What a doofus.  How many chances does one person expect to get?  The coach puts faith in him and backs him on numerous occassions and then he goes and drinks and gets caught with the funny stuff...He is done with the Hawks.

i like him too as a player. His potential is so high it's crazy. It's too bad he may never put the effort in, and may just be your average 2-3 million a year tightend in the NFL.

He is a specimen with his size and speed.

It might be his wakeup call having this arrest or maybe it won't be.  If he does wake up and realize how great he can be some team will get a steal.  The tight end the Seahawks signed yesterday does not compare skill wise...

When your head coach comes to you and says you have one more chance in the NFL--wouldn't that be a wake-up call?   Mr. Stevens keeps hitting the snooze button and this just cost him millions of dollars.  Skilled and physically able doesn't mean contract when you don't have a brain.

To be honest, I know jeremy has issues, but the team, and media have definitely painted this picture as bad as possible to make the loss of him or the fact they were not going to sign him anyways easier on the public.

Yes he bailed them out by his actions, but they never had interest in him.

People can say what they want, but he was a difference maker for the team when they chose to use him. He's much better than most give him credit for.

As far as the ganga and drinking go.....welcome to probably 50% of the NFL and pro sports in general.

I know plenty of people that have had DUI's and that have had some sort of addiction problem. It's why they call it an addiction and why these things are considered health issues.

I find peoples judgement at times to be too critical. I find the media to be the types to pick and choose who to blast, as they sit and drink their afternoon martinis. Calling Mr. Kettle

Squash--I believe the media has a tendency to blast pro athletes and over exaggerate.  I do think the Seahawks are probably using this to also explain why they weren't going to offer a contract to Jeremy Stevens.  He was a good player who had amazing skills,  who for one reason or another weren't utilized to its potential.  Maybe it was his fault, maybe the teams.  Why does he play like all world against Dallas and then disappear against Chicago.  The teams fault and the way he is utilized or did Jeremy have a hangover.  We will never know.

But as a fan, who sometimes gets to pay hundreds of dollars to take my family to a sporting event occassionally to watch these multimillionaires play, I can't be rational when we talk 50% of the players drink too much or smoke weed.  Especially when our kids look up to these athletes (not necessarily as role models--thats our job), but as a professional athlete and doing things right (in the sports field and social environments).  I can't excuse Jeremy Stevens in this incident which looks to me like an addiction.  He is old enough and has probably been provided plenty of opportunities by the Seahawks to get counseling and help to learn from his pass transgressions.   He should have made wiser choices and he is paid enough to be able to make better decisions.  He could have hired a driver for the night and not even blinked.

Now I think he just needs to get his life back in order and as far as I am concerned, do it away from the Seahawks.  I wish it was different.

Yote i wasn't saying 50% drink or smoke too much, just that 50% probably do. I 100% agree with the get a driver. To be honest if your making 2 to 4 million a year.....what's it cost to have a lifetime friend work for you and drive you around. Give me a room at the mansion and 40-50 k a year to blow, and I'll drive you around.

How tough could it be ...hehe

I wish him nothing but the best in his career. You and I may be the only ones that see all that huge upside.

being in the spotlight automatically puts you under the microscope. You've 'arrived', so to speak by exemplary feats or actions. A CEO, a pro football player, a singer, whatever. And because you are less than 1% of the population, and because you've 'chosen' to be in the limelight (in addition to being fabulously paid for your talent) you automatically agree to be scrutinized. It's the nature of the beast.

When you fail miserably, ala Superbowl 2006, and with many, many passes this year bouncing off your hands it becomes clear that all the money, and all the hype are not worthy. We pay athletes HUGE dollars to catch touchdowns in the end zone. We expect a certain percentage of success. We know even Jerry Rice dropped some. But to consistently drop pass after pass shows 1 of 2 things. Either you have a reason to play bad, or you really aren't 'all that'.

He is one of the two columns. Either one is reason enough to catch flak from the fans. The media will only report on what we prove we will consume. The media may be a tough critic, but deservedly so. Pro athletes earn more than some small countries. His ONLY job is to catch the ball.

The problem I have with Stevens (and other pro athletes) is there are kids that look up to him and they see what he is doing and that he only gets a slap on the hand.  Unfortunately, there are kids that start to believe that that is reality and end up doing things believing they will only get slapped on the hand as well.  But the reality is, if the average Joe committed the crimes that Stevens has committed, the sentence would not be deferred to a time that is convenient for them...it would be immediate.

I am hoping and praying for the day when one (or more) of the professional sports says "We've had ENOUGH!!!  You committed a crime--you voided your contract (we are not paying you)--you're finished PERMANENTLY...no exceptions!!  We will not help you, we will not support you...you're on your own.  There are plenty of athletes out there that WILL abide by the rules and won't make us look like friggin' fools in the eyes of our fans.  We don't care who you are because now you don't exist to us!!"

Unfortunately, I don't think my prays will be answered...

especially when they have so much star power. Heck the promoters love it when there's conflict, it draws in the fans. Unfortunately it's ALL about the almighty dollar. And until WE boycott and take away our dollars there will never be a message sent to the media and the promoters. I am a patriot I like to think. When a nationally known country group dissed our President, I was DONE. I threw out all their CD's and vowed to never buy another. Did it make an impact ? No, but had there been enough folks with a similar sentiment it would have. We vote with our wallets.

Not to change the subject, but when she ( who must be nameless cuz I can't think of her name)  of The Chicks did this, MANY radio staions stopped playing thrir music and some have yet to start back up.
If we all stand up for what we believe in, then maybe the Stars and promoters will notice that we don't like it and stop trying to bait us with their tactics and antics.
I am probably the only one that will not go to Starbucks just because they took out my favorite flavor! Does it matter to them? Probably not, but Bigfoot Java appreciates it!

Big money will buy you out of just about anything.  (OJ, Michael Jackson....etc)
The problem is the owners of teams with their current athletes only want one thing.....money.
They will do what they can to keep their players out of trouble so they can play because they are the best around at the time.  Once they become expendable.....poof, they gone.

Once they have all the money in the world they can almost buy their way out of anything.  :x
