Synergy '96 vs crossfire Barton
« Reply #4 on: April 27, 2007, 09:22:17 PM »

Synergy was out manned from the get go.  Synergy played a defensive first half and their keeper played very well.  Synergy tied the game 1-1 on a 20 yard penalty kick.  Probably the worst thing that could have happened.  After being on the defensive the girls seemed to think they had won the game by tying it at the half.  Wrong.  Crossfire came out and just put so much pressure on the defense that Synergy just couldn't keep up.  The Keeper kept the game from really really getting out of control.

Lack of experience in big games, and lack of focus was very apparent in the Synergy squad.  Hopefully they come out ready to fight tomorrow morning.

I was also surprised at all the development teams playing U11.  Lots of 8 and 9 years out at Starfire.

Saw the game from the PK where Synergy scored, til the end of the game.  Synergy definitely had their chances...  once they learn to follow the ball to the goal, not watch their teammates shoot.. they will start finding the back of the net.  Definitely could see Crossfire's experience on the field..  Games like this will only make this Synergy team stronger...  Great bunch of kids.. and some great attitudes from the parents!! :D

« Reply #9 on: April 28, 2007, 12:30:46 PM »

I said I would try and say good things about development that I saw (win or lose). So here are some things I saw at Starfire:

good job to Eagles Blue at U-11 who kept trying to pass the ball outside (hard to do when you are little!).

good job to Crush Academy, who connected a bunch of passes--no wonder some of these girls grow up to be such great players!

good job to saprissa--a new club/team I also saw at the Pacific Premier Jamboree--for playing everyone all over the place! that's what should happen during this time.

hardest thing about reffing in U-11 games--watching one team cream another 10-0 or 7-1. I get the point where I hate to blow the whistle and signal another goal. I see these little girls just slump their shoulders, and I want to say something like, "hang in there!"

More games to go this afternoon and evening!

synergy '96 vs. NWN Blue Synergy vs. Eastside
« Reply #10 on: April 28, 2007, 01:55:21 PM »

Synergy 4 blue 1.  Synergy girls came out much more focused and won a lot of balls.  controlled tempo and had fun executing what they practice.  The one goal given up was an own goal from a corner kick.  Keeper did an outstanding job once again.

Once again though the girls had some success and lost focus.. Came out against Eastside and gave up some really bad goals.  Down 5 at half time.  Second half came out focused and re-energized and held Eastside scoreless, final 0-5.  Keeper once again made some wonderful saves.

Lots of experience gained from starfire, can't wait until memorial Day weekend tourney.

Okay, more reporting in on good things I saw.

First, the Crossfire Megson boys are FAST!! WOAH!

Don't know who Xtreme is, but their team played really good soccer (5-1 over Dos White)--good attempts at passing--good tackles

Super cute: Eagles and GRFC developmental teams--girls about 3 feet tall (maybe). GRFC and Eagles both trying to pass out wide, very encouraging parents. Tied 1-1, which was just where it should be.

One thing dissapointing: some coaches made NO effort to control high scoring games--very non developmental. Yuck.

Xtreme is a federal way rec team.  Some of the Synergy girls played them last fall in the tracey whitney jamboree and beat them.

Lots of high scores seems very disappointing, but when you have a round robin tournament where each team doesn't play everybody, ties are decided by goal differential.  Look at U11 girls, crossfire and Eastside.  Two very good teams, they don't play each other, and will both go undefeated.  How else do you advance?  If only starfire only allowed 16 teams as their rules state.

Yes, but most tournaments have a limit to the number of goals counted in determining a tie--4-5 is the typical number. Beyond that, the amount of goals scored doesn't count towards a tiebreaker. Starfire may not have such a rule, but they should. I have never been to a tournament that doesn't have a max goal differential.

Okay--just checked on their website--no rule for goal differential, but I still say, "yuck."  I doubt many of the U-11 coaches checked the rules about max goal differential. It's just that some coaches make a sincere effort to limit overscoring and others don't. With so many kids over the years in soccer, I have been on both sides of the fence, and always prefer the coaches who pull the reigns in (ie 5 passes before you shoot; score on a header, etc.)

I was considering the tie breaker where you do have the total goals score as one deciding factor.  It's down there a ways, but when the two teams don't play each other and they both have shutouts, which happens a lot this weekend it makes a difference.

Starfire Rules for a Tie
The team which defeated the other
Total goals against
The team with the fewest losses in group play
The team which posted the most opponent shut-outs (opponents held scoreless)
The team scoring the most goals
Coin Toss or Penalty Kick.

If I'm reading the Starfire rules correctly, running up the score doesn't really help.

The point system employed caps the number of points you can earn per game at 10.
6 points for the win, 1 point for each goal up to a max of 3, 1 point for a shut-out, 3 points for a draw.

The tie breakers, as mentioned, favor:
First: head to head competition
Second: Defense - goals against

As an example: if we look at GU-11 Group D:

EFC Red will win the Group if they win their next game by nothing less than 3-0.
Even though X-fire Barton may have scored more goals and have a better goal differential .... X-Fire and EFC wil have tied with 28 total points each however EFC Red only allowed 1 goal thus they will win on the tie breaker  ..... because of Defense! :D

of course they have to win with a min score of 3-0! ;)

Very true.  The chance of the tie breaker ever getting to the total goals scored is minimal at best, but it's there and I bet you some coaches like having that cushion.  Especially if you're a team playing their games first and don't know what another team is doing.

I guess my biggest point wasn't the running the score or the rules, but more of I'd like to see all teams in a bracket play each other.

Well I know the Synergy cp's and dd's got their moneys worth.  Played two of the best teams I've seen and learned a lot in their first tourney.  A few were bummed for the first tourney that the girls were in such a tough bracket.  But what better way to improve and gain experience than to play the best.  First "select" tourney for the girls and coach.  Now the girls know what they need to do to compete with the best and can start preparing for the next tourney in 4 weeks.
