What do you do when.......
« on: August 08, 2006, 11:25:10 AM »

What do you do when there is a lack of commitment from a few parents on your team that  that directly effects the whole team.  We had a parent at the last minute pullout of a tournament that is causing the coach to cancel the tournament for the rest of the team.  The coach does not want to bring in guest players to let the rest of team go and play due to the conflict of guest players playing over weaker players.  Thoughts??

ha, this is a common problem. Vacations, injuries, whacko parents, etc.

You can; go anyway and play with who you have that wants to play, as we've done more than a couple times this year. We've played with 10, we've played with 11, and 12. It's a bit tougher, but you'll be surprised at how many kids want the extra play time. And you may be very surprised that some of the kids you may have thought of us average step up their game.

You remember that family commitments come before soccer commitments.  Don't think its right for coach to cancel the tournament just because of a few players.  Too bad coach doesn't like having guest players.   :?   Like Nosoup said, play anyway...the team may play even harder when they have no subs or are short players...may even win!!

Soccerdad, I would be quite disappointed if a coach cancelled a tourney because of a few.  First I would be disappointed that the coach didn't provide enough pre-information on schedules, committments and plans at the start of the year.  Families would then be able to schedule out there summer around soccer.  Second, family committments that have been planned for quite some time do happen and on those occassions the ability to pick up guest players would help fill out the team.  Or if you have a larger roster, the ability to play with who you have helps build character in the team and sets them up for unforeseen happenstances (is this a word) that occur throughout the year.  It helps build character in regards to absences, injuries and or committments.  Your coach also has to remember that some of these families planned on being at this tourney and maybe rearranged their schedules to fully commit to the team.  What message is he sending to them.  Good luck with whatever is decided, but I would say,  "lets go play!!!"

100%, let the kids play, isn't that why we do this ? If it's all about wins/losses our motivation is skewed.

Does the coach not have the ability to use guest players as a "resting player"... while the Team Players are resting between subs, the guets players are playing (5-10 min).

Personally... GO TO THE TOURNAMENT!!  With out without guest players.   The rest of the team is being penalized!
I would also speak to the family about the situation that has risen due to their last minue pull out.

Maybe the coach is uncomfortable coaching with this player set-up (missing top players).  But that shouldn't keep him from the responsibility of the other players.   He should be the one contacting these parents about missing the tourney, not other parents.  I have had it on a number of occassions where girls stayed with families of the team for a tourney game and then we got the girl to airport or where they had to be after the games to continue on with the family.  One girl who had a family wedding, played in the tourney game in Bellingham on Saturday, we met parent in Everett who took her to the wedding that night, got her back to the field in time for 10:00am game the next day.  Where there is a will, generally you can make a way..

There has to be more to the story than that.  Tournaments are paid several weeks in advance.  Teams have subs.  Is the coach making a statement.

Need more information before I jump down a coaches throat.  Coaches want to play their teams in tournaments, so when they pull out there is usually more to the story than what parents hear.

Drop out of a tournament due to missing a player or two? Extremely disappointing and a complete misalignment of priorities. Sometimes ya gotta learn not to live your life through the children. Let the kids play the game they love !  Heck, they may even surprise ya ! Leadership is a rare trait, egos aren't.  Maybe there is more to the story than we really know. Hopefully....

Soccerdad you are the only 1 that can help us out here.  Any news on why the coach decided to not play?
