I didn't say it was good or bad, but I know alot of people smarter than I have discussed this for a long time, Including our last coach interviewee Bobby Howe and they have decided that this system will help our youth become more proficient at the game of soccer and help us compete at a world level better than what we are currently doing. Now should we go along with this or fight it and create another new league to offset what they believe within USSF?
It depends on what you want. If we want US soccer players that can compete internationally then this sytem will help. If we just want to keep cranking out teams that can't dribble and can't shoot we can continue as we have been.
We will not be able to play at the international level unless we change our overall concept of the game. 3 or 4 quick passes up the field before a defender steals it, then up and over to a speedy forward for a quick shot will never, never produce the quality players we'll need to compete with the world's best.
Why hasn't soccer caught on in the US like it has world wide ? Because we don't have the Beckhams, Ronaldos, Ronaldinhos, Zidanes that can draw the large crowds into stadiums. And we don't have those major stars because we can't compete with how the rest of the world learns the game. Until we get away from putting the emphasis on having kids win games, and having them learn to play we will be forever in this cycle. Just because Treetops FC wins the US National youth title means nothing, except to the US. Soccer is an international sport, our colleges have kids from every country playing now, is it working the other way ?
8V8 will make kids learn to dribble, there will be less players to pass to, they'll have to rely on their own skill to get past a defender. Maybe there won't be a forward open to take the shot forcing them to dribble up and shape a shot to the far post, or bend the ball past the keeper.
We have to start looking long term to improve US soccer. As my playing age kids are 13, 15 and 20 they will be way past their prime by the time these changes are implemented. But the old ways haven't worked.
