That is why we lost"!!!!

How many of you feel this way?  Or know of someone that does?

Statecups during the winter is tough, just wondering in my crib how many people think the outcome to a game could have been different if the weather was nicer.

i dont think the weather affected the outcome of my game.  we won 7-0 with an inch of compressed snow at Auburn MV HS, i guess the outcome would be different in dry weather.  maybe 12-0

I actually think it does make a difference at the U-11 age. With smaller fields it seems to equalize the game a little bit. It did effect our game, we won 5-1. I  think we linked less passes than normal and our touch and trapping was off a bit. Players also seemed to lose footing easier and long balls often skipped thru becuase footing was poor.

The lone goal was a pk, my player running over there player when he slowed down and our player couldn't. Flattened like a pancake...    He totally did not mean too

I would guess if you kick and run, it would help your team.

I hope you didn't think I was. I definitely didn't want to sound that way. I do think it changes how teams play. Passing is harder, movement off the ball is harder, pretty much everything is harder.

From what I saw it looked like a soccer ball on an ice rink.  Kids slipin and sliding all over the place.  Passes never connecting, speed and skill get somewhat neutralized.

No Squash I didn't think you were bragging.  Maybe the 7-0 person was tho?  Play is difficult in these conditions and I take my hat off to the girls for doing it.  Some teams definitely have a harder time adjusting to different surfaces.  But, it makes them well rounded players and parents good complainers:)
I am looking forward to the spring and warm summer tourneys, lpts in Spokane!

As long as we've been in this select/premier soccer universe, the snow has been the great equalizer. It ALWAYS seems to favor the underdog. Our older DD has been on both sides of this....being in a game that never should have been close, and being frustratingly unable to score on an inferior team. Snow absolutely changes the game.

(We did get a big kick out of our 20 visiting team parents working for an hour to clear the field while the (underdog) host team parents stood there and watched. A coach from another team who came by to watch the game acknowledged that he'd have told his parents to do nothing if he were the host as well..)

This year was different, though. It's one thing to brush some snow off the field. It's another thing to have to scrape the ice off turf. We had one kid take all the throw-ins, she played the whole game without gloves, and she had tons of little cuts on her hands from every time she got dumped.

The other problem is uniform application of the rules. It's unfortunate not to have everybody play under the same conditions on a given day, but I don't see any way to fix it. You can't fault the cities and school districts for closing the fields, and you can't fault refs for exercising their discretion to call games where kids were gonna get hurt.

So whatddya say? Bad luck.

That's pretty classless!

IMHO anything over a 5-0 shutout is just to humiliate the other team, and then to state that it would be an even bigger massacre without the snow.....geez!

You said that "we won 7-0"

Hopefully you are the GU-13 player that wandered into this CP forum by accident, and not really a CP

Bad weather is the great equalizer.  It takes the touch out of the game.  At U11 like squash said, trapping is horrible, passing the ball over mounds of snow just misguides or stops the ball.  Players with great turning ability are completely "left out in the cold".  Goalkeepers hands are near frostbitten, and then the comment about clothes was right on.  Those fast guys you had on your team are usually the really skinny wirey types and to keep them warm you have to suit them up in ski clothes further slowing them down.  The only ones not affected are the players that had less speed, less skill and are more like a bull in a china shop, just blasting their way through and finding some lucky bounces in the ice!

But no, weather didn't affect us.

Just pokin' some fun here Lothar. :D

So, if the weather didn't affect you,  does that make your team  "The only ones not affected are the players that had less speed, less skill and are more like a bull in a china shop, just blasting their way through and finding some lucky bounces in the ice!"

Your words not mine.

U12 Girls Challenge Cup game
« Reply #17 on: January 16, 2007, 09:31:21 PM »

The snow definitely changed the level of play at our game this weekend, but I have to say I was very impressed with how well  both  teams handled the poor weather related conditions.

We played at Starfire (thank goodness some fields were open ;) ) The girls adjusted quickly to the colder temps, the way the ball moved, and they remained focused even when the snow came down the entire second half.  My DD chose not to wear a hat or gloves(I thought she was nuts) and remained in the whole game. I was very proud of her for playing her best in those conditions.

I just hope this Saturdays game has a green pitch. No more snow pleeeezzzz!

Watched a BU11 game Sat. and it was just like you said Squash.  They couldn't get a read on the ball to save their life (or their knee, their side, the other players knee...or whatever else they fell on).  The ball would hit an icy spot and wing on down the field at warp speed or hit some fresh snow and just land and die.  Heard one kid after saying "mom I didn't mean to foul that guy, I just couldn't stop!"  It also snowed the entire game.  Never thought I'd say this, but I'm ready for rain.

Watched a game on Saturday at Plantes Ferry in Spokane Valley.  Emerald City coach complimented the groundskeeper on his field preparation.

Snow was plowed well off the field ... lines painted in bright orange ... Although temperatures were near zero overnight and only got up to 13 degrees at gametime, the ground was still soft and the grass was not frozen.

From the sidelines, it appeared that the field conditions had no bearing on the game at all.  Players had good footing and were even doing moves on the field ... ball ran true.

No matter what you say on this subject you will end up on "the wrong side of the fence"!

I will say that I think field conditions in the snow, since that is not what we "normally" practice in or on. . . does favor some teams style over another teams style of play.   And not that it makes any difference what "style" you play, if a team (especially younger and not as experienced) has to play differently to accomodate the field conditions this will affect their game.

Not that it is fair or unfair, it is just what it is.  The only thing though is I think if half of the games must be cancelled due to field closures then maybe all should be.  Those fields that did play were not any worse/better off than the ones they did not play on.  We all play in the rain and cold. . .!?!

exactly, not fair or unfair, just how it is. For 'our team', we rely, and live and die with our speed. Ice takes away that speed. But we could have been another style of team. So it's just the luck of the draw. Not unfair, just is.

I do think playing on frozen turf is dangerous. Frozen natural fields OK, but when the turf has a layer of ice that's covered with snow it can be dangerous. Win or lose, you never want to see kids being hurt like that.

I would much rather play on frozen turf than natural fields.  At least with the turf you get an even playing surface.   Grass fields (or mud at this time of year) are terrible when it is wet, and worse frozen.

What I noticed this past weekend, with a few exceptions, were the low scores.  Lots of teams couldn't put it in the net!

I'm just trying to cause trouble!  It takes a little imagination and creative interpretation   , but....

Pic #3, Red player pushes opponent to ground (no, don't be telling me the opponent slipped in the snow)
Pic #5, Red player holding opponent (probably thinking about tripping her too)
Pic #6, Red player grabs opponent from the back and ready to toss her over her knee!
Pic #7, Red player about to kick opponent after successful slide tackle!
