Hockey, soccer, baseball, basketball; it's all about the kids isn't it?

What a great video. 1) I can't believe no one has responded with an opinion on this one and 2) every parent, coach, board member, coaching director should watch this....yes, it is long video and you hear the meat of the speech about 1/2 way through.  We can always learn and be reminded of what is important - our children. ;)

Well said!!.

What struck me as I listened was how little "pick-up" or unstructured games my kids play-regardless of the sport.  The most fun I had as a kid was the informal games that we played in backyards and partking lots.  Everything now has to have adult supervision, and I don't beleive that is always a good thing.

Not just great...awesome.  I could relate very many points.  I've heard our coach say many of the same things.

Best game ever?  Shopping cart football.  Played on a parking lot, each wide reciever and DB has a shopping cart.  Only balls landing in and staying in the cart count.  Player is "down" when any any of the four wheels leaves the ground.

Oh, and calling pass interference is for wimps.

Ahhh... those were the days.  LOVED IT!!!

Not too sure I would like to see my kids playing bicycle polo with croquet mallets, or roller hockey with golf clubs and no helmets though.

What were we thinking?

We were thinking it was fun....NIce to know most parents and paranoid older people take the fun out of being a child these days. Glad I grew up in a different era...very thankful

the times sure have changed.
I used to ride my bike weekly from Puyallup to the North End of Tacoma. Will I let my kids do something like that? NO WAY! Too many cars on the road and too many stupid people behind the wheel. :x
If we lived in the area that I grew up in, walking to the store ( 1 mile) or even school ( 2 miles) wouldn't be a problem. The area hasn't grown all that much.

OK I see 429 views and only 9 posts, let's hear from others that watched the video! This opened my eyes and kicked me in the *&##.  The touches on the ball is what counts I was told 3 years ago by the A coach, and I didn't get it.  I've been trying to get it and now again I get it.  This video made for a very educational moment with my kid last night.  He realized that our yard is too small, the park across the street is a hill, but we made a pact - to do more of pickup games/silly play as we can in suburbialand.

Yes that means calling his soccer friends, more driving, but just to get 3,4 or 6 together to do wall ball or anywhere on grass.  The christmas present Pugg goals that haven't been used are now in the trunk, with the ball bag with more soccer balls found in the garage than we knew we had.  We're ready to go. 8)

It's hard to coach the way he talked about. 99% of that has to do with parents and the feeling THEY have to win. He was 100% accurate when he said the best job would be coaching a team of orphans. No parents...haha

Getting touches on the ball is hard to do here also. They can go out into the not so busy road, but that tears up the balls. Schools are not too far, but if its only a one on one type thing, they tire of it easily ( so do I )
Pickup games in our neighborhood? Not very likely as my kids are the oldest around that we know play soccer. Most others are into dance and swimming.
I wonder if a school or park would let those that want it, schedule a pick up game to be played at a certain time on a certain day ...
( ie, Wednesdays at 6)
LOL Starfire could make a bundle letting this happen with all the CP's in the VIP section watching , drinking and eating!

Yes, don't you just love the fact that they sit and guzzle beer!  Also, that's why I said driving is prominent on the agenda again, as there are no same age kids or soccer players in our surburbia neighborhood.  Right now, anything turf has little league on it, and all the grass in the parks are a mess - don't want to risk injuries (tryouts still happening.)  Love the "Orphans" comment, there's a parent on a game video from our season (opposing team) that doesn't shutup the entire game, plus he sounds drunk.  I have to keep the sound down when I watch it. I'm so glad I paid for that.

I feel fortunate as this is the way my younger dd's coach is. He focus' on technical and skills and they play games sometimes that may not be "soccer based" but are very good for soccer skills.  Do they win as much as they might be able to - not always- do the kids care - not so much as the parents.  Next year is going to be the first year where he really starts focusing on the tactical part of the game.  He is excited and the kids are ready for this.  They may not all turn out to be big time players but they will have a passion for the sport and will all have the capability of being good coaches when they get older so they can pass on the love of the game.
