Reasons to not post on soccer boards?
« on: July 30, 2006, 08:15:11 PM »

I've seen references here and elsewhere about CP's and players strongly discouraged, or even "forbidden", to post opinions on forums, by coaches and clubs.
I've also seen references to how the posting tapers off after U11, U12.
Is there a reason that is related to both of the above?
Are there actual clubs that make it a policy to "forbid"? (And if so, who are they?)
Over 2 kids, 2 clubs, I haven't heard it, but maybe haven't read the signs right.
Do parents wise up as their DD's and DS's get older ?? (And get more canny & private)  - I'm sure not hearing that they're less fanatic about wanting the inside scoop, rumors, etc.;
Maybe they just figure out that it could come back to bite them, and so they stop posting even seemingly harmless things like detailed game recaps?
What's the REAL scoop on this?   8) (And I'm talking about the fun stuff, not the outright slander and put-downs).

Dragon think it just a bunch of Chicken Kaka!  CP's should post if they want to.........

"come back to bite them"?  How?

There are plenty of clubs out there and trust D, there are CP's that do a lot worse blabbing on da sidelines then we ever do here

Excellent post Drill Sgt.

I think that as the DD's and DS's get older the realization of being the next Mia or whatever settles in.
At U11 pretty much ALL CP's go to games and sometimes bring along CGP's (Crazy Grand Parents).  At U16 it seems like a much smaller crowd on the sidelines.
Maybe the expectations are lowered to reality and it's not as cute watching little "Suzy" or "Johnny" playing.....it's now a game.
The same goes with posting.....It's funner with the younger ages and kinda blows off as you get older.

Not allowing the team to post is a bunch of 'dodo'.
I have seen why a coach would want this....just go to gotsoccer and read there.
When one CP puffs thier chest and makes a big stink on a posting site like this, they stick their neck out and are open to 'pot-shots' from everybody.  Sometimes it's best to not say how great your team is cuz when you lose (and you will) many will be there to pound it in and make fun of your team and club.

Post away, just don't set yourself up for attack  ;)

I'm not sure how, either,  that's why was asking.
\Mainly wondering, is there anything behind all those warnings, or - are they even real?
Is that really true that some clubs or coaches tell CP's not to share info about games, teams, on message boards, and what are they afraid of? Major tactical secrets getting out?
Player movement and jumping ship?

OH and just read Cheese's answer - that's getting at what I was wondering.
I think after people see the things you mentioned, or, the umpteen million "Tryouts gone Bad" experiences, some parents get an idea they better hold things close to the chest, maybe they're not even sure why!

There are so many sources of information in select soccer, and not all parents or clubs share inormation equally; makes you wonder sometimes... (if there was an emoticon for Paranoid, I'd put it here)
I threw the question out in case someone had a real life story about why you hear that "warning' sometimes, or to find out if any clubs really do officially discourage it.
This is a good site to ask and share ... maybe sometimes hear the truth!

One of my kids were on a team where the coach said to stay away from those sites.

It was for good reason cuz this site was not up and running then.  It did make me look tho and what I read made me think I should stay away from the banter.

Posts can get pretty nasty and many bad things said about players and coaches......which is only an opinion.
One team says they have an awesome player.....their opponent says the kid is a dirty player and 'takes out' other players so they can score.
It's funny how you look at a player just depends on what sideline you are standing on.

I have been spoken to about the site before in the past. I coach for the largest or one of the largest clubs in the state.

Other coaches have jobs that are seperate from coaching. I always try to keep this seperate from my coaching job. Clubs see sites and forums as a positive when they want to, and a negative when they want to. They can't have the good without the bad.

They also know that sites like this do have influence and a voice. If you like having a voice...then post. If you like to be silent....then be silent.

They cannot control your voice ....never forget that.

Aside from personal comments about players & coaches, there are other fun topics CP's love to share on sidelines, such as:
1. What tournaments there coach has lined up (people are always asking, but not so many answers!) Do coaches not like to share that info so much?
2. Practice/training techniques and friendly game "strategies"
3. What they've overheard their DOC or coach say about : anything! (but not player specific)
4. How much they get extra training, and what they pay for it (I know, it was a posted topic recently, but the juicy specifics sparse)
5. How little their DD actually practices juggling? (  that one's a joke!

That is mostly what goes on with this site....it's fun and informative.
Very little negative and nasty comments.

That's what makes this site great.

If you have any of those topics (1 thru 5) then post away...would make for great conversation.  :P

I think its funny that so many CP's  pay HUGE BUCKS to clubs that tell THEM what they can do.  Where they can post, who they can guest play with... etc.......
I dont think I would pay money to a club that thinks they OWN my dd.
;)   Thats going a bit too far.

This site has been great to share information and meet other players. My DD has some pretty great friends from WPS. So do I.

It also helps at tryout time and setting up friendlies... etc...
Great stuff here!

I don't know who's local or not, just a little frustration with some high priced, low rent accomodations we were required to endure. Nothing personal, my apologies, not directed at you at all. Ants crawling over you at night tends to get a little unsettling, disgruntled hotel maintenance men coming in your room at 4 AM with 2 cans of raid even more so. I'll get over it.

the tournament did require stay at specific hotels. Originally the P****** was the only hotel listed when our club blocked out enough rooms for all our teams.

And it was not the Marriott that was available. Many of our parents checked out Sat to stay somewhere that was not falling apart. Granted, some of the rooms our parents had had been redecorated in the past 50 years, but many smelled, had broken fixtures, were small and cramped, were filthy and had bug infestations. A few bugs I can live with, not an infestation. Especially not at $275 for 2 nights.

Soup... That is plain terrible.     Did you atleast get a free night out of it??? ;)

Our "bitch" with the Crossfire tournament was the requirement to register the night before... registration was beginning at Peak traffic time until 9PM... We had a 10AM game the next morning.
Our choices were to go early Thursday and sit in traffic OR... go later and get home late.
We had to get up by 6:30 AM the next day to be on the road by 8AM for a Friday morning game...Not hard on us but was hard on DD.
Not sure why we couldnt just register one hour prior to our first game.

I know...........big WAH!!!  But we wont participate in it for that reason next year.

well your reasons were plenty, ours were plenty for us. And it wasn't just the hotel or the fact we had to stay there. There are many reasons, our club has decided to go someplace else also.

Wow!  This thread has really gone wildly off track.  Back to the original subject, I think clubs feel that to many rumors get flying on these boards and probably is very true.  Would the same rumors get passed along without a forum like WPS?  Sure, but I think the speed at which they move would be reduced giving the clubs time to mitigate the rash as it began to spread among the overall team and soccer community.

I like WPS because rumors do not seem to be the focal point of most of the posters.  Rather just the tranfer of soccer knowledge among a soccer community that generally wishes the best for all the kids playing soccer.

My DDs club does not have any issues with us participating in the WPS soccer community.
