2007: U-11 & U-12 8v8; max. Roster 13
« on: October 19, 2006, 05:12:59 PM »

I'm hearing for the 2007 season that nationally all U-11 and U-12 will be 8 a-side (8v8) and a maximum roster size of 13. :?:

WA has already agreed (WSYSA). Evidently there were some state associations that were holding out but now all 50 are on board. :?:

Suposedly this brings the USA into line with what is done internationally?(FIFA) :?:

Can anyone confirm? ... what have you heard? I've done some searching and I can't seem to find anything in writing. :?
Opinions? ... is this a good thing?

If this is the case, what does this do for the U-11 teams that played up a year (11v11) this season and are planning on playing on age next season(U-12) ... screwed? They now have to play mod or play up again (U-13) if they want to stay 11v11. I would imagine that 8v8 vs. 11v11 is even a bigger step than 9v9 vs. 11v11 ... hmmmmmmmm? :?

How about we just make it 1 v 1 and that way there will be more touches.

The player would learn offense, defense and Keeper.....all at the same time.

What better way for youth soccer to flourish.

Because if they keep moving it up, by the time my youngest kid gets old enough to play 11v11, she'll be out of sports or a grandma!
I may as well put her back in rec and save myself a few hundred dollars and loosen up my schedule a bit.

Well, forgetting the impact on existing teams that played up...where are we going to find 25% more coaches and 25% more fields to allow the same number of players to continue to play? Many clubs/ associations are still trying to figure out how to handle 9v9 fields for U11 as the weather shuts down their grass. Most school turf fields aren't too crazy about having their fields adjusted...

It may not be bad in the long run - but very few enterprises can swallow a 25% swing in requirements, including adjusting facilities and resources with no notice. At least with this year's U11 groups it's been known for some time and groups had a chance to prepare.

Course, I think this is just a rumor. There's nothing published about it on USYSA or WSYSA, and the only thing on Mod on USYSA still shows wide variance in how modified games are being implemented across the US.

I didn't say it was good or bad, but I know alot of people smarter than I have discussed this for a long time, Including our last coach interviewee Bobby Howe and they have decided that this system will help our youth become more proficient at the game of soccer and help us compete at a world level better than what we are currently doing.  Now should we go along with this or fight it and create another new league to offset what they believe within USSF?

If it's a field issue then just mirror the HS schedules.

Boys play in Fall, Girls play in Spring.

Cool idea! We can call it the Primary International Drastically Developmental League Eleven-a-side (PIDDLE)

I can't and wouldn't argue which approach is better for development, I'm more of a dad/ administrator than a coach...but if we're going to deploy significant changes, we need to plan for them, especially when we're throwing them at a largely volunteer organization.

I like that one - but I'm not sure Hell will freeze over and Pigs will fly in time for it to help...since that seems to be what it will take for it to happen (based on everything else I've seen written about that one).

This is the worse thing and a travesty that the state WSYSA and the schools WIAA can't come together and fix this arrangement.  The girls are taking a beating :(

I did a little research, and I can tell you for certain that there is ABSOLUTELY NO TRUTH to this rumor. What has been rolled out in Washington is the only thing planned, and no interest in changing it so soon after implementation. So, 9v9 for U11, still 11v11 for U12s.

...and the Challenge Cup and Commish Cup schedules have been shortened! (Finals tentatively in February!) I don't get it. The truncated schedule is better, but if you're going to go to the trouble of shortening the schedules, why not push pool play a month and get a shot at better weather?
