how the ref feels about the team he is helping with the error.  Maybe that team hasn't won a game all season and just needs a little help.

Maybe the other coach needs to be taken down a peg or two.  Who cares what the score is anyway.  Doesn't the next game start 0-0.

Sure, correcting it is the right thing to do, but so what.

every parent wants to win, it comes down to; 'at what cost'? Not all of us pay lip service to that ideal, many of us parents not only say it, we live it.

And there will always be those who jerk kids off teams that aren't doing as well as that parent thinks their superstar kid's team should be doing. We've had it happen already this year.

But those parents are the exception rather than the rule. Most of us have the best intentions for our kids. We know 1 in a million will have a soccer career of any kind. But the life lessons they learn will stay with them forever. And the life lessons are invaluable, win or lose.
